Trailer looks mighty impressive, and, also, I hope his love for the comic doesn't get in the way of the movie.
Actually it's Dimmu Borgir, and they should be classified as *ahem* Black Metal. I know this, yet have no idea of how to pronounce the band's name. Weep for me...
they played the trailer before bad santa tonight and i thought it looked awesome. I never read the comic but I knew it was one ... I think it's gonna be a great movie. What really surprised me was them using music in the trailer from Demmu Borgir, a pretty obscure and unknown death metal band (their music is the metallic orchestray part in the 2nd half of the trailer when Hellboy punches the truck). Being the metal lover I am, it's always great to see non-Mtv-slave bands getting more exposure

Wow! I like what I see! Was that David Hyde Pierce as Abe?
And for fans of the comic,
Judging by the trailer, it sounds like Frank Welker will be doing vocal effects.

Funny. I know I've heard that song before but I've never heard of the band before.

I was just "correcting" an earlier post, I can't say if that is Dimmu Borgir or not, as I lost track of them a few years ago...

That's why The Matrix went on to be a cultural & world wide phenomenon. That's why Blade out of nowhere grossed $70 million in the states alone with an R rating, spawned 2 sequels & as an unknown comic book character is responsible for bringing back the comic book genre as a profitable movie niche. That's why Road to Perdition, American Splendor, Ghost Story & countless other movies got endless praise from around the world. You hit the nail on the head, if it's not Spider-man, Superman, or a character you recognize then it's certainly means it was only main for the rare comic book fan & certainly it has no "wide appeal".

I know this is just an opinion (goes without saying, but as a formality I mention it): Isn't film passion a subculture only slightly less widespread than comic geekdom? It boggles me that anyone involved on a chat forum for movies wouldn't be concerned solely with the artform and completely disaffected by the marketing demographic for a particular film. Dark City came out of nowhere and flopped straight on it's face, but it's still one of my favorites.
Hellboy is new in that no one has combined Marlowe and Lovecraft and on top of it been one of the best illustrators in the medium, but that's a pretty ####ing sweet combo. I'm stoked that this got made. Sitting on pins and needles for more than a year (since I heard who was greenlighted to make it) looks like it's going to be worth it.
Oh yeah. I know it's not exactly PC to say you want to be a fascist zombie in '30s style cybernetics with sulphur for blood and the butler blades from Hudson Hawk, but...well, there, I've said it. Kronen is god!

I've never read the comic, but I finally was able to see the trailer for this tonight and...HOLY SHIT!!! This looks freaking awesome. I was stunned out how good this looked - it gave me goose-bumps!
I just don't know what to say...I can't wait for this thing. Seeing the pictures on this forum is one thing, but once you see them come to life in the trailer, it's something completely different. And what a great job they did w/ the trailer, too. Finally one that I didn't role my eyes at (yes, I am referring to the piece of poop that is the Cold Mountain trailer).

How sweet was that little CGI "blink" that Abe's eyes do?
del Torro and "bad CGI" don't even work in the same sentence.
(I even like the stuff he bitched about in his Blade 2 commentary, so I'm more biased than him. Just so you know where I'm coming from.)

I am truly floored (and happy that others found good in it) by the response to the trailer for Hellboy. When it was playing, I thought to myself that it looked like some crap LXG cousin. It was one of the few trailers that I have seen recently (Honey being another, although that one had great comedic value in its badness) that I just wanted to end, end, end. And when it was over, I turned to my friend and we both agreed that was one of the worst looking movies we've seen in a long time. I'm getting into bashing mode, and I will stop...
To each his own I suppose.

Ok for one its Ghost World and it may be a comic book based movie but its not a superhero movie. Along with American Splendor and Road To Perdition and Men In Black and countless others. All those other movies had wide appeal and like other members said the movie looks to alienate non-fans of the comic book. Even Daredevil was not the box office hit the studios were expecting and I'd say he's a bit more popular than Hellboy.

I guess I am in the minority in this thread, but the trailer looks horrible to me. What are you all seeing in it? Now given that I have never read the comics so I do not know any of the background but the trailer looked like bad cgi, bad (as in fake looking) makeup, and really boring with no hook to draw me in. Am I missing something?
