Ew. Why this movie? I still am scratching my head as to why everyone and their grandma orgasmed over the first one (grrreat imagery)? I am rather sad that this is gonna beat Spidey.

Damn! I knew this was going to make a lot of money, considering I had NEVER seen a theater that packed in my life, but...WOW. Still, it is probably the last big blockbuster movie of summer (and the BEST). It deserves every single penny.

and this is the only movie that about half of the audience stayed for the end credits for the additional scene. (well dawn, but that was different, people imidediatly jumped out to get out, and realized it wasn't over, maybe the girl showing off helped, but many people stood in the istles.

But I won't be surprised if Spider-Man 3 beats POTC2's record next year.

I think you mean Aquaman's record

(Mind you, I went at a family friendly 7-ish time to see it).
To repeat what I said in the review thread, every single theatre around here was sold out between 5 and 9. That's roughly about 20-25 screens showing the movie.
Checking now, there's not as many sell-outs. Only about half as much. Looking through the Manhattan theatres on Fandango, only Union Square is sold out, but The Devil Wears Prada is sold out there as well. I think we'll see Spider-man's record fall, although not by much ($10MM or less).

Good to see Priates doing so well. Saw it at 10:45 last night with a sold out crowd and I loved it. Its the movie of the summer and is going to break more records. Hopefully the quality of the 3rd one is as good. Yar!

I understand the hype though, the first Pirates film appealed at least a little to everyone, it just managed to hit the perfect balance of family friendly, all age entertainment. I enjoyed #1 though agree, didn't quite get the love for it.
But it isn't all that surprising, of the 4 movies to break $100m, I disliked 3 of them (Spider-man, X3, and Shrek 2), was borderline on one (Revenge of the Sith, which I thought sucked up front but enjoyed a little more when it aired on HBO) and haven't seen one (HP4). Guess I just don't get the appeal of certain flicks (but did enjoy Spider-man 2, X1 & X2, Shrek, HP3)

I'm not surprised that it's making big money but I am surprised that it's making that big of money, 55 million in one day. Whoa!!!
The funny thing is the movie is a clunker, i liked pirates one a lot, the second pirates stinks. Superman i thought was good but flawed, pirates 2 is pure mediocre clunker, i love big movies and sequels but this movie is an example of hollywood at it's absolute worst, bigger, dumber, more expensive and less fun. I was not surprsied that the writers of legend of zorro wrote this movie. pirates 2 is interminably long and boring like zorro 2. Pirates 2 has some good parts and funny lines but for a movie with a lot of action and effects it's boring and dull and way to long. i can't believe people are taking their young children to this movie, i don't have kids so i am single guy idiot about these things, but this movie seemed way to scary for young kids, i wouldn't take my nieces and nephews to it for sure.
I'm shocked that anyone likes it. Every one has different tastes.

I don't think this film will make another $50 million today. I think it'll be in the $40 million range. Now, I also think this will definitely pass the original's $305 million take, but I still don't think it will get to Spidey's $403 million gross back in '02.
However, having the first 2 of this franchise to both crack the $300 million mark is very impressive and will only raise the expectations for part 3 when it comes out. Just think, next year, the analysts will be asking whether or not POTC 3 can break the $55 million opening day of part 2. That's insane.

I thought the original was overrated and really have no desire to see this, at least not until video. Hopefully Clerks 2 will beat the measly 55 million opening day! (ok I realize it doesnt stand a chance, but Clerks 2 is really the only movie I am highly anticipating this summer...besides Snakes on a Plane of course)

I was amazed to see all the lines of people waiting to get into their viewing of POTC2, rare to see that during the afternoon showings, but it seems like families showed up in force to check it out. And yes, too bad it's not that good a film deserving of such a great opening weekend.

Is it really that surprising how many people are going to see POTC? I'm sure a good chunk of them just want to wipe last week's mind numbing disappointment of Superman Returns from their brains by going to see an actually FUN movie.

Having seen all the hype and the enormous box office I had to see it for myself today, and I was a bit disappointed. The movie had its moments, but by and large I felt it was running on autopilot and wasn't that great. Maybe I was even tired, but I caught myself dozing off during the middle 3rd.
My favorite parts were the wheelbarrow fight and all the scenes with the natives. The movie did not need to be so long. A bit disappointed and didn't make me that eager to see the next chapter. The movie will open huge but will not have long legs, you'll see a massive dropoff and not alot of repeat business. I felt the same way about Superman. The 52% is entirely reflective of this; a lot of people like it, a lot of people don't. The curiosity and the hype and the draw of two big stars is what will make this movie open big.

WOW!
I didn't expect, I wouldn't have called it....just wow!
Friday's numbers do include all those sold out midnight shows which could account for up to $10 million or so. And with the massive front loading we're seeing this summer I really don't think it could match that number again...but a $40-45 day would not only be possible, but just as impressive.

Yeah, I mean, during summer folks just go to the movies. It should still have pretty decent legs. And word of mouth is pretty good on it so I see no reason why it wouldn't have good legs.

Wow. I didn't really like the first, I can't believe POTC 2 made so much money. I was shocked by the amount Shrek 2 made, it seems like sequels can really bring in money without being great movies.
I think some of this has to do with Orlando and Keira having a larger fan base than when POTC 1 was released. Bill Nighy deserves some credit, too.
Now I know why Blow was on HBO this week. Nice trick, movie studio.

Even if it drops 50% next weekend, that's still going to be about a $70 million number. Plus, there is very little competition with Little Man and You, Me and Depree. I don't think either one of them is going to steal any of POTC2's thunder.
However, on the 21st, Monster House and Lady in the Water open. They should both open well.
I think this one will get to between $350 - $375 million, which would put it in the Spider-Man 2 range.
