Well, as others have already pointed out, it's hardly just the Academy that praised Sideways. Many groups have love it and in my opinion, rightfully so. Maybe they picked it because they *gasp* actually liked a film that didn't connect with you or that you simply didn't like. And thats....okay. Remember, the Oscars are about opinion, there are no correct or incorrect answers (well, except for Shark Tale). Enjoy it when films you love get well-deserved recognition because it means they might be exposed to a wider audience, but when films you don't like get nominated, just shrug your shoulders and say, "to each their own."

I guess that's true. You say it in jest, but I think for many around here it is actually the straight truth. There are people that hold grudges around here for decades based on perceived snubs. I just don't understand why people get so bent out of shape over a subjective thing like this.

And even though it wasn't his first role, you've gotta include Johnny Depp among the TV actors since he became well known through 21 Jump Street.

That would be a tough call - he had prominent roles in A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) and Platoon (1986) before Jumpstreet

Personally, I think Spiderman 2 was probably the people's choice award for last year. It was well liked and sold alot more tickets than F911. I think the whole People's choice award process is probably bologna.

It is funny that someone who didn't want Fahrenheit to win is disputing the People's Choice Award; after all, it was a fair election by the people, right?
Was it? I do not know anyone who voted for the people's choice award. I know that Entertainment Weekly is who picked the nominees.

I think anything that can take internet voting to select a winner is shady. For all we know, MMoore probably had a bunch of his lackies voting for him since he knew he wouldnt win an oscar for it. Of course, I have no proof of this (kinda like his films which are based on speculation mainly)

FYI - Ive seen F911 and thought it was entertaining and a well-made film. But, I do not think it deserves any awards and was glad to see it snubbed at the Oscars.

Here is who I think deserve it in some of the main categories....

ACTOR -- LEADING
Jamie Foxx - RAY

ACTOR -- SUPPORTING
Morgan Freeman - MILLION DOLLAR BABY

ACTRESS -- LEADING
Hilary Swank - MILLION DOLLAR BABY

ACTRESS -- SUPPORTING
Cate Blanchett - THE AVIATOR

DIRECTING
MILLION DOLLAR BABY

BEST PICTURE
MILLION DOLLAR BABY

ANIMATED FEATURE
THE INCREDIBLES

I havent seen Sideways yet though, so that might change my choices, but MDB is the best that I have seen this oscar season.

IMO, the Aviator was overrated, but will probably win. I love Marty though, but just enjoyed MDB alot more. I also think Leo is overrated. There are plenty of actors who should have been nominated over him (maybe Paul Giamatti? or Jim Carrey?).

Any of the following performances should have been nominated for BEST ACTOR instead of Clint Eastwood or Johnny Depp
Javier Bardem for The Sea Inside
Paul Giamatti for Sideways
Kevin Bacon for The Woodsman
Sean Penn for The Assassination of Richard Nixon

I have no problem with the other 3 nominations

I actually thought Clint was GREAT in MDB, but I agree that maybe there were better nominations.

I think Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank lifted him up to a nomination.

I also thought Johnny Depp was good in Finding Neverland. He deserves an oscar at some point in his career. He is one of the best actors around!

Will this be the scene after the Oscars when Johnny Depp wins over Leonardo DiCaprio?

That's awesome! Leonardo got robbed that year, and that's why he's gonna win this year.

a shame eternal sunshine was snubbed.

i'm rooting for moreno to win best actress even though she's definitely the longest shot of all of them. isn't it true that this is her first movie as well? a little shocking don't you think that she was nominated for best actress? she's good in the movie but didn't particularly think it was oscar worthy. i do like the fact that it's coming out of left field though, and so for that alone she gets my vote.

got 3 things to say about this:

1. while im very sad to see HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS snubbed for best foreign language film, it made my day to see YESTERDAY on there. Yesterday is one of the best films ive ever seen. got a chance to see it at the la film festival. incredibly moving and powerful film. a must see if it gets released. (dont read imdb.com. the movie will in no way be R rated and i dont know what the fuck the user ratings are about)

2. finding neverland is incredibly overrated. i cant believe people are lapping this shit up so much. how vanilla, how bland can a movie get? jesus, it was like a hallmark card made into a movie with shitty special effects. and it was horribly miscasted. really suprised by this

3. giamati's snubb is bullshit. how could depp get it over him. he fucking slept through the whole thing!

With such colorful language, how can any of us dare disagree. I'm no prude, but I kinda liked it better around here when such language was frowned upon rather than used liberally when not even necessary.

Finding Neverland was one of the best (if not THE best) movie I saw last year.

and all this hoopla around Sideways is quickly making it one of the worst. It was just "ok" when I saw it. But I seriously don't understand any of this craziness about it. It was just damn boring. And even as an actor, I don't get the appeal of Paul. There's not a damn thing special about him or his performance.

KATE WINSLET everybody! (ClapClapClap)
If there was any film she deserved it for... it was Eternal Sunshine, which has her best, most varied, most touching performance.

Clive Owen... man oh man.. he DESERVES this, but I'm worried (see the Jamie Foxx bit below)

Very surprised Giamatti didn't get his due. He didn't feel like a long shot and he didn't seem undeserving. The Polar Express wasn't technically animated, but motion capture (sorry Mr. Zemeckis, PERFORMANCE capture), so technically it's ineleigible. Same thing for Waking Life all those years ago.
But yeah, fucking SHARK TALE?

Glad Alfie's "Old Habits Die Hard" didn't nominated for best song! Shameless, transparent attempt to recapture old oscar glory... though "Believe" got nominated for The Polar Express, so there's a song that did it's job; get a nomination. It's a terrible song. Josh Groban sings a Christmas Song, and it's the worst, most joyless Christmas song ever. He sounds like he's frowning.

Tupac: Resurrection for best documentary? Are they mental?

A little disappointed with the rules for nomainating foreign films. I would have loved The Motorcycle Diaries to get more notice.

I didn't think Hackford should have been nominated for Ray. As a director, he's not that spectacular - more of a perfunctory director who understands that the story's important, so I do respect him for that. I just don't think he deserved the director nom. Also, the film didn't really need teh editing nod.

It's kinda sad that people are taking this opportunity to bash Fahrenheit 9/11 once more. (For the record, I simply think there were a lot of better films.) Let's bash films that were nominated, people!
Still, it's odd; I expected there to be uproar from some folk over The Passion Of The Christ not sweeping it... (braces himself for the inevitable poster who says "Hollywood's run by corrupt jews")

Jamie Foxx. After today, he can't get arrested in this town. I worry, though, that the supporting nod (don't get me wrong, he was very good - he made Collateral's script almost believable) is a consolation prize, as if there's a disappointment expected for Best Actor. In case Leo gets it, for instance, then Jamie'll get the best supporting actor award.

What's up with score? Was the music in the first Harry Potter films so drastically diferent? I'm told that The Passion's score was great, but for the life of me I can't remember it.

And finally, and I do mean this with utmost sincerity...
... while it was very unlikely that Shaun Of The Dead would have ever received a Best Original Screenplay nod (an award that, if there was justice, it would have received), I was surprised that it did not receive a best makeup nod. Same for the remake of Dawn Of The Dead. Say what you will about the films, but the makeup was not child's play. These people deserve acclaim for their work.
I agree Tupac Resurrected? There were some great docu's released last year that were completely excluded: The Corporation, Paperclips, Riding Giants, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Festival Express. Guess the nomination board was trying to be PC.

"Old Habits Die Hard" is a great very memorable song, shame on the exclusion.

Even though the film was terrible, Vangelis' score to Oliver Stone's Alexander was magnificent. Incidently the only film score I bought last year.

He's still young and he's not going anywhere - he still has many more great performances in him. Better he win for something deserving than his Keith Richards impersonation, or his sleepwalking through Neverland.

Yeah, I don't see The Aviator getting both Best Picture and Best Director.
