Wow. That. Was. Fucking. Awesome.

Now that is how you do a trailer. Looks phenomenal. I was most looking forward to Wolverine this summer, but that's on the top of my list now.

I had no idea Jennifer Morrison was in this. Cool.

I think that a lot of people might want to get into Star Trek, but feel like there is just too much canon to sift through, or that the "geeky" stigma it has attached to it turns them off. This is being touted as a "come one, come all" type of Trek film and I think that fact alone will bring in many people who may have been on the fence about the series before.

I'll bet it does $52m opening and finishes with $147m domestic.

Well done trailer. It just builds and builds.

I'm liking the transporter effect, too. Interesting choice going horizontal, rather than vertical. Like with each movie having a cooler and cooler Enterprise; the transporter effect always seemed to get more elaborate with each movie.

I saw the latest trailer with Watchmen today and I realized this is the first Trek Film I've ever been truly excited about. I can't wait to see this.

I had the same sentiments about the trailer. The first trailer (not the teaser) felt like it had the wrong tone for Star Trek. If the movie carries the tone outlined in this trailer, which is a more cerebral science fiction movie that has a sense of scale (that shot of the city is amazing) that only modern SFX will allow, i'm definitely looking forward to this.

People loved the ST movies because they were done on a scale that you didn't see in the TV series - incredible special effects and ambitious set pieces. This movie looks like it's really trying to transcend the latest series, and TV in general, by pulling out all the stops.

Re: Star Trek XI (Abrams, 2009) - Part 2

I've only seen the new trailer in a tiny online version, and maybe I'll change my mind when I see it on the big screen in front of Watchmen later today, but to me it made this look like yet another explodey-boomy "how much stuff can we cram into each frame?" CGI fest. No thanks.

Then again, Lost is the best TV show I've ever seen, so maybe it's just my reaction to the trailer and I'll give the movie a chance. Depends on the reviews, probably.

A question for those that are in the know about the Star Trek universe. Who actually controls the direction the Universe goes in? Now that the Rodenberrys have passed away, who now holds the torch for being 'the man' when it comes to anything/everything star trek?

Paramount basically. It was Berman/Braga, but they've been ousted and replaced by Abrams for now.

I hope Paramount stays true to Roddenberry's vision, and it looks like they might have. Why did Rodenberry give up control of the franchise? Or did he sell it?

And didn't he also pass the baton on to Brannon/Braga before he passed? My old man memory is getting faded (and shoot, it's been a good amount of time since Next Generation was on the air) but I seem to recall that they were pretty much assuming duties on Next Generation as Roddenberry was taking a lesser role, I presume do to failing health.

Re: Star Trek XI (Abrams, 2009) - Part 2

Paramount has had most of the control of the Trek franchise since pretty much day one. Roddenberry has been kept on in some fashion mainly because he has some pretty good ideas. Disputes with Paramount kept him from day to day workings on the third season of TOS, and it kinda shows. After TNG's first season, he was again pushed to more of an advisory role and after the writer's strike during S2, TNG's 3rd season is where it really took off. People bag on Berman and Braga, but they were responsible for growing the franchise during the TNG years and for a lot of the well-respected episodes. Their mistake was putting on blinders and thinking only they knew best. That's why someone like Abrams was brought in, someone with vision to make it a good movie, but listening to his writers who are big fans of the Trek novels (which is where they got details like Kirk's mom being named Winona, never said on screen, only novels).

As for the new trailer: agreed with everyone who said it's much better. It's selling to the "normals" (or Herberts, if you will), while still showing things for the longtime fans.

I'm still unsure of the basic premise, as I understand it, but I am willing to give this film a chance.

Re: Star Trek XI (Abrams, 2009) - Part 2

That was a phenomenal trailer. I read the the music used is from the film's score.

The only sticking point for me is John Cho as Sulu. When he's fighting in his gold spacesuit, all I see is "Harold in Space!". Hopefully, he'll do a better job in the actual movie.

[geek] As for the horizontal transporter effect, the Cardassians used those too in TNG/DS9. [/geek]

So who do trek fans want to take control of the franchise? JJ Abrams? Bryan Fuller?

At this point, I'm just happy it would be anybody other than B&B.

No kidding. $65-80mil on opening weekend would already be enough to put it in range of total gross for most Trek movies.
