Re: 'The Road' - Nov. 2008

People working in the film industry are getting dumber by the minute.

Why the hell would you market the film AT ALL if your not going to at least make it available to see?
They should all be beaten to death.

The locations on the list are confusing at best.

I just expected to be able to see it opening day, but NO I cannot because these dumb bastards are to stupid to make money.
I have spoken to a number of people who were all waiting to see this and no one is going to be able to see it anywhere close to me.
I live in a nice triangle between Indy, Louisville and Cincinnati. You would THINK they MIGHT try to make it available to AT LEAST 1 of these 3 cities with a combined population of close to 1.5 MILLION people???

Freakin Idiots, they can go to hell.

Looks like I won't be seeing it on opening night either. While I could drive to L.A., Pasadena or Irvine (all about 45 minutes away) to check it out, I'll wait until it shows up at one of the 70 (!) screens within a five mile radius of my place. (Seriously, there's an AMC and Edwards just feet from each other...50+ screens and not ONE is showing the movie I've anticipated most since the book was released? WTF?)

Limited releases (or any consumer-based test markets) have to do with demographics, not necessarily population counts. Phoenix isn't normally in the standard 13 (?) test markets, even though we have the six largest population in the USA. That said, I'm no stranger to being left out on seeing smaller releases on the big screen. So I like that it's coming to Phoenix.

I am posting this only because there seems to be some misinformation running around as to how many markets John Hillcoat's The Road will be hitting on November 25 as it finally makes its long-awaited theatrical debut.

Recent rumors stated its wide release was whittled down to theaters in only New York and Los Angeles so I did a quick check and it appears it's going to be hitting 31 markets on November 25. Weinstein has also confirmed an additional roll out, but haven't confirmed markets. So I can't tell you where the film will go from here.

Below is the list I was given directly from Weinstein.

Atlanta
Austin
Baltimore
Boston
Chicago
Dallas-Ft. Worth
Denver
Detroit
Erie
Houston
Kansas City
Los Angeles
Miami-Ft. Lauderdale
Minneapolis-St. Paul
New York
Oklahoma City
Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne
Palm Springs
Philadelphia
Phoenix
Pittsburgh
Portland, OR
Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto
San Antonio
San Diego
San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose
Santa Barbara-San Marcos-San Luis Obispo
Seattle-Tacoma
St. Louis
Tampa -St. Petersburg – Sarasota
Washington, DC
Thank goodness its opening in my area.

Re: 'The Road' - Nov. 2008

I understand key demos, but this is just stupid, for this film.

Indy is around 800,000 people. You put it in one theater and bang, you have a great showing, people will come.

The dumbest part of this is that I keep seeing Commercials saying in Theaters Nov 25th. I keep seeing trailers at theaters! WHY THE HELL do you spend the money to try to get people to see your film but not make it accessible?!!!

ITS COMPLETE MISMANAGEMENT!! Someone should be fired!!!

I read an article that this is secretly a religious movie, and they're deliberately hiding that in the marketing?

Do you have a link to the article? I'm curious why they think they are deliberately hiding it; it's not a huge part of the movie. There are some religious undertones/subtexts that both the book and movie contain, but neither are overtly religious. The conversation between The Old Man and The Man has some Christian-type ideas in there but I think you would get out of it what you bring to it.

Found it here, looks like I misremembered:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20319477,00.html

It looks like they had screenings at churches and such, but the trailers for this make it look more Mad Max than Passion of the Christ to me.

Re: 'The Road' - Nov. 2008

Saw this today at the only theater in the Phoenix area showing it.

Great movie and a wonderful performance by Viggo. Truly bleak shit in this movie.

Pretty full theater at the 4:40pm showing.

Saw it... thought it was just okay. It adapted the novel a little too literally.

Why is "too literally" a problem? The book is brilliant.

More often than not, what works in the written word doesn't work as well on the screen. It's a valid criticism. I wonder how much they could have damaged the film, however, since the book already reads like stage direction...

Maybe it's because i'm such a fan of the book, but I loved this film. Easily one of my favorites of the year. It was everything I thought it would be.

Same here.

I went to a 9:50pm showing and there were maybe 10 empty seats. Good job OKC*.

*Although I did hear this conversation afterwards:
Spoiler:
MALE EMPLOYEE: So it wasn't any good?
FEMALE EMPLOYEE: No, the dad died at the end.

Thank you OKC for reminding me that you are all morons.

The prose does not translate well to screen.

Spoiler:
There were also aspects of the book that I felt wouldn't translate well to screen. For example, it's never explicitly said in the book that the boy is his son. The ending also hints at this - that the boy is simply his ward. His "wife" isn't also necessarily the woman. There were many ambiguities in the book that can't be conveyed in a movie, and the book was much stronger for that.

Keeping the movie true to the events of the book seemed like the focus here, not necessarily conveying the same themes. The uplifting feeling that the book gives at times seems sidelined here.

I've never seen anything, or heard anyone discuss, before that there was any question or ambiguity that it was his son.

Spoiler:
From the first line in the book's dust jacket: "A father and son walk alone..."

The emotional heft of the book would be severely compromised if the boy was anything but the man's child.

And from McCarthy's interview on the Oprah Winfrey show:

"McCarthy replies, 'Usually you don’t know where a book comes from,' but then explains that he and his eight-year-old son John (to whom the book is dedicated) were staying in a hotel in El Paso. 'I went and stood at a window, and I could hear the trains coming through, a very lonesome sound.' He said he had a vision of what the place would be like in fifty years, with an image of fires burning on a hill.

Oprah asks, as she must, 'Is this a love story to your son?'

McCarthy looks uncomfortable. 'In a way,' he says, 'I suppose so. It’s embarrassing.'

'I just saw you blush,' Oprah says."

The Coens did the same w/ No Country, as during most of the book, they took it line for line, scene for scene from the book with a few exceptions

Yeah, but they were skillful in their direction. The tone of the movie perfectly matched the book. In this movie, it did the story a disservice to adapt the book in a more straightforward fashion.

It's just a feeling I got from the book. And the ending sort of reinforced it.

Re: 'The Road' - Nov. 2008

I caught it today and I liked it. I'm a fan of the book - wrote part of my English MFA dissertation on it - and thought it was both faithful and well-directed. I knew John Hillcoat would be a good fit - The Proposition is basically a Cormac McCarthy movie. One thing I can see being an issue:

Spoiler:
Because there's no discernible storyline, like a standard three-act structure or whatever, it's hard to know where the story is going and the ending comes abruptly. In a way this adds to the, "Wow, this could just go on and on and this place is awful!" sensibility to the landscape. On the other hand, it feels more like a series of events than a story. A well-made story, still.
