Watchmen (D: Snyder)

I'm having a hard time getting a read on this film. Mostly because I don't know a lot of the actors. Not that this a bad thing -- but sometimes if you know an actor you have more confidence in how well they'll play the role.

The trailer looks incredible, I can't stop watching it online.
I absolutely love the comic, I bought it monthly when it first came out and have reread it many times, and I have a really good feeling about this film now (I hope I'm not disappointed!)

huh?
huh?
Maybe Moore is so big inside his little house that he lets a bad movie review or poor box office performance get to him. Crying over spilt milk. It kind of goes like that around here - people forget that, outside this forum, not many people know [or care about] directors and producers or any of that stuff. My folks don't get offended if a heavily-advertised movie sucks. And they don't gush about a good movie to all their friends. Not many people do.
I wonder if he'd be so bitter if his movies were acclaimed and made money? Or if they were lousy movies, but made money? Or vice versa?

Then again, I'm of the belief that nearly every graphic novel conversion into film has been terrible. Sin City, 300, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen... None has done anything for me.
Although, Howard The Duck could be the exception to my rule...

Just because some or even most of the adaptations of his works were bad doesn't mean that all of them will automatically be bad in perpetuity. Perhaps if he took the time to get involved instead of immediately dismissing any attempt, then more would turn out well. Frank Miller is incredibly pleased with how Sin City and 300 turned out.

Granted, both Sin City and 300 pale in comparison to, well, just about everything, but I digress.

Yes, but this discussion is not about how much you like the adaptations of graphic novels, but rather how much the authors of the original graphic novels like the adaptations.

Well...I don't see how your argument holds up. I mean, Miller did co-direct Sin City. It was very, oh so very, faithful to his works. In fact, on various tid bits on the DVD features, Miller admits that most changes to the project was from him. To the point that an actor or Rodriguez would try to stick closer to the material oddly enough. Sin City was a perfect success for adapting a material from the comic medium to film. In part it really helps that Sin City isn't a more broader world of works. That's just on Miller's works. 300 was ok, the problem with that was that it added more story to it. The thing about 300 was that it wasn't so much about the story but it was the visuals that pulled you in for the read. The whole Queen section of the film actually dragged it down a bit.
Moore's work for better or worse for conversion to film is totally about story. V for Vendetta, which I thought was good, was not horrible or great. It just kinda made it into an attempt at big action/blockbuster type of film. Watchmen may or may not work. The story is very trippy the more I see that trailer and remember the comic before my hands. In the comic's world it's not TOO weird, but in live action it may be too serious and surreal. I can see it working, I just hope it really respects the underpinnings for the story it's based on.

Though Howard the Duck is hard to argue against. :-)

Went to the local bookstore to pick up a copy yesterday (I could swear I had a copy, but couldn't find it), and the clerk said that they had sold 4 copies in the last hour. Sounds like interest is building already.

Just watched the "motion comic" and was pretty impressed. There was actually more animation that I expected. Looking forward to the next chapter, though I may just read my copy of Watchmen by then. I'll agree with the complaints on Amazon though, maybe they could get a female to read the female roles though... I realize it's probably too late for that, but it seemed like the Silk Spectre was a drag queen.

I was at the Comic-Con panel and they showed an extended trailer... more violent stuff... and it was awesome. Huge crowd response too. I'm not that familiar with "Watchmen" but the more I see, the more I want to see this movie. I'm not sure how successful the film will be with the mainstream audience but, from what I've seen, it could become a huge cult classic.
