I would think more people on this forum would be aware of the fact that a film's subject does not determine it's quality.
Ebert's famous quote is:
"A movie is not about what it is about, but about how it is about it."
Fincher has never made a bad movie and he's hit it out of the park at least twice (Fight Club, Zodiac). So quit with all the poo-pooing when all you have to work with are the concept and a teaser (which everyone seems to like).

Alien 3 was bad..BUT....nobody counts that one cuz Fox really really fucked him over on that and just about everyone who knows anything beyond just the film knows it too.

I really wish Fox hadn't edited the documentary for Alien 3 on the 2 disc. I'm sure that the whole show would show exactly what happened, since they really just gloss over it in the edited version.

As the NIN Hotline points out, today, the Nine Inch Nails website's news feed featured a message from Trent Reznor announcing that he and longtime collaborator Atticus Ross have written the score for David Fincher's new film The Social Network, which is about the founding of Facebook. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, and Justin Timberlake.
Reznor writes, "I've always loved David's work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned." He also mentions that he and Ross are currently in the process of "distilling the large amount of music we've written for this down to a satisfying record (or two)." He adds, "The film opens October 1 in the U.S. with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that."

Fincher's visual flair was honed to perfection with this film. His direction sublime.
The cinematography of Darius Khondji and Conrad W. Hall, the art direction, a few pitch perfect perfomances, Howard Shore's score, etc.
There is a lot to admire.
I'm not saying it's a great film, but it's not a bad film... not in comparison to the pure shit oozing out of Hollywood these days.

On the other hand, Panic Room has my least favorite shot Fincher's ever done, the one where the camera zooms around to establish the geography of the house and goes through the handle of the coffee maker.

Panic Room really clicked with me. I loved it all around, and have watch it many times since it's release. More frequently than Fight Club (though i'm not saying it's a better film).
I think people's expectations were too high, and the movie was too "standard", for Fincher.

Panic Room was a B-movie given the A-movie treatment, it was well done for what it was but when your resume consists of Seven, The Game, Fight Club and Zodiac, of course its going to pale by comparison.

Panic Room had rewrites which could have altered Fincher's direction. Remember, Nicole Kidman and Hayden Panettiere were first cast. But when Nicole had to drop out due to injuries sustained when she was doing Moulin Rouge, they brought in Jodie Foster and replaced Hayden with Kristen Stewart. And then Jodie decided to rework the script because she wanted to change her character. How much of this affected Fincher is unclear, but they were already filming when they switched the actresses. Not to mention Jodie was also 5 months pregnant. So I can't give the whole blame to Fincher. There were other things that had a hand in it.

I have always seen Panic Room as a Jodie Foster movie directed by David Fincher as opposed to a David Fincher movie starring Jodie Foster, if that makes any sense. I saw that shot as Fincher's way of winking at fans of his work in a movie that lacked some of his trademarks.

I'm a huge FIncher fan, and have seen everything he has done with the exception of Alien3. I still can't bring myself to watch it as I was a huge fan of the first two. But when I do finally watch it I'm sure I will enjoy it for what it is.
I also love Panic Room but can understand how some might not. I've been waiting for a decent release of the Game, I keep hoping that with every new movie of his they will finally do right by it. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before it comes out on Blu-ray.

I loved Panic Room. Great performances from Foster and Whitaker. Only thing that i didn't like was that actor that played Fosters son. Horrible performance!

I liked Panic Room. Out of his resume..yeah...it's the "simplest" but it's still good. Better than most average directors' work.

Yeah I don't understand people calling Panic Room a bad film. It's an exceptionally well made B movie, as someone previously mentioned.
