The only thing I hope for the sequel, is some shots of the robots fighting from a distance. When the choppers first see Scorpinok, or the long shot down the city street at the end, seeing the whole scope of the battle was amazing.

Any time there was a transformation that took place while the vehicle was moving, I was fascinated. Starscream's multiple transformations at the end got me all sorts of excited.

The only two things that drug the movie down a bit for me, were Sector 7/Hackers and the bit whlie looking for the glasses. Both of those things, if shortened, would have been fine.

I look forward to the sequel, as this was a blast to see. Every person that I know of that's seen it has loved it, for whatever that may mean.

Mercury&Solace 07-15-07 01:48 AM

I absolutely LOVED this movie! Great summer action and right up there with Live Free Or Die Hard. Great action, great characters, Megan Fox  It was hard watching this movie with a boner through the whole thing thinking about Fox, but hey what can I say.

alfredog1976 07-15-07 03:05 AM

Roeper gave this thumbs up this week (I didn't think he would)...

jiggawhat 07-15-07 03:12 AM

This is how I see the sequel playing out (some spoilers below):

The part where Optimus grabs a piece of the Cube from Megatron's chest will be one of the focal points. The Decepticons will try and recover that piece to bring Megatron back to life somehow.

The base from the cartoon will be already down below in the sea where they deposited the bodies of the Decepticons. This will trigger some sort of beacon in the base letting them know that the bodies are nearby.

Somehow, the piece of the cube is recovered and Megatron is brought back to life. They'll then figure out that they don't need the cube anymore and now will figure out how to create "Energon" and will try to takeover the planet.

SPOILER.............................................................................................

Anybody that watched the the original cartoon knows that Megatron isn't dead. If he was dead they would have taken him out to the desert or something and nuked his ass. Instead they dropped him into the ocean for some reason. Go back and watch the first couple episodes of the original Transformers cartoons and watch what happens to Megatron. For those that don't know, he, along with some other Decepticons, end up at the bottom of the ocean, but lo and behold they aren't dead and proceed to come back time and time again and reek havok upon the Earthlings and the Autobots. Plus after the movie ends we see Starscream flying off, so he obviosuly isn't dead either. Finally, Prime ends the movie by "asking" all other Autobots that may be out there to come to Earth and join him. If that doesn't mean they're planning on another movie with new Autobots that have recently heard Prime's call and come to Earth then I don't know what does.

Ya I remember that.... When I saw them dropping Megatron to the ocean I knew it looked familiar...

If you guys saw the first cartoon episode of transformers you can see that ALL the autobots were able to fly. But later they couldnt anymore...

B.A. 07-15-07 05:19 AM

I finally might go see this today, since Potter came out and the crowds should be a bit thinner.

I've heard nothing but good things from the few people I know who have seen it. "It kicks ass."

No they couldnt. At the end of the episode Prime had to wear a jetpack to fly and catch up with the decepticon ship. He then got shot down by the decepticons and fell to Earth.

got over to see transformers last night. going in i knew a little, but not being a transformer fan growing up, i didn't know all the plot lines.

all and all, i thought it was a great movie. great action and effects as expected. some funny unexpected lines too. and megan fox was good looking. really a great summer action movie, IMO and will definitely pick it up on dvd.

Which reminds me once again that Prime was always getting his ass handed to him in the different series over the years. This is why the fight with Megatron in the movie didn't bother me as much as others here.

Mr. Cinema 07-15-07 12:07 PM

Transformers took in another $36 million this weekend, putting its US total at $222 million in only 13 days of release!

I suppose people that didn't know anything about Transformers expected Prime to some great military leader that would kick Megatron's ass.

They don't know that the Autobots were never warriors and the Decepticons were superior in just about every way when it came to violence, destruction and military power. Every battle between Autobots and Decepticons was really a David vs Goliath thing. And you're right...Prime always got the crap beat out of him.

Go back and watch it again. They could fly, Prime included. As for why he needed the jet back at the end - maybe it was he needed the extra speed to try and catch them.

So it today and all I can say is bring on the sequel!

Great summer flick.

I really did enjoy this film. My one complaint is that I wanted MORE, MORE, MORE robot action. Whenever the transformers were on screen I was jacked up, the human element slowed it down.

Hearing the voice of Optimus Prime totally set my hair on end. It was awesome that they had the original voice.

The special effects were really the best I have ever seen.

All the product placement didn't bother me one bit.

It's not a 5 out of 5 since there were many flaws but its close. I give it a 6 out of 5 for pure fun but a 4 out of 5 for the movie as a whole. Well worth my $7 and I will be happy to have it on DVD when its release (but I can feel the future double dip coming).

Movie quote?

Can someone please tell me Sam's mom's line (spoilerized just in case)
Spoiler:
after Mikaela stands up from hiding in Sam's room? There was a big laugh from the audience and I missed it. It was the line before she apologizes for Mikaela hearing their family discussion.

It was pretty much just a weird laugh that the Mom gave while grabbing Sam, like she was proud of him. I actually thought that was one of the funniest things in the whole movie.

The Mom also tells Mikaela how gorgeous she is, but I'm not sure if that was before or after the part you missed.

B.A. 07-15-07 10:12 PM

What a pleasant, fun surprise. **** out of five.

I liked the cast for the most part. The Transformers looked great. Prime sounded excellent. The effects were good for the most part. Highly enjoyable action scenes, etc.

My one complaint - Bay needs to ditch the slow-mo and the soundtrack that seems to bog down every film of his. It seems like it's the same damn thing every time. "Cue the slow-mo and my favorite score!"

Actually, I think that was it. I thought it was "You're georgeous," but I wasn't positive.

I guess I'm now officially out of touch with what moviegoers want in a film these days, because I thought TRANSFORMERS was a horrible film. Not just bad, or cheesy in a fun way, but downright awful. And it's not even a Michael Bay thing...I enjoyed Armageddon, The Rock and even (to some degree) Pearl Harbor. Heck, I even liked bits of The Island.

But here we have no story, horrible acting (had a hard time deciding who was more monotone...the humans or the robots), and about the only thing I can say good about the film is that the effects were well done (but if I'm not vested in the characters as a viewer, who cares?).

I will give props to one actor though: Anthony Anderson was quite good. Had the movie revolved around his character, I might have been more interested as a viewer.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I personally think TRANFORMERS ranks right up there with THE HULK, WILD WILD WEST, GODZILLA and WATERWORLD as one of the biggest "summer" disappointments of recent years. Then again, I know there are tons of people who like those movies too...but I've always felt chararacterzation comes FIRST, and we don't get an ounce of that in TRANFORMERS.

So you would rather have the movie center around the character that most people hated? Interesting. Anthony Anderson was funny but he played the same character he has played in every movie he has ever been in.

I was commenting more on his acting...taking what he was given and giving some "life" to it. Everyone else (especially people like Voight and Turturro) looked like they were there to collect a paycheck. But that's not the actors fault...that's Bay's fault for not getting performances out of them. The point I'm trying to make is that I wanted to see a movie with SOMEONE interesting to latch onto. TRANFORMERS is full of cardboard cut-out characters in a carboard cut-out story, with the director trying to distract the audience of this fact by blowing something up every 60 seconds.

I'm a huge G1 fan. I own both versions of the '86 movie on DVD. Prior to that I had all 3 of the video versions released in the late '90s, ealry '00s. Before THAT, I found an old copy (when it was out of print) at a mom and pop video rental store in Ocean City, New Jersey and asked, bribed, threatened to steal, and finally was able to buy said copy.

I still have my G1 Prime, Soundwave, Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Metroplex, Omega Supreme, Megatron, Galvatron, AND YES - Bumblebee - along with their original packaging.

I even just bought the new Vector line of posable (G1) Megatron and (G1) Optimus imported from Japan which are right now staring me in the face, proudly perched on my computer at work.

...(prepares to be immolated)...

I actually prefer the movie's bumblebee....

I never related to the G1 bumblebee... he was more helpless comic relief, regardless of his "master of stealth" status. I know he was Spike's ride and was probably the most "human" of the Autobots, but I dunno... he just always came off as kind of a useless pussy :helpme:.

Call him "holywood", Bay-ized, or even worse, PRODUCT PLACEMENT, but I just loved Bumblebee in this. Gods help me, I even loved the whole voice-damaged-in-battle, talking-through-the-radio thing.

He was innocent and funny, Sensitive and caring, and yet totally badass when called upon to act. Call me a sell-out or tell me I've bought into the hype, whatever. I really prefer the 2007, Camaro-version, beefed-up Bumblebee to the little VW bug that kept getting his ass kicked, or whining about this or that to Prime.

....be gentle.

While I agree with you, virtually no one is fleshed-out in this thing. I was relating to Sam, Bumblebee and Prime as well as any other movie's characters for whom I felt. Maybe it's the nostalgia thing, I don't know, but I thought Shia knocked it out of the park, the ILM guys gave Bumblebee pathos and character, and Optimus... well I already feel like Peter Cullen's Prime is my second father, so that one could definitely be nostalgia.

VW did reject allowing the use of the VW beetle for some of the later models of the Bumblebee toys. How this might affect his use in a movie, I don't know.

Megan Fox is all kinds of hot in this flick. Good action, but overall I think it was alright.
