Just got tickets for an IMAX showing on the 18th. Hope it lives up to the 9 month anticipation that started when I saw Alice in Wonderland on its opening weekend.

I know we've probably answered this somewhere in all fifteen pages of this topic but is IMDB's listing of the aspect ratios correct (me thinks not)

Aspect ratio
1.44 : 1 (IMAX 3-D version)
1.85 : 1 (3-D version)
2.35 : 1

I thought the IMAX presentation was a combination of 2.35 and 1.78

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Giles, you are correct. It's 2.35:1 and then 1.7:1 for certain sequences.

http://www.slashfilm.com/exclusive-t...max-sequences/

1.7:1 is unusual; 1.78:1 is the native aspect ratio of the 3D cameras used, and most multiplex IMAX screens are closer to 2:1.

After pre-ordering the domestic version a couple of weeks ago, I was very disappointed to learn that Amazon.uk has a two-disc special edition version of the soundtrack. Also, I believe the Amazon MP3 version offers two additional tracks not available on the standard one-disc domestic CD release. I really am getting tired of having to do so much research to buy one friggin' album and get the 'right' version.

Based on the track listings, it looks like Amazon has 1 additional track called Sea of Simulation. The Amazon UK edition has an additional disc with 5 songs: Encom, Encom II, Round One, Castor, and Reflections. The Amazon one is mp3 only while the UK one does not seem to be for sale, other than through 3rd parties who are asking for redculous prices. That sucks they're doing it this way.

and IMAX-Digital screens are 1.78, so it's odd that a 1.7:1 aspect ratio was decided upon.

hmm, now where to see this here in the District - at the Uptown's 70 foot curved screen (with it's new digital projector system), or over at Tysons' IMAX (digital) screen or Cinemark's XD/Gallery Place's DP screens which will be in discrete 7.1 surround sound .... oh the choices here

or just wait for the bluray (yeah, right) and get the 3D, the shifting aspect ratios AND the 7.1 sound all in one package.

Interesting how this went from being about Tron to another debate on IMAX/Liemax/Regular screen ratios.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Actually, the IMAX ratio discussion is very relevant when it comes to Tron. In watching the sneak, I noticed during the scenes that I assume were shot for the IMAX format, there were bars at the top and bottom which I thought was pretty strange. I didn't expect to see them since they had made such a big hoopla at the fact that this was for IMAX 3D. I'm guessing the decision on not doing it at 1.78 was maybe due to the 3D format. I dunno, but it is something to think about for those watching this in IMAX 3D.

Giles 12-09-10 01:56 PM

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

but for the film to be mixed in discrete 7.1 surround sound, something that is NOT configured/replicated in the IMAX theatre also makes it hard to 'experience' the definitive visual-aural version of the movie.

and of course you could see this in plain old 2.35, 35mm, non-3D, but what a waste ;)

I wasn't really planning on looking all around the screen to observe technical flaws in framing issues, unless the movie is just REALLY boring.

I seem to remember Avatar taking up the full IMAX screen when I saw it in the format a year ago.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Avatar actually took up less space than most DMR movies, because it was letterboxed AND windowboxed (unless you saw it in digital). I had a customer tell me he swore up and down that when he first saw Avatar at my theater, it filled the screen, but when he saw the re-release, it didn't. I told him he was crazy, because it was actually the same print, just with the new footage added in.

It was noticable to me since I saw The Dark Knight on that same screen and remembered how that looked, especially the entire Joker chase sequence. Nothing I had seen detracted me from the experience itself, it's just something I've always done since I was a projectionist for about 10 years. Kind of hard to not notice stuff like that.

iTunes also has 2 exclusive tracks. So if you want everything, you have to get the UK special edition, the Amazon exclusive and the two iTunes exclusives. The good thing is that you can download the Amazon and iTunes ones without having to buy the whole album. The bad thing is that their sound quality is not as good as the CD. You can also purchase the UK SE though HMV's website.

Giles 12-10-10 08:58 AM

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

how did the UK 'Special Edition' become the 'extremely limited edition', HMV has far worse and higher postage and handling rates than Amazon.co.uk's - has anyone heard the extra songs? how are they?

E Unit 12-10-10 10:10 AM

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

To make things more confusing, Amazon apparently just updated their exclusive content. Instead of just one additional song, they now seem to have 47 tracks, but half are the regular soundtrack, so the "exclusive" part is not really correct.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...egacy&x=4&y=21

In looking at the tracks, several seem to be repeats, so maybe it's just a glitch in how they listed it.

Eric D. 12-10-10 02:55 PM

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

^ That just seems like a mistake since every track is repeated a few times. I don't see any new content there. I'm guessing they have multiple listings for the score and accidently merged some of them together.

Also, it appears that you can also get the UK SE through Play.com. I've never ordered from them before so I don't know if they are reliable.

You're right, I just checked and they don't ship to the US.

For those of us who attended the panel at Comic-Con last summer, I've heard that there is indeed a Hall H crowd credit in the movie. Yay for us! Disc Wars!!

For some reason, there are two separate releases: one has a digital booklet, and one doesn't. The track listings are similar.

http://www.amazon.com/Tron-Legacy-Am...40075&sr=301-2

In as far as that listing, that's pretty normal if you make a search for something. It arranges multiple releases by the sales of single songs - here's another example of how that works: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...f+clay&x=0&y=0

Oh snap, I didn't even think to check for that in the credits. I'll have to do that next week at the midnight show.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

While I am stoked for this, I wonder if this movie has any appeal beyond the geek/nerd crowd? I remember last year with Avatar there was interest all around once early reviews and word got out. While the reviews have been positive, it seems like this movie is playing for a niche audience that will lead it to a big opening but pitter out quickly. I see this movie getting a lot of single guys, while How Do You Know draws couples.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

I've been saying for a while that I think this is yet another "big fish in a small pond" type of film, where comic con attendees are jizzing themselves over it, but is otherwise met with a collective shrug.
