I thought piracy was actually much more rampant in Asia than over here. I remember reading in a magazine in the 90s that talked about how during the NES/SNES era it was easier to find a pirated game than it was to find an actual legitimate game in Hong Kong.
Which is why it's patently ridiculous to think that releasing something in Asia first would deter piracy. Pirates aren't going to pay for something just because they can see it first. It just means they're going to pirate it first. Americans aren't shipping their pirated movies over to China. It's quite the opposite. |

Okay, here's theory #2: They are doing better with overseas openings lately, so they want to make sure ASM makes some money before crashing and burning in the states :)
Clarification for the impaired: I'm sure the movie will do quite well in this country. |

Watched it last night. But why won't they release "The Avengers" in Japan sooner? I'm still waiting...

Look, trailers are meant to get people interested/excited/aware of a movie, yes? That's why they exist? I saw all the trailers. Every single thing they presented in those trailers (the effects, the dialogue, the brief plot moments presented) looked absolutely awful to me. That's the only reason I reacted the way I did. But as a big comic fan myself, I didn't WANT to see it fail...they had just done nothing to make me think it wouldn't fail. And since all I have to go on is the trailers... I think we've all seen movies that turned out great but had shitty trailers. It looks like this movie is going to succeed despite the trailers (again, my opinion of those is my own) and that's a good thing. I did say I'd see it and that I could be wrong from the beginning. I am waiting to go to a matinee in a few weeks, but it sounds like it's great. So that's a good thing. |

I don't see why Spider-Man is the poster child for the "judging a movie based on the trailer" thing. EVERYONE FUCKING DOES IT.

Apparently, deciding whether or not you're interested in a film by watching the thing that was created to generate interest in the film is some kind of madness.

In theory, a trailer should always represent the final product, but it often times doesn't in practice. Good movies can have bad trailers (like this movie apparently) and bad movies can have good trailers (The Phantom Menace). Because of that, I don't let trailers be my sole judge of interest in a movie. If the subject matter appeals to me, then I'm going to go see it even if it has a shitty trailer. I don't see how anyone who loves comic books or Spider-Man in particular wouldn't want to go see this movie just on that subject alone, regardless of the shitty trailer. |
Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)
'Amazing Spider-Man' Nets $7.5 Million at Midnight
The Amazing Spider-Man earned an estimated $7.5 million from midnight shows last night. Among comic book movies, that's much lower than The Avengers ($18.7 million) and The Dark Knight, but about on par with Iron Man 2 ($7.5 million). Sony is also reporting that the figure is identical to Spider-Man 3's midnight haul from the first weekend of May 2007. IMAX showings at 300 locations accounted for $1.2 million, or 16 percent of the gross. While the Spider-Man 3 comparison is a flattering one (that movie wound up earning $151.1 million through its first three days), it isn't really an apples-to-apples one. With kids still in school, the first weekend of May rarely turns out strong midnight numbers, while all kids and many adults are off leading in to the Fourth of July holiday. Also, the way in which audiences attend midnight movies has changed noticeably in the past few years: the top eight midnight openings ever have taken place since 2009 (only five of the top eight opening weekends are in that same time frame). Finally, with the addition of 3D and the drastically increased number of IMAX venues, tickets for The Amazing Spider-Man are much more expensive than those for Spider-Man 3. Still, The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 are very different movies. The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot with a completely fresh cast and some weird baggage associated with the previous franchise, while Spider-Man 3 was the highly-anticipated follow-up to the first two entries in Sam Raimi's franchise. For The Amazing Spider-Man to have the same midnight haul, even with inflated ticket prices and a more hospitable release date, is a minor accomplishment for sure. It's hard to predict exactly how The Amazing Spider-Man will fare through its first six days, given the lack of comparable Tuesday releases. It is clear now that $100 million is a guarantee, while $150 million also appears to be a very reachable figure. |
Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)
I didn't even know or hear about the midnight screenings until yesterday. So another bang up job by the marketing department on getting word out.

Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)
The best comparison might be with the first Transformers, which opened on a Tuesday. I don't remember what the midnight earnings were for it.
I think $7.5 mil is a decent start. I don't expect 12:00 am Tuesday showings to be all that popular. |

Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)
My sister saw it at midnight. She liked it. Says Garfield is a better Parker and that this one is better than SM1 and SM3 but is behind SM2. Though she likes this one more.

People always judge stuff based on the information that trickles in; I don't think Spider-Man here is that much different so its weird that people act like they're above judging a movie based on the trailer and being proved wrong as though it doesn't happen all the time. |
