Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)

Webb did fine overall, and gave the studio exactly what they wanted - a darker reboot of Spider-man. Plus he doesn't have much pull since he's still trying to get into Hollywood, so he won't be pushing back against anything they ask for, such as the shitty 3D used in this one.

The movie itself was okay but was mostly too much of a retread for me.

I don't know, if he really gave the studio what they wanted I'd think there wouldn't be last minute cuts that remove large chunks of the story.

I agree with this assessment, and would say that the parts that weren't a retread were quite well done, so I'm looking forward to a sequel now that the origin story "unpleasantness" is over with.

Wouldn't be the first time, might be saving material for #2 or a 1.5 like they did for Raimi's Spider-man movies. Somehow I don't think Webb is the one that went back and chose to take those scenes out. They also may have wanted to keep the run time down. There's a lot that goes on with this high budget studio flicks, Fox seems to be the worst about it (Spider-man was Columbia, not sure their history with it).

(ie - Ridley Scott's original cut of Kingdom of Heaven vs what got released.)

I thought the first film was one of the most uneven, poorly edited big budget films I've seen.

Having said that, I did see some promise in there that a sequel could find its footing now that we've got all the seen-it-before stuff out of the way. Webb needs to make this one lean, tight motherfucker.

Spider-man 2.1 only put back in a few minutes of extra stuff, whereas based on trailers and earlier reports of this movie there's entire plot points with Peter's parents or the army of Lizard people removed, so it seems far more significant. This article was posted before that discusses it - http://badassdigest.com/2012/07/05/w...ng-spider-man/

And yes, I'm sure Webb wasn't the one that took the scenes out. Hence why I question whether he gave the studio what they wanted, presuming that those were all studio cuts and decisions.

I have no problems with Webb since I loved 500 Days of Summer and thought there was clearly a lot more to Amazing Spider-Man then what we got. Just surprised the studio was happy enough to bring him back.

Tough to say, it's unusual since you'd figure they read the shooting script beforehand.

I hate the fuckin' search engine here. When I did a search for "spiderman" this is the thread that came up first.

I can't find the ASM2 thread either.

Anyhoo, I never heard of this girl before but I can definitely picture her as MJ:

Yeah, the title for the sequel is hard to search for, even on Google.

Comes up 5th.

It's because Spiderman is improperly spelled. :p

Ah, haha, I had to search for Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Spider-man, and Spider-man 2 before it showed up on the front page.

Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)

I found it by searching on TASM thanks to the part 2 thread :)

Finally got around to watching this yesterday. Question:
Spoiler:
If they're dabbling in crossing genes, how there be an antidote? Once the metamorphosing takes place that means the DNA has been changed. You can't change back with a gas......

Re: Spider-Man (2012, Marc Webb)

I think I finally figured out who Michael Massey's "man in shadows" character is supposed to be. He's
Spoiler:
Peter's dad.
Apparently Webb has gone on record that the hat he wears during the final scene with Connor's is a clue to his identity. Well watch the beginning of the movie. When Peter is playing hide and seek, he sees
Spoiler:
a pair of shoes behind a curtain. Peter pulls the curtain expecting to find his father. Instead there's the same hat Michael Massey wears, propped up by a broom. I'm guessing that hat belongs to Peter's father.

I know that in the comics,
Spoiler:
Peter's parents returned as androids. Did they ever return actually alive at some point?

So then it'd be a huge departure for the movies, if my theory is correct. What about the Ultimate Spider-Man comics? Did they ever return there?

Not for real, that I'm aware of. There was a time when it was thought Richard Parker returned, but it turned out to be an aged clone of Peter himself.
