Apparently the US theatrical release has at least (reported so far) 2 cuts and 1 digital erase. The Canadian theatrical release is uncut.

http://www.monkeypeaches.com/shimianmaifu.html

Spoiler:

In addition to the cut of Jin slitting the policeman's throat, they also cut the part where Jin gets back and finds Mei with a dagger in her, cradles her in his arms, and she warns him to turn around. In the movie, Jin comes back looks down at Mei and then they cut directly to a shot of Leo attacking from behind. Maybe this was done because they didn't want Mei's dying to be too protracted. I saw the movie four times yesterday and every audience liked it, except for Mei taking so long to die. The cut was probably made to appease American audiences.

In addition to the throat slashing cut and the cut where Jin cradles Mei while she tells him to look behind him, there is a digital erase on the scene where Mei pulls out the dagger. In the Chinese version, blood pours out of the wound when she pulls the dagger put, but even though Jin tells her the blood will drain, in the US Version you see her pull the dagger out but the blood doesn't pour out. The scene is intact, but they erased the blood pouring out.

This is one film the needs and deserves a terrific transfer....one that can provide the details and color.

I thought the Korean release wasn't gonna have subs, so I passed on it. :/ Anywhere else have it? Does it have cool packaging or anything?

I'm going to wait and see what the verdict is with the Korean release, that one may be the way to go.

BTW, I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but in Japan I saw flyers for the Japanese DVD release (under the title LOVERS) and there is NO mention of English subs. Too bad.

What edition are you talking about now? The only editions i see are still on pre-order. Except for the r2jp release, but there are no english subs on there.

Where did you hear it's got the same transfer? I read on another forum that it was supposed to be remastered from a new HD transfer.

"These 2,000 units's limited edition including: an individual no. certificate, bookmark (4 styles), original soundtrack, a photo gallery of making of (144 full color pages: interview of director & the cast, photo gallery & behind the screen picture), a bamboo pen."

22pounds?! Ouch. Maybe I'll wait for the Korean Limited Edition.

avbuzz confirmed that the new 2 disc release isn't that good. video quality isn't a huge improvement over the first release. once again, the audio sounds just fine.
