Re: The A24 Shop Exclusive Blu-ray / UHD Thread
I went to film school in the 1990s and shot on 16mm black and white reversal. It was neither rare nor did it have "unparalleled" contrast and grain, except perhaps in comparison to other 16mm budget stocks that a penny-pinching film student could afford.
Whatever. I can believe that a scan directly off the positive looks better than the original prints did, probably a lot better if it was rarely touched after a negative was created from it. But it still has literally 1/4 the frame area of 35mm and there's a very severe limit to how much detail it can capture, which would cap off well below 2K. An 8K scan and IMAX projection are ridiculous using that as a source. The grain particles will be larger than most viewers' heads.

Scanning at 8k might be overkill, but so what? If they're going to go to the effort of scanning the original positive, why not do it to the highest current standards? It's not like the hard drives are being stored in your garage. And we all know the UHD format is about more than just resolution. Would a Blu-ray suffice? Probably, but it's 2024. Just put out the best version possible. It's not like this is the latest in a long line of muti-dips. It hasn't been released in the US since the 90's.

Don't know why they're doing those bundles. You can buy just the discs without the book. It's way cheaper.

I had already splurged on that Talking Heads set, didn't want to do it here. Regular 4K set for me.

I'm just going to wait until Black Friday and get whatever exclusives they've released by then for 30% off... hopefully.

Probably wise. The Vinegar Syndrome store here in Toronto has most of these on display in a little alcove in the store, and while they do get attention (with most people thinking they’re just fancy books and whatnot, and moving on to the regular Blu-ray shelves), they don’t really seem to sell based on conversations I’ve heard in there. And unlike A24, I doubt a retail store can reduce them for holiday sales without maybe taking a loss. They are nice to admire in person, though. Not the kind of thing I’d collect, but I can see the appeal.

Nice. I guess I'll wait until November (or earlier) for when they have a 30% off sale for AAA24 members and grab all the releases from the year.

You can get Stop Making Sense at as reasonable a price as we're likely to get from PopMarket's eBay store. Assuming you can find at least one other title you're interested in, the 20% coupon SUMMERFUN24NOW kicks in, bringing the Blu-ray edition down to $36.96 and the UHD edition down to $40.67.
(PopMarket is a rebranded BlowItOutaHere, and they're corporate siblings with DeepDiscount, Movies Unlimited, ImportCDs, and that crowd. So very reliable and very reputable.)

That is a good price. Even at Black Friday when it’ll be 30% off it won’t be that good when you factor in the shipping costs from the direct store.

Re: The A24 Shop Exclusive Blu-ray / UHD Thread
I saw the big book versions of Stop Making Sense, Midsommar, and EEAaO in store at Walmart the other day. Surprised me to see them there, but I doubt any random Walmart customer is going to be browsing the store a drop $55 on the Midsommar 4K on a whim.
