Cult films cannot be "overrated" (a term I'm sick of) or "underrated". These are non-mainstream films ("Donnie Darko") or in some cases, mainstream films that went completely wrong perhaps by over-the-top acting, etc. ("Valley of the Dolls", "Mommie Dearest") Others are classic films that were perhaps ahead of their time ("Touch of Evil"), and genre films ("The Evil Dead" films).

Some (not all) of these films have achieved a cult following because they are so bad...but in a very cool/enjoyable way ("Plan 9 From Outer Space").

Personally, I do not believe there are any "overrated"cult films. We all just have different tastes.

Some of my personal favorite "cult" films:

"Freaks"
"Touch of Evil"
"Johnny Guitar"
"Night of the Living Dead" (original)
"Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!"
"King of Hearts"
"Valley of the Dolls"
"Barbarella"
"Flesh"
"Easy Rider"
"Beyond the Valley of the Dolls"
"Private Parts" (1970s Paul Bartel film...not the Howard Stern film)
"Trash"
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
"The Man Who Fell to Earth"
"Rock and Roll High School"
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"
"Empire of the Ants"
"Death Race 2000"
"Eraserhead"
"Eating Raoul"
"Dawn of the Dead" (original)
"The Evil Dead"
"Liquid Sky"
"Videodrome"
All of John Waters films
Some of Kenneth Anger's films
"Heathers"
"Welcome to the Dollhouse"
"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"
"Bottle Rocket"
"Fight Club"
"Donnie Darko"
"Ginger Snaps"
"Bubba Ho Tep"

This whole discussion is rather silly. Cult Classics, by definition, appeal to only a select group (you know, the "cult" part). Which naturally means that the majority will not be big fans. If you consider one to be "overrated", I guess that means you just don't happen to be in that particular cult.
Agreed

That is uncalled for. It's ridiculous that other people have different tastes than you?

Rocky Horror = Very Gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if that's not your cup of tea, I don't think Rocky Horror is the great cinematic ambassador to homosexual culture. But I do think that's what owes a lot of it's cult appeal to, it must have been something quite different for the time.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, if you do check it out, see it at one of the famed midnight showing with audience participation. Definately tedious as a rental, but a bit more lively in person.
Rocky Horror definitely has a large gay following but has a large straight following as well. I think it appeals to people who love cheesy/cool 1950s science fiction/horror films, and others who perhaps feel cut off from the "mainstream" (gay and straight).

In high school and college, the midnight shows were a great place for me to meet people. I made some cool friends (gay and straight).

Any flick that featured the debut of Tori Spelling should be rightfully served as death row punishment. Unless it's that TV movie where she's the bitchy cheerleader and Kelly Martin's the nerdy weirdo who stabs her to death, because that was awesome.
But God forbid you get me on a tangent about the elusive sex appeal of Shelly Long in the midst of her desperate decent into motion picture mediocrity. Bless her heart.

well now wait a sec, everyone's entitled to their opinion, and you can loathe "Troop Beverly Hills" but I have to chime in here and state that I also enjoyed this film.

Any "Ladybugs" fans here?

Threads of this kind always seem to illicit reponses by people that think they have better taste than others and seem to feel a need to tell them about it. You don't like a movie that I like? Fine. However, don't tell me or others that my taste is inferior to yours. When you do, any credibility you may have in the eyes of others is diminished by your own film-snobbery (even if someone agrees with you).

I agree with this. I prefer to use the term "overhyped."

However, I also agree that Donnie Darko is a turd.

How about the Hall of Shame? Was your response for admitting you like "Troop Beverly Hills" and "Ladybugs"? If so, to each his own. Just like freudguy said, one can disagree without trying to make the other feel inferior. Or saying the movie is a turd.

Are you saying this because somebody picked you out or because people selected to say they "hate" a bunch of your favorite movies?

Its ridiculous that so many people rant and rave about a very crappy movie.

Listen kid, the day you stop worshipping that turd-burgler Christopher Lambert is the day I might take that turd of a comment seriously.

Such unwarratented agression torwards "Donnie Darko" leads me to believe you may secretly watch your overplayed "Troop Beverly Hills" video in your footed Tonka pajamas.
But then again, I enjoy a good round of masturbation as I watch my beloved "Xanadu", so who am I to judge?

Hey, who likes Hot Pockets?
Christopher Lambert? Where does he come in?

All this talk about Donnie Darko piqued my interest.
