Lynch only because he gets most of his funding from foreign investors. Scorsese doesn't, I'm willing to bet. Don't know about PTA.

How could I forget Cameron? That would've been another obvious one.

Soderbergh might be one, actually.

PTA and Magnolia. granted there were stars in it and if my memory is correct, he actually told new line that it was gonna be at least 180 min long and they gave him the funding for it

I've always heard Spike Lee bandied about as a true final cut director

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

Spike Lee definitely had final cut at one point. I don't know if he still does. But I wouldn't be surprised if he still does. Once you get established for having final cut in your contract, it's not so easily taken away.

I heard that the reason it took so long to get Avatar off the ground is that Cameron refused to make another film until he got final cut.

That was a bygone era. Not sure even PTA could get that sort of deal now.

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

According to Wikipedia these directors also have Final Cut
Woody Allen
Terrence Malick
Ridley Scott
Coen Brothers
Tarantino
Wolfgang Peterson
Peter Weir
M. Night Shamalamadingdong

And I can't imagine Scorsese not having final cut on his products, can you really see someone trying to tell Martin and Thelma that they have to change the movie?

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

I imagine it would depend on the budget to some extent. There's a difference between a PTA movie with a budget of $25 million or so and a $100 million-plus movie that aspires to be a blockbuster.

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

Found a Variety article from January that states the following directors also have final cut
Tim Burton
Michael Bay
Ron Howard

It also said that Stephen Sommers had final cut on GI Joe

Peter Weir should make more movies.

as to Scorsese, I think he ran into problems with the Wiensteins. Who didn't?

Yes, Weir should.

....maybe Tarantino?

Don't know about Weir, but he definitely should.

I'm pretty sure Tarantino does have final cut. The Weinsteins know who really put them on the map and made them huge and they'll always give him carte blanche.

Yes, even if it means splitting a project into two movies instead of making him edit down one.

Not necessarily, at least in earlier days; in Down and Dirty Pictures, Tarantino said that Harvey Weinstein pressured him to cut out the ear-cutting scene from Reservoir Dogs, and the two got into a screaming match over Jackie Brown's length. Tarantino held firm both times, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Weinsteins have pushed back recently as well, especially in terms of the release of Grindhouse which marked the last film Robert Rodriguez made a film for them despite working with them closely for almost the past fifteen years.

Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

Just by the lighting and use of camera can one tell that it's a Fincher film. Damn.

Also...I'm game for this more than before.

As much as I wasn't sold on it, this looks like it will be good.
