dear lord. i though that POTC number had to be a typo. it wasn't.

deadlax 07-08-06 11:44 AM

Fairly safe to say Pirates was the choice over Superman Returns. Not a ridiculously high drop for Supeman, but its going to make more than $210M difficult.

gotrice487 07-08-06 11:46 AM

Wow, that is a ridiculous number for POTC. Someone here predicted it though, I forget who it was

deadlax 07-08-06 11:48 AM

The per screen average for PotC is the craziest part. 450 more screens than Sith, basically the same average. And with all the kids interested in PotC, this movie should do just as well today. Could be close to $150M weekend.

Mr. Cinema 07-08-06 11:53 AM

uh.....whoa.

I didn't think a sequel to a movie based on a theme park ride would ever beat the last Star Wars movie on the big screen's single day record.

Spider-Man's 4 year, 3-day record of $114 million is going to end this weekend.

But I won't be surprised if Spider-Man 3 beats POTC2's record next year.

deadlax 07-08-06 11:57 AM

Theater here has 28 screenings during the day, including one at 1:45am. That must suck for the teenage employees.

Mr. Cinema 07-08-06 12:00 PM

Looks like Superman will do almost $25 million. I mean, when the new opening movie makes $55 million in one day and breaks all other records, you can't expect Superman to do much better. Warners should be happy that it didn't get completely crushed. I think it will reach over $200 million US and do pretty well overseas. But clearly, this Summer will belong to Johnny Depp...

UKingdom 07-08-06 12:16 PM

55 million on friday; it's the biggest single day and opening day ever, a new record according to boxofficemojo.

sauce07 07-08-06 12:26 PM

Johnny Depp is now officially the biggest movie star in the world. Cheers

Jackskeleton 07-08-06 12:28 PM

woah. Now that is some impressive damn numbers. Simply amazing.

maingon 07-08-06 12:48 PM

Crazy numbers to think a film will make close to 150 million in one weekend is nuts, but glad its Pirates cause I LOVED the movie

Matthew Chmiel 07-08-06 01:00 PM

Other than the impressive numbers of Pirates, I'm also surprised by the legs that Click is having (especially considering it's a Sandler film which usually open big and drop hard).

TomOpus 07-08-06 01:03 PM

I think the Pirates overflow is helping other movies. You go to the movie and either it's sold out or there's a ginormous line for it.

"Hey, let's see another flick and we can catch Pirates tomorrow"

Or they said "Hey Pirates is sold out so lets buy a ticket for another movie and then go into Pirates. Then we can stand behind chrisih8u and talk thoughout the movie."

I think that logic only applies when a whole slew of Pirates showings are sold-out, not just one. This isn't the same world we lived in when The Phantom Menace came out where films weren't on more than three screens and films actually stayed in theaters for months. If the showing you wanted to go to for Pirates is sold out, people will wait 30 minutes for the next one. If the showings for the next 3-4 hours are sold-out; the person will either buy tickets for the showing in a few hours and come back, see another movie, or go home and try another day.

As I mentioned in the "Guess the gross..." thread, some theaters in Vegas were sold out of most of their evening showings by 6pm (mostly by people who use Fandango).

That sucks :(

Michael Ballack 07-08-06 01:46 PM

Yay!!! Looks like Captain Jack is going to squash Spidey's record. I liked Spiderman, but I was so sick of hearing about it when it broke the record.

Kocheese99 07-08-06 02:21 PM

Aren't saturday's usually bigger than Friday's? I thought i read that somewhere. If so, i can't imagine POTC doing more than $55 mill. on saturday, but if it does do more on Saturday it could have a shot at breaking the $114 Mill in only two days which is just insane.

Usually, but sequels are often front loaded, meaning stronger friday numbers. Though from the looks of it (both locally and nationally), PotC 2 should match it's Fridays numbers. (Every showing here has been sold out, never seen that happen before.)

Perkinsun Dzees 07-08-06 02:39 PM

Can't wait for POTC3. With Chow Yun Fat and Keith Richards added to the cast, it should be an even bigger blockbuster.

Normally, yes, because Friday afternoon screenings don't have as many teenagers in them, what with school and all. But during the summer, there's often no difference between Fridays and Saturdays. POTC2 will probably make about the same amount today as it did yesterday.

Dr_Evil 07-08-06 02:58 PM

Weren't there a bunch of midnight screenings on Friday that aren't going to be there on Saturday? I know my local theater had at least 3 post-midnight screenings on Friday and none on Satruday. I would think if anything Saturday will be smaller.

raven56706 07-08-06 03:01 PM

wow... let me eat my words.....$55 million.... thats incredible...
