I don't think Quentin is quite that apodictic.

What about Europe ?

does the German print of the movie have the fight scene in color ?

RichC2 10-17-03 07:15 PM

I didn't notice stunt people :(

What scenes particularly and what makes you say they are (just curious)

right before Uma slices off sophie's arm as she's calling O-ren out.

Groucho,

VERY funny comment! Funniest thing I've seen on the net all day, next to that "Star Wars Kid" video!!!

rofl!

Inverse 10-17-03 07:52 PM

European versions have the fight in B&W. Only Asia gets color.

I thought the B&W worked rather well myself.

I think I already mentioned it was throughout the whole House of Blue Leaves scene. Uma's stunt double is a little shorter, a little more bottom heavy and had a wig on. I didn't think it was difficult to spot her at all. A lot of the shots were during the more acrobatic stuff, but I noticed it throughout the whole scene, even during the silhouette shots.

purplechoe 10-17-03 08:21 PM

I just wanted to say that I find it very amusing (if not stupid) that people felt the Black & White scene took them out of the movie but not the anime sequence. It just bogles the mind.

no no no, your missing the point. the anime scene wasn't an MPAA/ disney thing, it still had red blood so thus, it was still good..

-rolleyes-

I agree with you there.

RichC2 10-17-03 08:52 PM

I thought the anime sequence was exquisite, my only discontent with the B&W is that I wanted to see red everywhere :-D

That said - the B&W was done well, from eye gouge to blink.

P.S. - I see what is meant by the stunt woman now, ah well, I didn't pay attention to it in the movie (was loving the action too much to care perhaps) - and at least it isn't anywhere is bad as that Jet Li vs. Jet Li crap from The One.

DVDho78DTS 10-17-03 09:26 PM

I'm just wondering if we will see a body in a trunk in Vol. 2 since all the rest of Tarantino's 4 films have this particular type of scene; of course he can be forgiven since Vol. 2 is really part of one movie.

cultshock 10-17-03 10:13 PM

Well, we did see Sophie Fatale in the trunk, complete with customary "trunk cam" view. I think that was the obligatory reference in this film.

jough 10-17-03 10:14 PM

There wasn't much stunt work done in the house of Blue Leaves that Mrs. Thurman didn't do herself. She did most of her own stunts throughout the film, with the exception of most of the driving.

The anime sequence *did* pull me out of the film - it was just as jarring as the B&W, but was a superiour sequence, I think.

Another problem with much of the B&W sequence (which only lasted about 2 1/2 minutes or so) was that many of the cuts (excuse the pun) were with tighter lenses - it looks like the Asian version will get not only a colour version of that scene, but also some wider shots where you can see what's happening.

The U.S. version looks like it was cut with a f***ing meat cleaver.

cultshock 10-17-03 10:16 PM

A jarring cut to me was in the coma ward when she attacked the would-be rapist. It looked like there should have been more to that scene.

Oh yeah, I must have just imagined all those shots of the stunt double. I also must have imagined this interview where some imaginary woman talks about spending months working as Uma's stunt double in the House of Blue Leaves fight:

I thought the movie was really good with only the lack of great dialogue keeping it from being great in my opinion.

Funny thing: When Sofie Fatale is rolled down the hill into the street at the end some guy yelled with a laugh "she is still rolling!" It was freakin' funny the way he said it and for some reason fit the mood of the movie.

George Costanza: "That's gotta hurt!... that's gotta HURT!"

unbelievable. QT says one little thing about POSSIBLE future DVDs, and everyone on the 'net takes it for fact. i read the thing too. all he sais was, "I'd like to do this, this and this..." QT seems like a very flighty/flaky guy who changes his views 10 timea an hour.

i HOPE there's 3 versions, especially with a DC, but as of now, QT has said about 10 words on the DVDs. let's not jump to conclusions and assume what QT says before the movie ever opened will definitely happen. has Miramax ever released a super-duper DC version?

spainlinx0 10-18-03 02:35 AM

Just got back from seeing this at a 12:40AM showing that had a decent amount of people in it. I have to say that it didn't sound like the people in the theater were very happy about the movie. Very talkative theater, and apparently a lot of people with foot fetishes since they kept commenting on how unattractive Uma's feet were.

I have mixed emotions about the movie. There are many scenes I like, but I would have liked some tighter editing. It felt like some scenes were drawn out way too long. I like some tension building, but some of it was excessive. Maybe I just have a shorter attention span than I previously thought.

The scene with the man from Okinawa was incredibly funny. I wish there was more of him in the film. I liked the anime style used in the movie. It had a nice gritty look to it that I wouldn't mind seeing a whole movie of. The black and white didn't bother me, although you people made me notice those red dots :).

I don't think Uma was that great with a sword for all her training. Everyone around her looked much more impressive, but I wasn't really expecting her to be that good so I still enjoyed the fight scenes. The cinematography was incredible, and I can't agree more with the people who enjoyed the music. It really fit the mood of the movie well.

I will probably purchase this on DVD because I have a feeling I will enjoy it more upon repeat viewings, but it better damn well have a commentary.

well if it did come from the horses mouth, why should we take it as fact.. FOR THE TIME BEING. Yes, the dvd's might change, but from what we know of.. AT THIS MOMENT is that he wants to do three dvd's. Also, that is the directors cut. Did you miss the interview with the chicago times where he states that the B&W is his perfered version?

You must've, because there are few shots with Uma's stunt double in that sequence.

I also must have imagined this interview
No, the interview is real - but you obviously didn't read it all the way. I quote from your link:

Last November, Bell's career almost ended after a high-powered stunt involving a harness and wires attached to a hydraulic arm yanked her backwards (Thurman's character, the Bride, had taken a bullet in the chest) with too much force. She missed her safety mat, landed on her stunt co-ordinator and dislocated her wrist, badly tearing ligaments. Surgery, pins, three months in plaster, rehabilitation and much pain

followed – along with the end of her active involvement in Kill Bill, although she was kept on the payroll.
How do you read this as "did all of the stunts in Kill Bill"?

Here's another interview with QT and Uma that contradicts what you posted:

From The NY Post, and every other interview, on the set footage, and press release from Kill Bill, not to mention accounts from those on the set (raises hand):

http://www.nypost.com/living/7045.htm

But the first time Thurman picked up one of the 10-pound swords, she swung it around and accidentally smacked herself in the head - nearly bursting into tears.

Tarantino told her to suck it up because he was determined she do most of her own stunts.

"There was no way we were going to use quick cuts or CGI [computer graphics]," he says. "Not in this movie."

Thurman trained at least eight hours a day, five days a week, and not doing her favorite exercise, yoga.

"They said, 'Forget it - it's weightlifting for you,'" Thurman recalls.

Then came the fight training, with Hong Kong director and fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, of "Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame. He drilled Thurman in three styles of kung fu, two styles of sword fighting, plus knife throwing, knife fighting and hand-to-hand combat.

"The first week or so I ended up in the bathroom crying to myself," admits Thurman, 33, who brought Roan and her first child, 5-year-old Maya, to the California training center.

"I'd come home to the kids and every part of my body hurt," she says. "I was breast-feeding and sleep-deprived because I was up all night with the baby."

And that was just the beginning.

After the training, Thurman flew to Beijing to begin a shoot that lasted more than five months and took her from a mountaintop Chinese Buddhist monastery to a scorpion-infested ghost town in Mexico.

"It was a brutal shoot," says Thurman, who jokes that the movie should be called "Kill Uma."

"I get buried alive. I walk through the desert. I take on 80 men at one time. I get shot in the head. I get shot in the chest. I get shot in the leg. I get stabbed with needles filled with drugs.

"The only thing Quentin didn't do was set me on fire and drown me."

uhh, lets not do this again...

anyway, the fact that QT said those things about the DVDs means very little to me. i'll believe it when i see it. and this question: has miramax ever released a DC?

BIG QUESTION: why did the Bride follow Sofie fatale for a while, look in the window, and then drive away? i thought she was following her to find Oren.

The real question is how did you read anything I wrote as, "Zoe Bell did all the stunts in Kill Bill"? You're just twisting what I said to make your point, but you aren't going to make me believe that I didn't see a stunt double in the House of Blue Leaves fight and you aren't going to make me ignore the fact that Zoe Bell said she worked for two months filming before she was injured. Just wait until the DVD comes out and I guarantee you I can come up with a whole bunch of screenshots where Uma has been replaced with a stunt double. The whole "I did all my own stunts" hype is one of the oldest promo bits in the history of filmmaking.
