re: Scream 4 (Craven, 2011) - script by Williamson

Very fun horror/comedy flick.

Loved the opening sequence which featured a bonanza of young female stars:

Spoiler:
Shenae Grimes (90210)
Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars)
Anna Paquin (True Blood)
Kristen Bell
Britt Robertson (Life Unexpected)
Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights)

I enjoyed the 1st 2 sequences were part of Stab 6 and 7 and then Robertson/Teegarden's sequence was in the actual movie.

With alot of studios obsessed with re-boots, re-makes etc, I'm glad that Dimension actually did a real sequel to this franchise and for me everything worked as far as the character updates. It had alot of humor and suspense and didn't take itself too seriously. It was good to see Williamson write the script for this.

As far as the reveal who the killer is:

Spoiler:
Sid's cousin didn't really make sense to me. But, after thinking about it, I think the character was just a sad, twisted and attention-deprived girl who was jealous of her "star" cousin. She even said that she didn't care about her friends and wanted fame like Sidney.

BTW, I don't know if it's still airing or not, but you guys should really check out the 2 hour Behind Scream documentary that aired on the Biography channel recently. Really good documentary about how the original movie got developed and made and it has new interviews with alot of the original film's cast members including Wes Craven.

Really wish I could see that, but no bio channel for me. Sucks that the other doc didn't make it out in time for the theatrical release of Scream 4.

I thought if they really wanted to comment on the current state of horror then they would've went with the torture porn trend. Remakes? Meh.

In Scream, Rose McGowan throws a beer bottle across the room, hitting the killer in the face, causing the bottle to shatter on his face. Then a mere 90 seconds later, both Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich are walking around with squeaky clean, bruise free faces.

And boy did he feel it, but the mask softened the blow. It wasn't nearly as bad as it looked.

Kevin Williamson scripted a better scene than Ehren Kruger?

Surely, you jest!

Decent flick, but you can tell it suffered from numerous scenes being cut. An extended cut would flesh out the new characters better.

I don't understand why Gale made a big deal of telling the cops the killer was filming the murders after she was attacked in the barn. They didn't even mention that issue after that...

I guess it was to show that all the killings were probably being filmed? At first I thought it was lazy writing but now I think they put too much focus on it thinking it would pay off in revealing who the killer is... instead

Yes, a real spoiler:
Spoiler:
at the end the killer reveals that the killers have been filming the killings with the small camera tucked inside the mask. So I think it went into that.

I don't remember that LOL.
Spoiler:
Why were the killers filming the murders anyway?

Wes Craven was behind the re-writes of the opening and the parking garage.

Well, the one killer, Charlie, was. Jill was more obsessed with being famous (by being the sole survivor). She was going to use the footage to place the blame on Charlie and her ex.

I read the reshoots came very late in post-production, so they definitely weren't part of Kruger's rewrites during principal photography. In fact, Marnie's "You're not real." line made it into most of the TV ads. Apparently, Wes wanted more suspense after the test audience didn't have much of a reaction to Marnie/Jenny stuff.

But we didn't really care about Jenny anyway, so watching her run around and stumble through a wing of the house that was under construction seemed pointless. The shorter version sounds better, but it's hard to judge without seeing it. Hopefully all that stuff makes the blu-ray. The aftermath scene looked pretty brutal.

Thanks to Gizmo for the link to that Scream site... cool stuff.

I'm surprised people really like this movie. It was horrible to me. Almost painful to sit through in all honesty (boy was the dialogue bad!). I liked the other Scream movies when they came out, but to be fair, I probably haven't seen one since Scream 3 was in theaters. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but it was something better than what I actually got.

There wasn't much to like other than the reunion between the three surviving characters of the first movie. The rest were pretty much all interchangeable and you sure didn't get a chance to get to know the new characters. And what was Mary McDonnel doing in this?? I am guessing this is the role that Lauren Graham was suppose to play at one point? What a waste as were all the other cameos at the beginning.
The rationale
Spoiler:
from Sydney's cousin about why she was killing was absurd and very cliched; as was the whole scene in the hospital when they yell " Clear" gets zapped and then....
Gets up again??!

How much of Kevin Williamson's script survived? His writing on Vampire Diaries is far better there.

re: Scream 4 (Craven, 2011) - script by Williamson

From Dark Horizons: "So much for a second trilogy. The hope of "Scream 4" was that it would launch a new series of films. Decidedly mixed reviews and poor box-office however may have nixed those plans.

Moviehole spoke with a contact at Dimension Films who says "The 'Scream' franchise will likely end here, at least for the moment" and plans for a so-called trilogy "stops here". However, they did add that the film series may have future as a direct-to-DVD franchise ala "American Pie".

With a production budget at $40 million, "Scream 4" opened with $18.7 million, almost half that of its two immediate predecessors. Its second weekend wasn't much help either, the film plummeting by 62.4% despite little to no competition. International grosses are also proving somewhat lacklustre."

I'm honestly surprised it took them this long to get to this idea, considering how the Weinsteins have milked some of their other franchises in straight-to-DVD territory in the past. Of course, I've seen enough of these direct-to-DVD films to know that a hacky attempt to write something 'meta' could be absolutely awful in the wrong hands. I think I'd prefer a paint-by-numbers, straightforward Ghostface slasher film over that.

re: Scream 4 (Craven, 2011) - script by Williamson

Watched this for a second time last night. Honestly, I was a little disappointed at first. I'm a big fan of the first three. Yes, I even liked the third one. Just something seemed off about this sequel.

The second time I really payed attention to the dialog. Thought more about the actions of the killers (on the phone and who and how they killed everyone) and really followed their motives. I think it clicked and made perfect sense. The writing was very deliberate and on the surface it was like the movie was making fun of itself. Which at first kind of takes you by surprise because you want it to be more serious. When you get over that it becomes a really fun movie and far smarter then most give it credit for. Maybe I'm alone in this but I think this Scream is almost as good as the original. I hope that we get another true sequel but if it doesn't happen I'll be happy with what we got.

I know it's debatable but has Kevin Williamson made anything good since Scream 2? Maybe The Faculty which was fun but nothing that makes me yell about his script being changed. I don't know what was changed and what he is credited for in this movie but I doubt anything great was taken out. I think he is very overrated.

$67 million worldwide so far, with numerous foreign territories left to open up in. With the box office, plus the the cable, rental, DVD/BD sales, this movie is seeing some profit. The Weinsteins need to just get Scream 5 into production as soon as possible. It's not going to do any worse than Scream 4; and at the very worst, it will break even. There's more money to be had in theatrical movies, than DTV.
