It's been 12 to 18 months since I last read the book and have been waiting for the movie for over a year now.
As someone else noted, it's not a bad film. It's just an incredibly difficult film to market, and the marketing they have done--namely that ill-advised trailer--has already done irreparable viral damage. The expense of a national release must seem risky against the potential boxoffice for a film like this, especially to TWC, which shed several more jobs just last week.

The final nail will likely be a strictly limited release on Nov. 25 but no major award nominations, which I think is likely. There's some strong performances in this, but nothing particularly innovative. Some technical nominations for sure, but those won't put bums on seats.

Beautiful, painful book. I stopped reading it before bed because I could not stop thinking about mortality, relationships, life, survival, and just could not get myself to sleep.

I was really excited about this movie when I heard that it was supposed to be faithful in tone to the book, capture the essence of it.

And now I know that it's going to be shit. Just watched the trailer, and I'll be damned if these idiots didn't just go and make "The Day After Tomorrow 2: Day Harder."

You should read the whole thread because you would learn that the trailer is completely unrepresentative of the tone of the film. Read the Esquire article if you want to see that they got this one right.

I've read the thread. Tough shit. I'm taking my cue right from the horse's mouth, the film's producers who empowered the marketers to do what they do. If that's the perception they want out there, then that's the perception they'll get from me. And not a penny from my effing purse.

I worked on the film. It is nothing like the trailer. The Weinstein brothers had nothing to do with the actual physical production of the film, they are merely distributing it and doing a horrible job of it. The producers of the film had little to no say regarding that trailer. They didn't "empower" anyone aside from partnering with them to distribute the film, and I have a feeling at this point they are regretting it.

Being stubborn is only going to mean you miss out on a great film.

Ok, but I swear, if
Spoiler:
they actually decide to explain away the armageddon as global warming and hurricanes, I'll be very very angry, cause that book did not invent some cockamamie backstory. The only clue is the ash and the "blinding light". Now what on earth else could that be but nuclear holocaust. If they turn this story into yet another Al Gore fest, I'll poop right on the seat.

No, all that only exists in the trailer, and I still don't understand why they felt the need to explain it like that.

As stated previously, none of that news and disaster footage appears in the movie, which makes the trailer all the more egregious. There's no mention whatsoever of what caused the end of everything. The trailer also suggests an overall "thriller" pace that the movie doesn't have.

Re: 'The Road' - Nov. 2008

I don't mind what the vibe the trailer gives off, I highly doubt it'll be come to be some reason Lamphorn gave off in his spoiler, as long as it's a good movie the trailer can do whatever it wants to get people to see it. I mean look at Inglourious Basterds, I and many on here knew
Spoiler:
it wasn't all about Basterds but that it also had the plot of a French Jewish girl who also wanted to take down them dirty Nazis too...
. And people still liked it.

True, but you have to keep in mind the fact that Tarantino directed it. I think people put his faith in him, and accepted the (great) movie anyways.

I am really looking forward to this movie, especially after reading the book. Sadly, I think this will either flop and/or will be a very limited release.

I can't wait to see this, but why do some of the shots in the new trailer look like they were shot on low-res video? It was kind of jarring, seeing it mixed in with the high res film/digital (whatever this was filmed in) shots.

Now that's the trailer they needed month's ago, when it could have made a difference. Very nice. But, I see they couldn't resist inserting shots that aren't in the movie (including, I'm pretty sure, that exploding house).

I like what was edited in the new trailer but...that symphonic music was weird to me. Also..they need to stop using that man falling and yelling scream. Always out of place...well...almost always.

I agree, I actually hate the trailer and having just seen the movie in full, the trailer I think is a tad deceptive. As for the movie, I wont say much only that I was completely blown away by it, notably the ending.

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article...on-november-25

I am posting this only because there seems to be some misinformation running around as to how many markets John Hillcoat's The Road will be hitting on November 25 as it finally makes its long-awaited theatrical debut.

Recent rumors stated its wide release was whittled down to theaters in only New York and Los Angeles so I did a quick check and it appears it's going to be hitting 31 markets on November 25. Weinstein has also confirmed an additional roll out, but haven't confirmed markets. So I can't tell you where the film will go from here.

Below is the list I was given directly from Weinstein.

Atlanta
Austin
Baltimore
Boston
Chicago
Dallas-Ft. Worth
Denver
Detroit
Erie
Houston
Kansas City
Los Angeles
Miami-Ft. Lauderdale
Minneapolis-St. Paul
New York
Oklahoma City
Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne
Palm Springs
Philadelphia
Phoenix
Pittsburgh
Portland, OR
Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto
San Antonio
San Diego
San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose
Santa Barbara-San Marcos-San Luis Obispo
Seattle-Tacoma
St. Louis
Tampa -St. Petersburg – Sarasota
Washington, DC

Only one theater confirmed for Portland. I hate going downtown, so I hope a few theaters on the eastside of town get it and just haven't announced anything yet.

It figures such a great film is stuck with such a piss-poor studio.

I can't believe in the trailer they
Spoiler:
show Guy Pearce's character. Anyone who hasn't read the book will be expecting him and come the end of the film, realize he'll be showing up there, thus killing any tension regarding what the kid is going to do.

Yep, I thought that was a really poor choice.

Yeah, terrible decision imo.
