I know I'm in the minority here but I didn't like the flick at all. The new concept Camaro was the best part for me (I'm a Camaro nut) so I was drooling over that the whole time. I thought the cheesy lines were bad and any serious lines weren't delivered very well. I know it's just a pop-corn summer flick but the stupidity of the high school kids and absurdity of the kids family and the girls background were so unbelievable that it took me out of the movie. The Transformers looked cool, but they were so detailed that you couldn't get a great full on view of them because of the quickness of the scenes. The military dudes out in the desert were bad and having the hot blonde chick figure out the secret codes, etc. was pretty silly.

Oh and let me throw in the obligatory 'I don't know much about transformers before seeing the movie' in there as well.

Hey! You can't expect good writing or a plot that makes sense from a big-budget action movie

Mopower 07-16-07 02:11 PM

I think all the people that say the movie was dumb or didn't live up to the cartoon really need to go back and watch the cartoon. What a shit fest. Sure it was great when I was 8 years old. Now it blows. Gotta be the shittest animation and acting I've ever seen.

Truth.

GCS 07-16-07 02:20 PM

I said it once and I'll say it again. I would have been happier if the movie had NO HUMAN characters. For me it was all about the Transformers.

I do agree it was tough to really take them in with the standard quick cuts etc etc but overall they really wow'ed me and put the movie up there for me.

Sure I thought for the most part all the human actors "phoned it in" (in particular Voigt and Turturro). Fox and Lebouf did pretty good and I can't complain too much about them but his parents were TERRIBLE. The Dad is a decent actor who has lots of talent but he was annoying in this movie.

That being said I still loved the movie. I was there for the robots and that's what I got. I just want more of them in the next movie.

And yes I thought the whole hiding/sneaking around the house bit was stupid but hey I got over it.

Agreed. I sold my Season 1 DVD set a number of years ago because I couldn't bring myself to sit through an entire episode.

However, the quality of the 80s cartoon should have absolutely no bearing on the quality of the movie. My problems weren't with the Transformers as characters or the mythology in general, but with easily fixable production issues.

If they could fly in the beginning, it was most likely one of the many animation or continuity errors in the original cartoon. By the end of the miniseries, the only one that could fly was Sideswipe, who loaned his jetpack to Optimus so he could go after the shuttle.

In the original cartoon, i seem to remember Optimus holding his own against Megatron every single time... sure, the autobots were basically pacifists, but Prime was basically reengineered to fight.

Bay using GMC vehicles (including the Camaro) for his movie doesn't mean that he was allowed to use the Beetle and passed on it. Bumblebee hasn't been a beetle in years (even the recent classics toy was a "fake" beetle), and it's always been said that German VW doesn't want their cars associated with anything warlike.

Which is STILL hysterical since the company was started by Adolf Hitler.

That's the point, Doc. They don't want to be associated with nazism, war or anything along those lines; they just simply want to make the "people's car".

Hey, I sat through the movie...haven't I suffered enough? ;)

atari2600 07-16-07 05:50 PM

this movie kicked ass! loved the special effects and optimus primes voice was dead on!

also loved the comedy they through in there (prime saying "my bad" - )

my only complaint was that they didnt develop the story enough and there wasnt enough interaction between the transformers. at the end it picked up while they were fighting but i wanted them to talk more so we got more into their characters. but the action scenes were fucking awesome!! as a childhood transformers fanatic i was very pleased (i got goosebumps when the autobots were first introduced in the alleyway).

one question; why did megatron die when the cube touched him? i thought he wanted the cube?

It touched his own spark which i guess you're not supposed to do if you're a transformer (like explosions caused by matter / antimatter interaction).

TimeandTide 07-16-07 06:51 PM

Saw it this weekend with my 4-year old. We both enjoyed it, although I was more entertained by Bay's Rock and Armageddon.

Transformers would have been MUCH better, IMO, had they gone the Wargames route and kept the human involvement to a minimum, say with Shia, his love interest, and Voight. The story could have been told through those three characters (although at the expense of some of the film's humor--which I enjoyed--from Anthony Anderson, Turturro and the parents). This would have freed up a ton of time for more interaction between the Transformers (TMNT's best bits featured the turtles interacting...a shame we got so little of the robots interacting), and action/fights vs. the Decepticons.

B- for me.

fujishig 07-16-07 07:07 PM

Considering they didn't even bother to animate the supposed "missing" fight between Optimus and Barricade, I'm pretty sure they needed the human interaction to fill out the film and limit the amount of CGI scenes they could put in. Could you imagine how much a movie made entirely of robots would cost?

The movie ran 2 hours and 22 minutes. They could have cut plenty.

a little like closing the barn door after the horse has left the stable, no?

Quick, get behind me! I'll get you out of here alive, but you'll have to listen very carefully and do exactly like I say! Don't look them in the eye! They only want to you hurt you!

Which is why they get a pass. I understand the financial restraints, and I got more than I expected this time. But the bar is set high for the next one.

Could you imagine the sheer terror and pure evil of a Decepticon Domo-kun? I shutter to think.

After three viewings, still my favorite scene.

CPA-ESQ. 07-17-07 09:56 AM

I watched it last night and loved it! My GF who was did not watch the Transformers catoon also loved it.

Loved the humor in the movie - the kid had a Peter Parker vibe to him, quick wit, dork, but confident.

Loved the well lighted action - most movies have the CGI fights in the dark, or alley ways so they can save $ on CGI (see spiderman 3)

The human interaction was kept to a minimum and not one saved the day... Thank goodness we didn't have a Jeff Goldblum charachter running around every agency explaining that he had a "virus" that could stop the invaders, nor did we have that Government ass hat that would stop people from saving the day.

We had 4 sub-plots and they touched on them quickly, tied them together and wraped it up. 1) soldiers 2) Computer Analyst 3) Sector 7 4) teenagers

The movie had some great nods to the Transformers fans, good pacing mixed with humor, Bad Ass vilians etc.

It was longer, but it worked - the length is great for home viewing.

umm... high school [gorgeous]hacker/super genius analysts running to another high school hackers/super genius who is the only one who can crack the code but is instead just your typical fat guy-providing comic relief nonsense? A fat guy... eating a tray of donuts! Ha Ha... that's fucking genius.

Was John Tuturro not in the cut you saw?

Again, really? This movie was all about the humans. You had that lame Decepticon on Air Force one, but Bumblebee showed up about 30 minutes in. along with the cop car chase scene. Then the other Autobots showed up and hung out in Sam's yard. Then the Decepticons didn't surface until about 30 minutes to go for the final battle. That was about it.

Didn't Sam put the All Spark into Megatron's chest? He was human, right?

The voice was dead-on because it was Peter Cullen, the same guy who did the voice in the original cartoon.

I also liked the humor in the movie. Frenzy had my dad laughing throughout the movie when I saw it a second time with him.

Agreed. Less fleshlings, more 'bots!

Didn't Sam put the All Spark into Megatron's chest? He was human, right?

It makes me wonder if he saw the same movie.

Actually they do, I am just watching it again now in you tube Transformers Episode 2... They did fly...

Quack 07-17-07 09:21 PM

Saw it earlier today and I really enjoyed it, loved hearing Cullen right in the beginning, got goosebumps from that along with the first Transformers transformation....awesome. Story was pretty good, like how it's left open for a sequel, was hoping to see more screen time of Devastator and see how well he looked compared to the old stuff. Now I have to finish watching my G1 stuff and I'll be all set!

Saw it today for a work event. I liked it, but didn't love it. I enjoyed The Rock more.

I thought the humor was hit or miss... some I liked, but I didn't like Optimus saying "my bad" or the hiding hyjinks during that scene. It was a bit too silly for my tastes.

I wish they cut out the whole hacker thing, as I felt it was a waste of time; especially Anthony Anderson. Easily time that should have been spent on showing the actual Transformers, particularly introducing the other Decepticons.

In fact, overall I think there should have been far more interaction between the Transformers and less with the humans outside of Sam. I wished we saw more talking between the Autobots and got to know them better. I know everyone hated to see Jazz die, but quite frankly it didn't feel like he did much at all so it didn't matter that much to me. It would have also been better to see some personality come out of the Decepticons rather then stupid subtitles and one liners.

Still, the action was great and the effects are amazing. Not once did I feel an effect stood out as obvious CGI, which seems to be a rarity these days.

I noticed the product placement, but it didn't hurt my enjoyment. I actually thought it was cool the hear the 360 sound as it got "infected."
