He was only counting superhero movies since Blade. Which is a smart move since it comes post-Summer 1997 which gave us the infamous Warner trifecta of Crapman & Robin, Spawn, and Steel that nearly killed the genre altogether.

BTW, do the movies have to be based on comic books? If not, Unbreakable should be included on that list.

There are movies a lot better than those mentioned on his list. Besides several of titles Iīve listed are after 1997. Where to draw the line is, of course, up to one self to judge.

Matt also only mentioned movies from the big two comic companies. Not saying his choice is right or wrong, but I believe that when average people (and I'm not saying Matt is one, I'm sure he knows all the comic films in recent years) compare superhero films, they compare movies from DC and Marvel.

Could we get back to the talking about Superman Returns and not ranking a whole slew of super-hero movies, save that for another thread.

Upon having a night to reflect, I think this movie is more of a *** 1/2 out of **** as opposed to the *** I gave it earlier. I was tired, and when you sit through a 2 1/2 hour movie that doesn't start until 10:00 PM, fatigue sets in and you start loathing the filmmaker for making it too long.

Again, the more I think about it the more I think the kid is appropriate, and I loved the fact that

Really liked it. A lot. I'm seeing it again today in IMAX, so I may love it by then. My initial complaints are just about overall length. I thought the setup moved a bit too slowly. Once Superman is back in Metropolis, I loved everything from there on out, but the first bit was too slow with almost too little exposition. Other than that, I enjoyed the hell out of it and thought the effects were great. Routh was perfect and I seriously can't picture anyone in the role other than him.

Some of it felt a bit like going through the motions, but then there would be a genuinely great moment (like Superman recharging from the sun's rays) and it would make up for any faults. I think the SEQUEL to this will be the movie I was actually hoping for, but I'm certainly not disappointed. I'm not sure if it was just the print I saw, but the cinematography did feel a little soft but it could just be the digital to film transfer. I'm sure the DVD will look stunning.

More comments after my second viewing...can't wait for IMAX (knowing that I'd be seeing it today in IMAX - there was no local imax show last night - kept me thinking "oh, that looks awesome...but tomorrow it will look more awesome." when watching the big FX scenes...

hopefully this will do some big numbers or on par with Batman. Didn't like it as much as BB, but the idea of a Superman sequel and an eventual Routh/Bale team up movie is too fucking good to pass up...this movie has to make some serious bank.

Yeah, I had hoped that the HD DVD release of SR would get me into the High-Def disc camp, and it will, this will probably be my killer app that drives the purchase for the hardware.

I was glad they didn't have to use the kid to "save" Superman (blood, DNA, etc), plus that would have needed another 20-30 minutes to verify the road to a cure.

3 gripes down to 2.

Saw the 10pm screening and loved it. It met my high expectations. The opening credits gave me chills like I'm sure it did for everyone else. It's just so great to see the Man of Steel on the big screen again. I loved the casting and the screenplay was solid. Some very good lines in the film and some good comedic relief from Lex and Kitty.

The best thing for me was Routh. I love the first 2 Supes movies with Reeves, but after seeing Brandon Routh on screen, he's convinced me he is now Superman. I thought he delivered a classy performance. And his Clark Kent was solid.

The airplane sequence was probably my favorite overall and the bank robbery was also very well done. huge from me.

DEFINATELY...Ebert must have been smoking some serious crack before watching it.

He definately did a solid job of creating his own character while also maintaining some of Chris Reeve's persona in the character (which might have been the directing more than the acting).

Like you, the opening gave me chills....I think this is where Singer went right with continuing this from the Donner version (music, opening sequence and addition of Brando).

Is there any better music than John Williams theme from Superman?? I honestly think it might be the best musical piece ever written for a movie. He is definately a genius.

I just have questions about the boy being Supes' son. I'm guessing he is from Superman 2 when Lois and Clark slept together. Unless the astronomers discovered Krypton & Clark had a ship ready, how would he not find out Lois was pregnat? Did the memory loss kiss happen and does Lois think the kid is from someone else? Also I wonder if she knows full well that the kid is Superman's and she is having the kid act sick to hide the fact? Other than those, I think this is the best Superman movie ever. While 1 & 2 were good, they haven't aged that well and this new one bests them both.

Did anyone else feel like the Lois/Superman plot in this movie was really similar to the post rescue portion of the movie Castaway? Alot of parts were giving me some serious de ja vu.

Do you think the audience has forgiven?
Do you think it's because they have faith in Bryan Singer?

Easy. Because it's Superman. And when you add John Williams' theme to the equation, I dare anybody not to cheer at least a little bit when they show the "S" in the credits.

You missed two things in my list:

1) Comic book SUPERHEROES
2) SINCE Blade

My list wasn't entirely comprehensive of the entire "comic book" or even "superhero" genre. I'm not counting anything before 1998, because it was really BLADE that ushered in the "New Age" of superhero movies. And once you start counting films like SIN CITY, THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, V FOR VENDETTA, and THE ROAD TO PERDITION, the list loses focus. I'm talking old school superheroey thrills.

I don't think Superman 4 was as damning to the series as Batman & Robin was to its.

I think the reason why there is so much love for Superman is because he is the ultimate super hero. He is the perfect representation of good. He's also the most well-known comicbook character. The "S" has got to be one of the most recognizeable symbols.

My theory - a new Superman movie hasn't hit the big-screen since the late '80s. That's nearly a 20 year span when parents, kids, comic fans, etc. have NOT been able to see the iconic superhero fly on the big screen in a brilliant new adventure. It's an engrossing experience, no matter the past. There's faith in Singer, plenty of time has passed, and the audience will forgive the past for the opportunity to enjoy a new Superman.

Could it be that Jason is powered by kryptonite! He seemed to access his super-strength after being expose to kryptonite by Lex. The irony would be funny.

I'd say that because so many years have passed, many people have forgotten or gotten over IV. If IV had come out a few years ago, there wouldn't be so much anticipation of this one.


There has also been multiple Superman shows (Lois & Clark, Smallville, the cartoons) since the last movie that people have liked so they are more willing for a new movie.

If you ask, 50% of people probably have no idea that Blade comes from a comic book.

She couldn't of known it was Kal-El's kid. She never remembered Clark being Superman. If that is the case, she wouldn't remember sleeping with Superman, as she slept with him when he was de-powered in the FoS. Then at the end of the film, Superman gave her a kiss and she forgot all about it. Which apparently, right afterwards he left earth and she moved right on to Richard White, thus she believed it to be Richard White's kid.

This has a few problems.

1: She was raped. This is a problem really with the second, but the point is driven home now that we know she got knocked up.

2: She was in love with Superman, but apparently AS SOON as he left she started sleeping with Richard White.

Singer's vague history did nothing but add plot holes.

I had no idea, and I've read comics for the past 25 years!!!

Knowing this country, I bet 50% dont know that Batman and Superman came from comics.

I bet most kiddos are getting their superman info from Smallville (unfortunately).
