I dislike Ron Pearlman.
I'm not as excited about this now as I was before. :(

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

I'm giddy about it. I was afraid it wouldn't turn out okay, but it looks pretty good, actually.

cultshock 05-12-03 06:37 PM

I know its just a poster but, for what its worth, that looks damn good.

Giantrobo 05-12-03 06:39 PM

WOW! I don't know much about Hellboy, well I know of him from seeing the comic in stores and reading about him in WIZARD mag, and I can say that Ron looks GREAT!

I wonder when the "he looks fake" geeks will start sounding off?

I agree.

There better not be any CGI in this movie. Cuz dammit, I hates me the CGI.

:p

Josh-da-man 05-12-03 07:49 PM

Heh.

I saw the picture and thought it was one of those limited edition busts of comic book characters that they sell.

I guess that's pretty high praise.

UKingdom 05-12-03 10:17 PM

That looks amazing

Tuan Jim 05-13-03 06:47 AM

Looks great, and the gun doesn't look nearly as bad when he's holding it as it did in another shot I saw of it by itself. I guess they can't really do a realistic gun like the one shown in the comic book, but it would be pretty cool.

Also, Abe Sapien will be pretty much 100% CGI IIRC. Someone will be playing him like Andy Sirkis did Gollum, but visually it'll be cgi.

Really hope they can get the sense of scale down. After seeing LOTR it can definitely be done, so I've got pretty high hopes.

From the IMDB they are listing Ilsa as a character (along with Rasputin who was pretty much a given), so we'll hopefully see some of the original Nazi goon squad. I'd love a Lobster Johnson cameo at the very least as well ;p

F For Fake 05-13-03 08:17 AM

Hellboy....coooooollllll..... (drool pooling around ankles)

Get Me Coffee 05-13-03 08:27 AM

Looks pretty sweet!

Goldberg74 05-13-03 08:50 AM

Can someone answer a question for me... hopefully its a Hellboy fan:

Those round things on the front of his head... did they use to be horns and someone cut them off?

Spoiler:
That's exactly what they were. At one point in the comics, he visits Hell, and they regrow. He snaps them off and uses them as weapons.

CharlesC 05-13-03 09:44 AM

That looks awsome! I want to see his giant hand!

Sessa17 05-13-03 11:14 AM

This is THE movie I'm looking forward to the most over the next 2 years. Hellboy is my favorite comic book character & Del Toro is my favorite new director. What will seperate this movie from other comic book movies is the fact tha Del Toro is a HUGE Hellboy fan (BPRD shirts in Blade 2 & Hellboy references) & he always invisioned Pearlman as hellboy. Plus the fact that Mike Mignola is on set the entire time during the making of this movie. I have complete faith that this will be a PERFECT comic book adaptation. And that picture looks, well, perfect.

Spoiler:
I thought part of his "thing" is he cuts them off to rebel against his heritage? Isn't it a thing he has to do more than once?

Spoiler:
I know he cut them off when he was younger, but I don't know that they ever grew back. I may just not be able to remember it if they did. When he went to Hell, they automatically regrew, which is what I was talking about.

it's happened more than once. I can't be bothered to look them up right now, but there're at least 2 occurrences of them growing back IIRC.

If you're interested in comics, I'd suggest picking up the TPBs. About $18/pop but very good value IMO.

The general, published order is:

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction
HB: Wake the Devil
HB: The Chained Coffin and Others
HB: The Right Hand of Doom
HB: Conqueror Worm

And then they've put out a separate BPRD TPB (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development -- the agency that HB works for) that collects a recent miniseries as well as a previous Abe Sapien (fishboy) one-shot.

There's also a new bi-monthly anthology series featuring HB and BPRD stories by a variety of artists and writers -- very good stuff IMO. Love Eric Powell's work.

But before we get moved to book talk, I just wanted to note that it appears from the bits I've read here and there that the movie will at least incorporate some aspects of "Seed of Destruction." -- can't tell if there'll be anything from other books. At least we know there'll be lots of Nazis!

I know absolutely nothing of the comic, either, but this thread piqued my interest. I just reserved all of the above from the public library, as well as one called Bones of Giants. Thanks for the heads-up.

Bones of Giants is a short novel written by someone else -- Christopher Guest? -- featuring more HB and BPRD action. There's also another one called "Lost Army" -- think both have illustrations by Mignola, but I haven't read them yet.

Deckard-10 05-14-03 10:53 PM

I had never even heard of Hellboy until tonight. &nbsp This has me very interested. &nbsp Thanks for the info!

It's great to see so many people excited about reading the comics and learning about the character. Mignola is hands down my favorite artist working today. He takes folklore, monsters, nazi's, heaping helpings of Frazetta and Kirby, and swirls it all together in that wonderful Alex Toth chiaroscuro style of his. You guys have got a lot of fun, kick-ass, beautifully illustrated stories ahead of you!!
