!? They're changing the climax? What's the point?

That's curious, has anyone read David Hayter's script for Watchmen? It got some pretty high praise from Alan Moore and I'm kind of curious if there were any changes in that.

I thought solid snake did a pretty damn good job with the X2 script, though I'm sure some additions were made.

so what the hell is Watchmen? People went crazy for the trailer last night and none of us had ever heard of it. I'm guessing it's some crazy big fanboy comic thing? It looked like 300 + The Fountain...and I loved the Fountain.

To date, Watchmen remains the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award, and is also the only graphic novel to appear on Time Magazine's 2005 list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen <-- everything you'd want to know, and then some.

Basically though, it's about an alternate 1980s reality with a group of masked adventurers/vigilantes and a guy with super powers.

The use of Dylan is intriguing to say the least. Given the way that Snyder incorporated Cash into Dawn of the Dead, I'd expect the first five minutes of the film to be bang-up good.

As for the conclusion:
Spoiler:
The faux alien invasion bit always felt a bit strange to me, and I recall that fans and critics initially felt that Moore had rushed the writing at the end of the series. I think it makes sense from a meta view (the threat of an alien invasion is probably the only way to unify humanity), but even Ozy would have to know that it's a temporary solution to a long-term problem. Sooner or later North Korea would catch onto the fact that Mars is not attacking and would return to harassing their neighbors. Plus, I don't know that Ozy's genetically engineered superpets would play well outside of the comics medium.

I've heard very recently that they aren't changing the ending at all; it's been confirmed in lots of places. At one point, some older versions (late 80s) of the script had a much different ending, probably mostly due to the difficulty of visually doing justice to it at that time.

I'm still so pissed my theater didnt put the trailer for Watchmen on the print of The Dark Knight when I saw the midnight showing. But they put that damn star wars cartoon on it. I would have loved to have seen the crowd reaction. Plus I told the girl I went with about the Pumpkins song since she is obsessed with Smashing Pumpkins and she got excited to see it as well. Alas, no trailer.
I wonder what other music will be in the film though. I would love to see some Elvis Costello since he is referenced in the novel. ALso if they find a way to put the trailer song n the movie I would be all too happy.

Another easter egg has been found:

Link

Spoiler:

The guy is holding a walkie talkie instead of the gun he's seen holding in the subsequent shots of the scene (for the whole thing, head to around the 1:30 mark of the trailer). According to Watchmen director Zack Snyder, the MPAA wouldn't allow the gun to feature in this shot because there's a rule against guns pointed out at the audience (in ads only). So, Snyder claims to be referencing Steven Spielberg -- I see it as a jovial attack of the filmmaker's disappointing self-censorship -- because of the 2002 re-release version of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, which substituted all guns in the movie with walkies.

excellent trailer and though i don't know anything about the "Watchmen" lore, but have the graphic novel right here to be read, along with Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" i will wait now with baited breath to see this one.

The trailer looks good. I was nervous about the film adaptation because I feel that some of the complexities of the source will be lost in a 2.5 hour film adaptation and that the graphic novel itself is overrated. The choice of the song was perfect.

I hope that this is a hit so we get Sandman and Preacher films/TV miniseries.

I've always heard the praise about Watchmen but for some reason never picked it up. After this trailer I just ordered it.

Great Trailer! I am really looking forward to this now!

I wonder if I should read the graphic novel or wait till after I watch the movie.

Read the graphic novel first.

Another excellent introduction to Watchmen movie by debuting its trailer in Dark Knight.

Wow, I don't usually re-read comics or graphic novels but this trailer has me seriously thinking about picking this up again and re-reading Watchmen. I had the GN years ago but I think it's gone. Frankly, I think being older will help me understand it better.

If anyone has a few extra bucks to throw around. I highly recommend the Absolute Edition. Simply gorgeous. The recoloring is a huge night and day difference from the regular trade.

For the love of god, yes, re-read the graphic novel. And I also highly recommend the Absolute Edition. I've become addicted to those things. Got the Watchmen, Sandman (the three current volumes available), Dark Knight, and Long Halloween Absolute Editions, and have on order Sandman Vol. 4, Ronin, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Well worth the money.

They're releasing animated/narrated versions of the Watchmen comics for free on iTunes. Chapter 1 is up right now. It's ~25 minutes long.

Warner Bros. confirmed in June 2006 that Zack Snyder would direct a film adaptation of Watchmen,[52] which is set for release on March 6, 2009.[53] The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.[54] Previously, directors including Paul Greengrass, Terry Gilliam,[55] Darren Aronofsky,[56] and screenwriter David Hayter have been attached to the project over the years.[57] While Moore believes that David Hayter's screenplay was "as close as I could imagine anyone getting to Watchmen," he asserted he did not intend to see the film if it were made.[58] Moore "refuses to have his name attached to any...films."[59] However, Gibbons has stated he feels Snyder can make a good film and is supporting him.[60]

huh?

I've probably watched this trailer as frequently as I did the first trailer for Sin City a few years back. Reading the graphic novel now coincidentally. Can't friggin' wait.
