Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Some June 88 titles are up. PING PONG is a pleasant surprise (not that the other two are slouches!). I still have the old HK DVD of that, and the Viz Video US DVD still floats around pretty cheaply, but might grab the Blu cheap some day.

These pics are right from their email, so the links don’t actually work (most go to Amazon UK anyway).

I can’t find lists of bonus features for PING PONG or ARMOUR OF GOD but I assume the latter will port over all the existing stuff from prior releases.

Extras for PAINTED FACES:

Audio Commentary by HK Cinema Expert Frank Djeng

The Art of Movement - An Interview with Actress Cheng Pei-Pei

Tony Rayns on Painted Faces

88 Films is releasing In the Line of Duty 1 through 4 as smaller set.

I believe the last one that came out a few years ago went out of print.

^ Their hard shell box set with the same artwork went OOP fairly quick, but later they did four individual releases with slips, and later without. Pretty sure those are all still in print, but this is a better value of course. Prior to all of these, Eureka released them in as UK-only editions. These four are starting to feel a little long in the tooth now with so many trips to the well. Based on this new 4-pack, I’m betting we’ll see a similar repackaging for the four INSPECTOR WEARS SKIRTS editions. I suspect those have been slower sellers as they lean more toward comedy-action than the ITLOD movies, which has always made me wonder why they didn’t just do a four-pack from the outset.

88 also announced some other UK editions this morning. The films in the Shaw triple feature were all in Shout’s Shaw Volume 4 box. SEX & ZEN II is nice to see. 88 released the first one a while back (as did Shout in their GH Supernatural Shockers box). Really wish these would be collected in a trilogy set, but alas . . .

I missed the 1st release of In the Line of Duty. I kept waiting for it to drop below $50 and it never did and went out of print.

Hopefully I will be able to get this one at a reasonable price.

I believe the rights to the Inspector Wears Skirts films are held by multiple parties and contractually 88 were not allowed to package them together.

^ That would explain it. Far too many Hong Kong movie ‘series’ are affected that way, sadly, which means cobbling together a ‘collection’ however we can, if we even can.

At least 88 was able to ‘theme’ them together with the new artwork, so there’s that.

Now, if only we could get the ‘other four’ ITLOD movies in a set, but I suspect the fact that one of those was similarly put out by a different company probably makes that a no-go.

Armour of Gods coming to 4K in July

I noticed that it doesn’t mention the Miramax version that has Jackie’s own English dub. Does that even exist anymore outside of $5 bargain bin DVDs? I know it was confusingly released in America as a prequel to Operation Condor.
