Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)

re: Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)
The sun is setting on Richard Donner's career. Seeing as this may be his last shot, he should make this film a hybrid of Lethal Weapon 5 and The Goonies 2.

In that "In Search of the Last Action Heroes" doc, Shane Black briefly talks about his Lethal Weapon 5. I wish they would at least try and get him back on and use his treatment. If Donner can't actually direct, then let Black.

I don’t know if the series takes place in real time. But in the original movie Roger was celebrating his 50th birthday.
In 2020, he would technically be 83.

Make Murtaugh's son Nic a police recruit and he gets in over his head in an undercover operation and Martin and Roger have to get him out.

I posted this a few years ago... this was what Black had in mind:
“I wrote a 62-page treatment with my friend Chuck for “Lethal Weapon 5” that would’ve been, I think, a very good movie. It was interesting. It was essentially an older Riggs and Murtagh in New York City during the worst blizzard in east coast history, fighting a team of expert Blackwater guys from Afghanistan that’s smuggling antiquities. And we had a young character that actually counter-pointed them. But I didn’t wanna do what people do when they’re trying to transition which is, they sorta put the two older guys in the movie, but really it’s about their son! And he’s gonna take over and we’re gonna do a spinoff. Fuck that, if they’re gonna be in the movie, they’re gonna be in the movie — I don’t care how old they are.”

I don't want Nic (or Butters or Riggs, Jr.) to carry the franchise forward, but I do want an end to Riggs and Murtagh that makes sense. Why would they both be in NY? And there's need to be something that makes sense of pulling them out of retirement at this point.

It almost sounds like Die Hard scenario.

Donner hasn't made a film in 15 years. This really needs to go to someone else, like Shane Black. Of course, that happened with The Predator and look for that turned out.

Meh, Donner's still a kid, barely a nonagenarian, he'll do fine.

Donner is also 90 and turns 91 next Spring. Would WB/AT&T really want to give him a $100-150M to direct this? I know he's directed every film in the series, but yeah he's been out of the game too long now.

Thinking back to other stories I've heard, they'll only be able to insure the production (with Donner directing) if they have a capable "back-up" director in the wings, ready to take over. Of course, everything's in flux at the moment, so I doubt it'll happen with him, -or happen at all.

I'm sure they don't want to shoot the way they did on the last film, basically without a script.

It's one thing to have Gibson star in a tiny indie film which doesn't need to make much money to break even, and it's one thing for him to be behind the camera.
But you can't have him on-screen as the lead -- especially in a movie about a renegade rogue cop. Bad, bad optics
A reboot makes FAR more sense than a sequel.

If this ever gets made, it'll go straight to HBO Max.

Mel said in that Clip that Donner is working on it. But, Donner isn't a writer. Someone has to be working on a script, but I don't think it was revealed if anyone was actually commissioned. So I'm guessing 90 year old Donner is just trying to convince WB to pay for 1 more.

It would be parody at this point. Go the way of the continually failing Die Hard sextolgy or whatever.

My God it'll be 25+yrs since the last one! At best, maybe a low budget, gritty film? Chris Rock as the lead with cameos from the old gang?

Just realized that although Murtaugh was 50 in the first movie, he was only 40 when they filmed it. He definitely looked older than that.
I don't see how this works if they're expecting both actors to do action scenes. It'll actually be laughable.
