Yeah, 1 and 2 had some pretty dark stuff and 3 had a darker storyline for Murtaugh after he shot one of his son’s friends but Riggs’ storyline got a lot more lighthearted when Rene Russo showed up. Then of course, part 4 brought in Chris Rock and shit pretty much went into sitcom territory after that.

Neato mosquito, I am thrilled that we are getting another Lethal Weapon. As others have noted, it might turn out like the last Die Hard which I almost like to forget is a Die Hard film but still...old as heck or not, please bring back as many cast members from the first 4 films as possible, that is all I ask.

re: Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)

I love the Lethal Weapon films. Martin Riggs may be my favorite movie character of all-time. I was hoping we'd get to see the kids/grandkids all grown up one day. I can't imagine the character of Murtaugh would still be working. He was 50 in the first movie, so he'd be well into his 80's now. I was somewhat happy with 4 if it was the last one, but I'm up for one that's meant to end it all if that's its purpose. I wouldn't even be against one of the kids carrying the franchise into the future, but this should be it for Riggs and Murtaugh. They really are too old for this shit at this point.

Looks like this may be a go with Mel Gibson directing it.

Yeah, I don't see Warner Bros. giving the greenlight. Gibson as an actor, maybe. Gibson as the director/face of the movie? No way.

I’m more interested in this now than I was before. I liked Donner as much as the next guy but a 90+ year old directing this had me worried. Gibson is more than capable to direct this.

A decent cop movie starring actors in their late 60s and late 70s has me more concerned than anything.

For me it would make sense if Riggs and Murtaugh are long retired and are brought back because a case they worked on in their past is brought to light.

It would make no sense if they are still working at the LAPD being long past retirement age.

Holy shit, Murtaugh’s daughter is 61

So she was like 26 or 27 in the original. Wow. Yeah I know she played a high school student in the original.

and in the original Murtaugh was celebrating his 50th birthday. If this series is congruent with our timeline, he would be 84 even though Glover is almost 10 years younger.

Seriously. Are we all collectively ignoring his past in a "time heals all wounds" manner or something? That's something that's had me curious hearing about all these projects he's involved in lately.

Seems so. Especially after Hacksaw Ridge came out and garnered Oscar nominations.

re: Lethal Weapon 5 (D: Mel Gibson)

It sounds like he’s said something pretty dumb shit over the years, none of which I agree with, but is that the line we’re drawing for our Hollywood actors? Dumb shit they say when they’re drunk?

I’m in no way defending his statements but he said them and he apologized for them. Honestly, I’m more concerned with his DV stuff than I am with a drunken tirade. (I’m also not Jewish, which is why I didn’t respond to Malina’s tweet. It’s certainly appears to be more personal to him).

I’m not trying to start an argument here, I’m legitimately asking what the line is that we draw for entertainers?

A dead guy directing the movie would have me worried as well.

Yeah, I know he died. He was considering directing this when he was still alive though and that worried me.

Donner was a hell of a director though. If anyone could direct a movie while dead, it’s Dick Donner!

I don't know if his comments to his ex were made while drunk.

Personally I'm able to remove the artist from the art. Being a straight white guy that's VERY easy.

It's strange how the "cancel culture" of Hollywood works.

Johnny Depp is on everyone's shitlist, but Mel Gibson's transgressions -- which are worse than Depp's -- are ignored or forgiven.

^ Cancel culture is definitely an odd thing. It makes you wonder who/what is behind getting “cancelled”.

I’m not sure I’d say that Gibson’s transgressions were ignored. He was blacklisted for quite a few years and he’s only been coming back for a short time - taking mostly glorified cameos and bad guy roles. Hacksaw Ridge gave him a bump back toward the top but even with that he’s certainly not the beloved A-lister he used to be.

Yeah, Glover is only like 15 years older than Traci Wolfe.

Robert Meyer Burnett (who is Jewish for what it's worth) said he's met Mel Gibson on several occasions, likes him quite a bit, and doesn't hold his drunken, racist rants against him.

Just to give some context. RMB used to work at Warner Bros when the Lethal Weapon movies were made. He's currently an Indie writer, producer and director.
