Now maybe those 150 critics fully represent the rest of the country, but right now it does not seem like that. We will find out next weekend.

I'm really not all that surprised about the huge numbers on POTC. This was the most talked about movie for the past 2 weeks. Most of the people I know have made plans to go see it this weekend or next weekend regardles of age or sex. I even know one person on my clinical rotation who brought in pirate gear for the staff to wear.

$132m for Pirates, according to Yahoo! Movies...
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" set a new record for the highest opening in box office history on Sunday, smashing the four-year-old record held by "Spider-Man," said distributor Walt Disney Co.
The widely hyped family adventure sequel, marking the return of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, sold an estimated $132 million worth of tickets in its first three days of release across North America, easily surpassing industry expectations of an opening in the $100 million range.

Assuming the projections hold, POTC 2 has the #1 and #5 highest single day grosses ever. It also becomes the fastest to $100 million in only 2 days. Its 2 day total is $100.2 million, so that Saturday number may be overestimated. But still, that's incredible.
Superman took a bigger dip, but it still did well in my eyes. POTC 2 was after the exact same audience and it broke 3 different records this weekend, so SR's $21 million is still a decent hold.

I still believe Spider-Man 3 will break this 3-day record. It's opening is May 4 on a Friday and I gotta think the hype for it will be higher than for POTC2. Especially with what parts 1 and 2 grossed during their runs.
If it doesn't break $132 million, then that record might hang around for awhile.

Glad to hear it. Well deserved in my opinion. Great summer flick. I myself would definitley see it again, and I think many others may the same. Won't be Titanic huge... but I could see it hitting at least 300mil... probably 400.

No way does Spiderman 3 break the record. I think the Spidey hype has kind of worn down, not to mention there were people(not me, I thought the 2nd was better than the first) who didn't like Spiderman 2.

Spidey 3 has a few things going for it. That teaser has people buzzing about the movie. It kicks off the Summer season next year. It'll be bigger than the previous 2. And it'll have been 3 years since he's been on the big screen, which could help the buildup.
The first 2 has been hugely successful. And you know Sony will try their hardest to get their record back.

So much for Aquaman's record.
Another thing that Spiderman 3 has going against it breaking the new Pirates record is how many 3rd films in a franchise have made more money than the previous 2? I'm sure not many.
