Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Caught it this morning. Enjoyed the heck out of it. I've read the comics, and only found them mildly entertaining but not particularly great, and I thought the movie was far better. Parts of the book felt like a chore to read through, whereas the pace of the movie moved along briskly and far better. While I didn't like the way it ended too much either, it felt a little more satisfying then it did reading the last book of the comic.

Great action, good comedic timing all throughout, and wonderful casting (sans Michael Cera, who I still dislike and didn't find much difference from every other role he's been in, despite assurances otherwise). I did miss a few omissions from the comic, particularly Envy's limited role, but given the box office results I don't think this would have made it into two movies. I also thought the trailers captured the exact feel of the movie, so I'm not really sure what the difference was there either

I wouldn't call it the best film i've seen this year, but it probably makes the Top 5.

Also, i'm not surprised to find Pixy thumb his nose at this.

Got back from my third full showing, and I'm still amazed at how great this movie is. I caught details I missed the first two times. Definitely my favorite film of the year.

I thought the theatrical trailers were great. But the TV ads (where the bulk of casual audience first hears of it) were pretty damn sucky.

I probably caught .001% of the comic book/video game references, but I just got back from this and thought it was tremendous. There's something to be said for just having a damn good time at the movies, and I thought this was one of the most fun movies of the year.

I went to see it, since "The Expendables" wasn't all I hoped and dreamed for. Final judgment: my apathy towards the comics was unfair to lump on the movie. It had some definite pacing issues, but was a fun, good natured, live-action cartoon. Not Edgar Wright's best film, but still a solid B+. Apologies to those I thumbed my nose at for liking the movie.

After watching this movie, I want all concerts to start off with the drummer screaming "We Are Sex Bo-Bomb!"

Can anyone confirm or deny that the song playing when Scott fought the stunt team was the theme to "The Warriors?"

If it isn't its remarkably similar. Can anyone confirm or deny if Roxie's weapon was based off of Ivy's whip-sword from Soul Calibur?

Yeah, that was a definite Soul Calibur reference.

It's on the soundtrack as "Rumble" and is listed as being penned by Nigel Godrich, but I agree...there's no question what the inspiration is there. The 8-bit bleeping sounds set it apart from the original.

I'd read that Goblin was an influence on Godrich's score, and you can really hear that in "The Vegan". (I think it sounds a little more John Carpenter-y than Goblin, but still...)

Thanks. Rumble is definitely "Warriors" inspired.

Someone actually already synced "Rumble" with the Baseball Furies scene.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it 2 weeks ago and i totally adored it. I'm 29 and a geek so personally it felt like the movie spoke directly to me!

I was wondering if there's a site or thread that has all the references from the movie?

Example: a certain sound was heard in a scene and was from this game. Or this weapon is an homage to that game etc...

I caught a couple obvious ones in the movie but i was curious to know all the other obscure ones.

Thanks!

This site supposedly has all the video game references but I'm sure it's missing a bunch.

wasn't listed at site, but wasn't the NES Metroid theme meshed into the opening title sequence or Universal logo card, with Zelda, or at least some time during the movie? i could've sworn i heard it...

The Universal intro was done 8Bit style, which does resemble the NES Metroid open, but I'm not sure if it was intentional as it's pretty spot on with the real Universal fanfare intro. Of course in a movie like this, there's probably no such thing as coincidence if something sounds or looks like something else.

I think I heard Zelda at the beginning, and during a sequence later in the movie the fairy fountain music is played (right before Ramona knocks on his door I think). At least, I think?
