Looks like another bland LXG or Bulletproof Monk type of movie.

I'll skip it.

The hell there isn't!!

I just hope hellboy is more of an adventure then an action team-up flick, but it's just the trailer, a lot of trailers dont reflect the quality of story, remember the episode I trailer?

Hmmm...

Am looking forward to this, though.

He wasn't the lead.

Also for anyone complaining about the special effects in the Hellboy trailer, at the time that trailer was made, the special effects were less than 15% done. And the movie has a fairly moderate budget of $60 million.

Seems like they got it right, but I'll withhold judgment until I see it in theaters. Probably a wise move to move it up to Spring, since it probably wouldn't set well with Summer crowds or fare well agains the competition.

So no Quick Time version yet? *sigh*

I was looking forward to seeing it today and today is almost over. Didn't they say that version would come out today?

Its much more impressive in Quicktime/Large and distinguishes itself from XMen a lot better in it.

The effects look quite good and the costumes are pretty damn good. To say the least - looks entertaining

That was so much better. Now can anyone gimme a quick rundown on who we're looking at and what their respective "powers" are? Particularly the other "freaks"? So Selma Blair transforms right?

Hellboy is a demon

Abe Sapien is a fish man - the last of his kind apparently

Liz is a

pyrokinetic = firestarter

Those are the main guys. The comics have introduced a few more weird characters but they probably won't show up here.
Spoiler:
although the russian corpse Ivan looks a LOT like the corpse in "The Corpse" -- is there an echo in here? -- and some of the clips and shots I've seen are almost straight out of that story

btw. the trailer is downloadable, even sweeter.

Yeah, I just realized they are making these movies for comic book fans only. Because I just watched that trailer everyone was raving about and I have no desire to watch it. Doesn't look any different than LXG. I know who Spidey, Wolvie, Batman and a few other superheroes but when it comes to these movies they have no wide appeal.

My thoughts too. Hellboy, the title character, didn't even seem to get that much time in the trailer. At least no more then the fish person and that human guy in the beginning.

Couldn't agree with you more. The man is an excedingly under-appreciated actor. Glad to see he is getting some more face time.

I'd say the reason for that -- made more evident from the interviews of Del Toro that I've read -- is because most folks really have no idea who Hellboy is. The movie will be sticking as "close" to the comic as is possible given the variation in mediums, and the fact that there are things possible in the comic that simply aren't possible in film.

However, the idea of this first trailer is simply to establish name recognition with the general public. Get them interested. I think the actual film will have a much different tone than the trailer implies and will have much more varied settings, however, if they showed Rasputin doing something nutty (aside from the glimpses) -- most people just wouldn't have a clue what was going on.

This really looks like a great comic book movie in that it might be the first one made for fans only. If they had been trying to get wide box-office appeal they would have cast Vin Diesel as Hellboy.

With an apparent budget of 60 million, I don't think that the studio decided, "let's make a movie for the fanboys." It would appear that's what they made, but I don't think any suit in Hollywood would intentionally shell out that kind of money to make a movie for a limited audience. Hellboy is not Spider-Man, X-Men, Hulk etc.. It has a much smaller installed fan base then those books have.

Admittedly, I know next to nothing about Hellboy, so I guess in this particular case I would be considered the "general public". The trailer didn't do anything for me. It didn't really pique my interest. I would think that the object of the first trailer, and movie for that matter, in a new franchise would be to try to appeal to the broadest audience possible. To establish name recognition you want give the audience something that they turn to the person next to them and say, "that was cool." There wasn't that effect in this trailer. I was instead saying, "what the hell was that?" I think the overall tone of the flick is going to be just as in the trailer, something that the fans identify with but alienates the rest. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see the mass appeal to make this thing a hit. I know I'm going to take heat for saying this, but that's the problem with getting hardcore fanboys to direct a comic film. Del Toro is a huge Hellboy fan and it appears that has heavily influenced his decision making. Bryan Singer, Richard Donner, Sam Rami, Stephen Norrington (talking Blade here not LXG) were all comic fans, but not rabid fans. I think that helped them to distance themselves and make some good critical judgements in adapting what are widely considered the best comic book films made (Burton is an exception). Then again it's only my opnion.

they played the trailer before bad santa tonight and i thought it looked awesome. I never read the comic but I knew it was one ... I think it's gonna be a great movie. What really surprised me was them using music in the trailer from Demmu Borgir, a pretty obscure and unknown death metal band (their music is the metallic orchestray part in the 2nd half of the trailer when Hellboy punches the truck). Being the metal lover I am, it's always great to see non-Mtv-slave bands getting more exposure

Raimi has been described as a pretty rabid fan of Spiderman.

I think that this topic is either hit or miss . . . another director who was was a rabid fan of the story on which his movies were based was Peter Jackson. It seems to have worked out pretty well for him (and us ). But, I think you are right that having someone that close to the original work, while it can be a huge payoff (a la PJ and LOTR), it is, also, definitely an added risk.

Yeah, your right That's why The Matrix went on to be a cultural & world wide phenomenon. That's why Blade out of nowhere grossed $70 million in the states alone with an R rating, spawned 2 sequels & as an unknown comic book character is responsible for bringing back the comic book genre as a profitable movie niche. That's why Road to Perdition, American Splendor, Ghost Story & countless other movies got endless praise from around the world. You hit the nail on the head, if it's not Spider-man, Superman, or a character you recognize then it's certainly means it was only main for the rare comic book fan & certainly it has no "wide appeal".
