88 Films has been killing it with their releases. I still need to watch and review Armour of God II and Murderrock on 4K:

Oh, American Reunion had me rolling, while American Pie 2 was annoying as hell. Aged horribly That's the irony of getting old.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Announced for Oct. 27 (PEACOCK KING) and December (SAGA OF THE PHOENIX). Kinda peeved that PEACOCK KING is UK only, while the sequel is UK/US. Presumably one of the American boutiques already has the rights to it, but we’ll be stuck with the usual waiting game to see if they’ll include SAGA with it, release it separately, or if a second label gets it. Oh well, at least they’re getting some attention. Incidentally, these are from the director of HER VENGEANCE, STORY OF RICKY, THE CAT, etc.

They were rereleased on Blu-rays in Hong Kong back in January as part of Panorama’s ‘Hong Kong Classic Movies’ line, and I’ve had them sitting in a couple of carts for ages but held off buying because both seemed like movies the western boutiques would grab eventually.

Skimming around social media, I see 88 has also announced:

SS EXPERIMENT LOVE CAMP 4K + Blu
THE BARBARIANS
PLAYFUL WHITE FINGERS (Pink film)
BAD CHANNELS (Full Moon)
NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH (1948)
WHO? (1974)
ELEVEN DAYS ELEVEN NIGHTS 2 (Joe D’Amato) 4K + Blu-ray

A perfect time-capsule of its era, Hackers is a movie which manages to bring together a cast who were all on the verge of stardom and created a cult favourite. Dade (Jonny Lee Miller), Kate (Angelina Jolie) and Cereal (Matthew Lillard) are a cool, tech-savvy set of “Hackers” who stumble across a criminal plan which is designed to use a computer virus to capsize a fleet of oil tankers. Will this crack team of nerds stop the disaster? With a cool, cyber-smart script and a magnificent electronic score, this is a cool film which plays like a natural successor to the 1983 computer thriller War Games.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

I’ve noticed plugs for Joe Cheung’s ROSA (1986) at a couple of places now, including Amazon, but not on 88’s own site yet. Release date is November 25, region A/B. Nice to see something a little off the beaten path. Personally, I wouldn’t call it a classic, and it’s far more episodic and sketch-comedy-ish than it needs to be, but it does have two excellent large-scale fight sequences mixed in amongst other little bits of business.

Features:
  • Limited Edition rigid slip case with new artwork by Sean Longmore
  • Limited Edition 40-page perfect bound book
  • Limited Edition premium artcard
  • Brand new 2K restoration from the original negative
  • Remastered original Cantonese monaural soundtrack
  • Newly translated English subtitles
  • Audio commentary by David West
  • Image gallery
  • Original trailer
  • More info TBA

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Just a heads-up that the 88 Films Limited Edition of THE CAT is officially sold out on their site, as per a notice on their social media. Still available at some UK retailers Amazon, Rarewaves) but obviously political issues apply if you're in the US. The only place I see that it's still available there is at Orbit for $35. I actually lost track of this one assuming the LE would probably be around a while, but I guess the film's (earned!) cult status is larger than I thought. Keep in mind that there is a standard edition coming out later this month, for those who don't need the slip and booklet.

^ That’s mirrored at MVD Shop as well.

https://mvdshop.com/products/on-the-run-blu-ray

One thing I immediately noticed that I didn't see on 88’s own site recently is a pre-order for a rerelease of ON THE RUN, one of the best Hong Kong pre-handover ‘noir’ action thrillers. They released it ages ago as LE and standard editions but only Region B as I recall, so the fact that it’s in the 88 Films listings at these sites (though not part of the sales) makes me assume its Region A (or A - B) this time, for those who might want to mark it for future purchase. Looks to be identical in terms of content, with only a slipcover/sleeve art.

Makes sense I guess, since the UK standard version is still in print. I’m glad the US version is identical, frankly. No double dipping because of exclusive content, etc.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Since I avoid social media like the plague I only just stumbled across this update from 88 Films regarding the repeatedly-delayed MAGNIFICENT BODYGUARDS 3D edition. Guess what? There’s more delays! However, they’ve apparently partnered, finally, with the 3-D Film Archive to get it done, which is reassuring.

"They said Jackie Chan already broke the laws of physics... now he's breaking the fourth wall in 3D!"

UPDATE TIME - As you may vaguely remember from a few months (or possibly several ice ages) ago, we announced a very exciting project was in the works. MAGNIFICENT BODYGUARDS 3D

And now it's official — we are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with America's acclaimed 3-D Film Archive to help unleash Jackie Chan's Magnificent Bodyguards in jaw-dropping, eyeball-popping True 3D... as good as humanly (and dimensionally) possible.

Although not Hong Kong's first foray into 3D (a distinction that dates back to 1953's The Fortune Hunters (Taojin ji) and later titles such as Dynasty and 13 Nuns (Revenge of the Shogun Women)), Magnificent Bodyguards remains one of the most ambitious martial arts productions of its era. Long confined to subpar releases, the film has remained one of the most elusive gems in Chan's early career — until now.

We have been working tirelessly on a new restoration of this kung fu landmark and are aiming to complete the restoration and grading by the 7th October, before handing it over to the 3-D Film Archive to work their "magic." Led by Bob Furmanek, the Archive has earned global recognition for restoring vintage 3D cinema to its original glory, ensuring this project will finally allow fans to experience Magnificent Bodyguards exactly as it was meant to be seen.

The past few months (years) have been insanely difficult-the film reels were scratched, damaged, and mouldy enough to make a lab coat cringe. But we have a feeling the five of you with 3D-compatible TVs are going to be absolutely blown away. Now, we just need to double-check the contract... to see if we still have time to release it before our rights expire and the film vanishes into the ether again!

Expect one more (tiny) delay as we won't hit December/early Jan that the retailers are currently listing but please support the release and keep your pre-orders locked in. The 2D version (also included) looks incredible too. We are aiming for March but should be able to confirm soon.
Elsewhere, 88 is doing the U.S. release of the excellent SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT, still available from Eureka for the UK and Europe (and already purchased by tons of people - sigh). I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot more reissues like this now. Extras seem similar to Eureka’s, minus one commentary (presumably the Djeng commentary is another do-over?)

Features:
  • O-Ring slip case with new artwork by Sean Longmore
  • 2K restoration from the original negative
  • Remastered original cantonese monaural soundtrack
  • Newly translated english subtitles
  • English Dub Option
  • Audio Commentary with Asian Cinema Expert Frank Djeng
  • Alternate English credits
  • Image Gallery
  • Original Hong Kong Trailer
  • Reversible Sleeve

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

The Protector 4K is coming in the new year.

Not my favorite Jackie movie and it's been released so many times on physical media through the years.

The R rated version and the Jackie Chan cut are both included.

In case you don't already know, Jackie and James Glickenhaus didn't get along and Jackie hated his version of the movie and decided to do a recut of it with new footage he shot. However, it was dubbed in Cantonese. It's so weird hearing Danny Aiello dubbed in Cantonese.

I have The Protector on Shout Factory BD and also have the Jackie Chan cut on the old Media Asia DVD.

  • Remastered Original Stereo Soundtrack
  • English 5.1 DTS-HD MA Remixed Soundtrack
  • Remastered English SDH Subtitles

  • Alternative “Hong Kong Version”, Jackie Chan’s recut of the film
  • Audio Commentary by Irish Film-making maverick George Clarke & Hong Kong Film Expert Mike Leeder [HK Cut]
  • Hard Edge: Brand New 2019 Interview with Director James Glickenhaus
  • Follow the Puck: Brand New 2019 Interview with Mark Irwin
  • A Tale of 2 movies with Steve Lawson: A side-by-side comparison of the HK cut and the US cut of the film
  • Archive Behind the Scenes Featurette with newly translated subtitles
  • International Trailer
  • Japanese Trailer
  • Hong Kong Trailer

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

I was wondering when we’d see that. They quietly slipped the cover image into a promo banner they created for their Jackie birthday sale back in the spring/summer but never said much else at the time. I May have posted the image in this thread back then, but it’s below too. I likewise find the HK version awkward, and much prefer the U.S. cut. The only real benefit to the HK version is the added fight scenes, which are really well done but they’re so ‘Jackie style’ that they look seriously out of place within Glickenhaus’ more straightforward crime film.
Spoiler:

Coming in February, reportedly region B only, PICTURE OF A NYMPH . Another old HK DVD and Blu on the pile!

Also, this seems to be the complete March 2026 lineup:

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Does anyone know if the Fong Sai Yuk movies are actually region locked on standard BluRay? Cuz Fight Back to School trilogy definitely wasn't region locked. Those played just fine on my Canadian ps4 and ps5 (even when they were labelled as region B).

Not sure but many newer 88 Films' discs are coded for both A and B.

I just bought the Jackie Chan collection volume 2 from Shout that has The Protector and both cuts. Not sure if I would really need it in 4K.

Just tested these in my R1 player and no dice, they’re both coded for Region B as per the packaging. There is a solution for that, of course. (Otherwise, I suppose the Shout set is the main alternative, but you may not need the other films).

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

A semi-update from 88 Films today for 2026. Yet another Jackie Chan upgrade, although doing it from the OCN is nice to hear. Presumably it’ll be a combo box with a Blu-Ray like the others they’ve been re-doing. Can’t tell if the Pink Panther 4Ks are the movies or the cartoons, but considering that Kino has already upgraded the former, maybe it’s the latter, although I don’t really understand any need to upgrade those toons to 4K.

This is the clip they mention above:

I suppose Pink Panther is the live action films I've never been able to get into and not the cartoon series I grew up watching?

That third title is almost certainly Zeder. Lizard in a Woman’s Skin might fit #2. Any other guesses about the rest?

I assume one of the "T_R" titles is The Young Master, which unless I'm forgetting something is the last "good" Jackie Chan movie left for 88 to upgrade.

Edit to add: I forgot about The Fearless Hyena. That could be another one on the list. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Twin Dragons are other "good" Jackie titles without a UHD, but I think those are outside of their normal Fortune Star licenses and they may not have access to the necessary elements to do 4k.

The Pink Panther live action films (or at least some of them) were just released by Kino in UHD. Makes me curious as to what these will be.

AMAZONIA might fit the first mystery title. They previously released that on Blu-ray in their ‘Italian Collection’. I don’t believe the title has been released on anything other than the old Shriek Show DVD in North America (and in a triple feature box from them), so I suppose if people have been dying to see it this would be a region-friendly option versus the Blu. Just do your research first, maybe!

- - - - -

Almost forgot: stumbled across this on their social media last week and meant to post it here. These three titles are getting North American releases, apparently the first ‘wave’ in a bunch of older Golden Harvest titles. Collectors of actual Hong Kong physical media might remember these from various companies back in the day, most notably the Joy Sales / Fortune Star ‘Legendary Collection’ in silver slipcases with the die-cut windows for the poster art to show through (sample at YesAsia). Shout previously released a bunch of titles from this line/era in various multi-film sets (Martial Arts Marathon 1 and 2, Jimmy Wang Yu Collection, Angela Mao Collection) which kinda felt like afterthoughts put together in order to get at the higher profile titles in the library, like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee stuff. I don’t recall any of these three being available, but I’m guessing that 88 might reissue some of the OOP Shout titles down the road if these are US exclusive.

Listings at MVD Shop:

THE HIMALAYAN

INVINCIBLE EIGHT

THE ANGRY RIVER

Some more April releases plugged in today’s email, all UK editions so likely region coded (except the 4K). THE PROTECTOR contains the U.S., Hong Kong, and Japanese versions of the film.
