European versions have the fight in B&W. Only Asia gets color.
I thought the B&W worked rather well myself. |

I just wanted to say that I find it very amusing (if not stupid) that people felt the Black & White scene took them out of the movie but not the anime sequence. It just bogles the mind.

I thought the anime sequence was exquisite, my only discontent with the B&W is that I wanted to see red everywhere :-D
That said - the B&W was done well, from eye gouge to blink. P.S. - I see what is meant by the stunt woman now, ah well, I didn't pay attention to it in the movie (was loving the action too much to care perhaps) - and at least it isn't anywhere is bad as that Jet Li vs. Jet Li crap from The One. |
I'm just wondering if we will see a body in a trunk in Vol. 2 since all the rest of Tarantino's 4 films have this particular type of scene; of course he can be forgiven since Vol. 2 is really part of one movie.

Well, we did see Sophie Fatale in the trunk, complete with customary "trunk cam" view. I think that was the obligatory reference in this film.

There wasn't much stunt work done in the house of Blue Leaves that Mrs. Thurman didn't do herself. She did most of her own stunts throughout the film, with the exception of most of the driving.
The anime sequence *did* pull me out of the film - it was just as jarring as the B&W, but was a superiour sequence, I think. Another problem with much of the B&W sequence (which only lasted about 2 1/2 minutes or so) was that many of the cuts (excuse the pun) were with tighter lenses - it looks like the Asian version will get not only a colour version of that scene, but also some wider shots where you can see what's happening. The U.S. version looks like it was cut with a f***ing meat cleaver. |
A jarring cut to me was in the coma ward when she attacked the would-be rapist. It looked like there should have been more to that scene.

Just got back from seeing this at a 12:40AM showing that had a decent amount of people in it. I have to say that it didn't sound like the people in the theater were very happy about the movie. Very talkative theater, and apparently a lot of people with foot fetishes since they kept commenting on how unattractive Uma's feet were.
I have mixed emotions about the movie. There are many scenes I like, but I would have liked some tighter editing. It felt like some scenes were drawn out way too long. I like some tension building, but some of it was excessive. Maybe I just have a shorter attention span than I previously thought. The scene with the man from Okinawa was incredibly funny. I wish there was more of him in the film. I liked the anime style used in the movie. It had a nice gritty look to it that I wouldn't mind seeing a whole movie of. The black and white didn't bother me, although you people made me notice those red dots :). I don't think Uma was that great with a sword for all her training. Everyone around her looked much more impressive, but I wasn't really expecting her to be that good so I still enjoyed the fight scenes. The cinematography was incredible, and I can't agree more with the people who enjoyed the music. It really fit the mood of the movie well. I will probably purchase this on DVD because I have a feeling I will enjoy it more upon repeat viewings, but it better damn well have a commentary. |

She missed her safety mat, landed on her stunt co-ordinator and dislocated her wrist, badly tearing ligaments. Thurman trained at least eight hours a day, five days a week, and not doing her favorite exercise, yoga. "They said, 'Forget it - it's weightlifting for you,'" Thurman recalls. Then came the fight training, with Hong Kong director and fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, of "Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame. He drilled Thurman in three styles of kung fu, two styles of sword fighting, plus knife throwing, knife fighting and hand-to-hand combat. "The first week or so I ended up in the bathroom crying to myself," admits Thurman, 33, who brought Roan and her first child, 5-year-old Maya, to the California training center. "I'd come home to the kids and every part of my body hurt," she says. "I was breast-feeding and sleep-deprived because I was up all night with the baby." And that was just the beginning. After the training, Thurman flew to Beijing to begin a shoot that lasted more than five months and took her from a mountaintop Chinese Buddhist monastery to a scorpion-infested ghost town in Mexico. "It was a brutal shoot," says Thurman, who jokes that the movie should be called "Kill Uma." "I get buried alive. I walk through the desert. I take on 80 men at one time. I get shot in the head. I get shot in the chest. I get shot in the leg. I get stabbed with needles filled with drugs. "The only thing Quentin didn't do was set me on fire and drown me." |
