I wanted him to kill both Murtaugh and Riggs in the last one. only way they beat him was by stabbing him in the back when he wasn't looking, hopefully the fifth one will make the two characters real and likable again and not the cartoon characters they've become

I thought that was real. Only way they would have taken down Jet.

I for one really liked Rene Russo. Since she's married to Riggs and had his kid, you kind of need her. Plus, I thought it was kind of touching at the end of LW4 when Riggs visited his wife's grave and said that he had finally moved on.

After Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto does Gibson really want to slum it anymore? He hasn't even acted in a film in a couple years.

The first two movies in the series were great. They were hard R rating and took the characters seriously with hald decent plot lines. Even Joe Pesci's character in the movie was just about bearable. Then along comes Lethal Weapon 3 with a terrible story, a really weak villain and an annoying as hell Joe Pesci. It was watered down crappolla. Then we are treated to Lethal Weapon 4 with a non-mulleted Riggs going all famuily guy, Chris Rock being his usual unfunny annoying self, watered down action, another terrible story and Joe Pesci getting so annoying that if i ever bump into him he is going to get a smack in the chops from me. A pregnant Rene Russo really adds to the plot.......yeah right. The best thing about the movie is Jet Li and like with most of his US movies he is simply wasted. They needed to keep these movies gritty and violent with good action. All that disappeared quickly after part 2. Seeing Shane Blacks name really gets me excited with almosty any project, but seeing this makes me have doubts. Mel these days is OLD and Glover is even OLDER. They should leave well alone at this point. I seem to remember that part 4 didn't make a huge profit anyway...so whats the point. Re-tool the project into a new buddy/cop/action movie and get some young blood in there. Shane Blacks writing is great and i am sure it will be a great movie, just don't call it Lethal Weapon 5.

Kill Riggs in the opening 10 minutes. It would be a shocker and might even make for a great movie. It's also the one reason Murtaugh would come out of retirement.

These movies have become too "jokey" anyway - do something dark and gritty.

Gotta say, that would be pretty lethal.

Personally I'd be more interested in Gibson revisiting Maverick for another outing.

I kinda hope they kill off Russo. Now that would pull them both outta retirement.
And it would make Riggs be more like the Riggs in LW 1 (all suicidal and the I dont give a shit attitude) since yet another girl of his was killed.

I'd also be up for a Sequel with no Murtagh or Riggs but instead a complete film featuring Pesci's and Rock's characters called "They fuck you With The Sequels!"

I've got it: We have a new character named Mutt Ross, an LAPD Officer who stumbles upon a conspiracy within city hall. Mutt is kind of a loner, too cool for school kind of dude who likes wearing leather jackets and easily dislocates his shoulder (and he has a bit of a drinking problem). During his investigation, his path crosses with recently retired Martin Riggs whose wife had been killed by someone within the department. Together they fight the forces and discover a secret nobody will see coming!

I know. Why do you think The Dark Knight is going to miss beating Titanic's record?

re: Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)

For any who didn't see this news bit going around:

The Pitch For “Lethal Weapon 5”
I wrote a 62-page treatment with my friend Chuck for “Lethal Weapon 5” that would’ve been, I think, a very good movie. It was interesting. It was essentially an older Riggs and Murtagh in New York City during the worst blizzard in east coast history, fighting a team of expert Blackwater guys from Afghanistan that’s smuggling antiquities. And we had a young character that actually counter-pointed them. But I didn’t wanna do what people do when they’re trying to transition which is, they sorta put the two older guys in the movie, but really it’s about their son! And he’s gonna take over and we’re gonna do a spinoff. Fuck that: If they’re gonna be in the movie, they’re gonna be in the movie — I don’t care how old they are.

Defending Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson didn’t know if he wanted to do [“Lethal Weapon 5”] or not. There was negotiations and some things were happening with Mel. I don’t believe anybody should be held accountable for anything they say while drunk. If you say it sober, that’s one thing, but if you’re drunk, I mean, I would say the most heinous things to you. But unfortunately, what he said while drunk was enough to yank him from projects. I worked on “The Cold Warrior,” and that was with Mel. So I lost both of those [films].

I know there is like zero chance this gets made... but ya never know.

Murtagh was too old for this shit nearly 30 years ago!

Sounds awful. Moving it to the east coast would suck. It's an LA film! They're too old to be cops so what's the explanation?

I don't want to be spoiled by watching it, but it's weird that they would skip 5 and I hope that it's immediately addressed.
It's good to see Mel Gibson getting work again.
Does it have a release date yet?

re: Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)

With the TV series airing this Fall, I think the door is closed on any future potential sequels.

Plus, wasn't Murtagh celebrating his 50th birthday in 1987 (the year of the first movie)?

That would make him 79 going on 80 now. Way past retirement age. Murtagh would probably be in an assisted living home at that age. And why the hell would him and Riggs be living in NYC?

Interesting that Black actually wrote a treatment for a 5th movie for shits and giggles.

re: Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)

Ah, but why not have them as private detectives? Something Shane Black would be familiar with. Speaking of, how interesting would that have been if he cast Mel Gibson/Danny Glover as the goof detectives for The Nice Guys. Would have been an unofficial Lethal Weapon sequel.
