Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

I just can't muster up any excitement over this film. It's too soon to be lionizing Zuckerberg. I mean what did he do that Tom from MySpace didn't a couple years before? Aside from have a better design sense and a tighter social community element. I don't get it.

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

they butchered that Radiohead song.

and as for the new trailer, it makes the film appear more dramatic than I was anticipating, but i'm still extremely look forward to this.

Same here. If it weren't a Fincher film, I'd have no interest at all.

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

I'm pretty much only going to see this because of David Fincher's involvement.

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

I really enjoyed the end bit but I too am only interested because of Fincher and not the source material.

This is how I feel. I thought this was a terrible idea, but I opened myself up to trusting Fincher, and that last trailer sold it for me.

What, pray tell, makes you think the movie lionizes Zuckerberg? From what I've heard, the script ensures that, regardless of your feelings on the film, you'll come away thinking that Zuckerberg and Sean Parker are tremendous assholes.

The very existence of the film is enough lionizing for me. It's only been six years since the founding of Facebook, it's too soon to have Zuckerberg's doppleganger plastered on movie posters. I'll ask again, did he really do anything that the founders of MySpace, Friendster, Match.com, mIRC, Digg, etc. didn't do? I just don't see him as someone who blazed a new trail that others hadn't already made. Zuckerberg enhanced the social community element but the industry was moving in that direction anyway. He was just smart enough to have a more user-intuitive design than MySpace.

The Gates/Jobs tale is far more interesting IMO and that only rated a made-for-tv movie.

Well, judging from what looks to be the major conflict in the film, that's precisely the ground this film covers....

Where's the story with Myspace, Friendster, Match.com (really?), mIRC (again, really?), or Digg?

It's not about lionizing Fuckerberg. It's about the story behind Facebook. There's no story behind those other things.

A MySpace/Friendster/Match/Digg/mIRC movie wouldn't sell to audiences like a Facebook movie. Strike while the iron is hot.

Well IRC is Internet Relay Chat. mIRC was just a client that was widely used.

Think of it as a semi-private chat room before chat rooms became known to the public. It's still widely used today.

mIRC was awesome. It taught me how to love. I guess my point is that most of the pioneering web companies have sordid stories behind them that would make great films. I lived through the dot com explosion and the stories behind the companies and executives are leap years crazier than Facebook's history. So I find it hard to believe that Mark Zuckerberg's short professional life is so incredibly interesting that it warrants a film. But I'll try to keep an open mind because I like Fincher, Sorkin and Eisenberg.
