This label should have a thread here. They have been putting out a lot of awesome Jackie Chan releases. Between them and Eureka there have been so many great Hong Kong releases coming out. If you’re Region Free, I highly recommend checking out.

88 films about 44 women?

My copies of Snake In The Eagle's Shadow, Double Team and Maximum Risk are in transit as I write this. Can't wait!

I remember when 88 Films first announced they were releasing Crime Story and The Protector. I was a little bummed because the Fortune Star licensed Hong Kong floodgates had opened up in the UK with Eureka releasing the Police Story, Project A and Once Upon A Time In China collections and (given their history with HK films up to that point) I thought no way would 88 be able to do as good a job as them. To quote Obi-Wan, "I was wrong." So wrong that I now wish 88 could go back and do some of those early Eurkea titles themselves. Now, the dirty little secret with these titles (if you can call it dirty) is that it's actually a small group of fans, most of whom are active over on that recently resurrected other site, that are doing the grunt work on both of those labels' releases. So in that sense, the quality is pretty equal. However, 88 just seems to go the extra mile with artwork and packaging and all of the little details that make these so great. The Young Master might be one of the best blu-ray releases I've seen for any movie ever. I think I've bought every 88 release of a HK movie since those first two I mentioned. I even bought the crappy early Jackie titles like Spiritual Kung Fu and New Fist of Fury. I'm probably going to skip Erotic Ghost Story and maybe Forbidden City Cop as they're not really my thing, but I eagerly look forward to whatever is next.

All that said, I have two primary quibbles with these releases. The first is pretty minor, but I just wish 88 would author in the ability to resume play on these discs. I have no idea what goes into making that feature possible, but it drives me crazy every time I have to stop a movie. The second quibble is with the subtitles. As I mentioned before, 88 is relying on fans to supply new translations. This is awesome because Fortune Star's supplied subs are usually only 'ok', and having watched these movies for years, I know how much accurate subtitles can improve the viewing experience. However, I find that these fan translators skew a little too far towards "everything must be 100% accurate". I want my subs to read naturally and sound like something an actual person would say. The overly literal translations sometimes read like an academic paper. They may be more "correct", but sometimes the flow and the feeling of the dialog is lost. I'd gladly sacrifice a *tiny* bit of literal accuracy for a more pleasant reading experience. I will say that they've improved a bit a since these releases started, but either way, what we have is 1000x better than what we would have gotten from the license holders.

I have to agree about the subtitles on some of these releases, although I likewise understand that the overeager fan translators are not only making up for Fortune Star's so-so subs, but also other, possibly different and even worse, subs that appeared on theatrical prints in various markets. But its so much better when the translator can then go one step further and properly distill the essence of the translated Cantonese into something that reads like an English speaker would speak, something that still has a natural flow to it. I'm curious to see what they come up with for FORBIDDEN CITY COP because literalizing Stephen Chow's Canto-specific wordplay could turn into one big eye-sore for the reader of literal English subs.

I've got all of the non-Shaw HK titles from both companies so far. I'm interested in EROTIC GHOST STORY (despite having a couple of HK discs), but I can't understand why they didn't just release the whole trilogy. The second and third films are both good movies, but at this point in time they make more sense bundled together as a set even though they can be enjoyed as standalone titles.

Looks like the next few Hong Kong releases are:

I think the days of me buying all of these has come to a hard stop. Story of Ricky is what it is. It's fun, but not something I'd watch multiple times. I'd never heard of Robotrix. It seems like a schlocky delight but with the added caveat of multiple brutal rape scenes. Anyone seen that one? On the other hand, Chinese Boxer is day one.

It seems like they are moving into doing a line of Category III films based on the little logo on the spine of some of the upcoming titles. I don’t think I’m too interested in those either.

Chinese Boxer though... I will get for sure.

It's not surprising as the Cat III stuff is for sure more in line with the rest of their catalog. However, as someone who doesn't really care for the rest of their catalog, I can't say I'm all that excited about it.

These Amazon leaks are really taking the wind out of their sails. I wonder where Armour of God is though? Figured we see that one sooner rather than later.

More Chang Cheh is always welcomed. However, I already have the Tokyo Shock dvd of Flags of Iron and the German blu of Disciples. Improved subtitles will probably be enough to get me to upgrade, but neither was a huge priority for me. What I really want is for someone to put out some of the early 70's Iron Triangle films like The Duel, Vengeance and The Blood Brothers.

I have to assume that's some sort of contractual requirement, but I don't want to look up the original poster because I want to believe that after a dozen Van Damme blu ray releases, 88 just wanted to shut up all the people upset because they thought they were getting a Rob Van Dam movie.

Got my most recent batch of 88 blus. I'll readily admit that Maximum Risk and Double Team were spur of the moment throw-ins to help justify the cost of shipping. 88 recently started requiring tracked shipping on all international orders due to customer complaints of missing packages. I never once had a problem with my non-tracked orders, but I get where they're coming from. They're a small operation and I want to support them.

Can't wait to dive into Snake In the Eagles Shadow. I'm interested to see how they edited the snake/cat fight. I get why the law is in place, and I don't have a strong desire to see animals hurt, but I'm kind of of the opinion that cutting it out of the movie isn't going to change something that happened 40+ years ago. Hopefully it's done well.

Finally, I've enjoyed most of the new artwork by Kung Fu Bob, but this one in particular is just spectacular.

Watched Snake In The Eagle's Shadow last night. Overall it's a nice package, which shouldn't be a surprise given the work 88 has been doing. The cat/snake fight was handled fairly elegantly. It's almost completely cut, but in a way in which the meaning is not at all lost. It is so short now that it's almost a blink and you'll miss moment, which sort of underplays how key a moment it is in the story, but given the constraints with which they had to work, it's hard to knock it. However, I do have some other complaints:

1. The quality of the Cantonese audio is pretty bad. The higher frequencies are beyond shrill and distorted. Most of the time it's fine, but there are moments (especially when the awesome techno theme fires up) where it can be fairly uncomfortable to listen to. I haven't gone back and checked my old Columbia DVD (nor do I have any of the other blu-ray releases), but I have to assume that this is just what Sony has. I know Sony was being a little more strict with 88 about what materials they could and couldn't use as compared to the Fortune Star titles, so maybe this is just the best we're ever going to get.

2. With regards to the subtitle complaints I expressed a few posts up, for the most part, these new subtitles were fine. There were 2 or 3 awkward phrasings that I just don't understand why anyone wouldn't reword to sound more like a normal person, but whatever. My biggest complaint is with the last line of the movie. For those unfamiliar, Jackie and Simon Yuen are discussing Jackie's new Snake/Cat style kung-fu after he uses it to defeat the villains. Yuen tells him he doesn't like the name "Cat's Claw" (or for the benefit of the subtitles, "Snake Form Cat's Claw") and suggests instead the name "Se Jing Diu Sau," which Jackie agrees is better and declares to be the new name for the style. Movie ends. I don't speak Cantonese, so I have no idea what "Se Jing Diu Sau" means literally, but I do know that this is the Cantonese title of the movie. The English title is obviously "Snake In The Eagle's Shadow". The conceit here is that Snake Form Cat's Claw is kind of a clunky name and that "Se Jing Diu Sau" is cooler and also gives Jackie a chance to proudly announce the title of the movie as it ends. However, in the new subtitles "Se Jing Diu Sau" is translated as "Tricky Snake Form Hand". I have no doubt that this is an accurate translation, but the intent of the line is completely lost. You're right Simon Yuen, "Snake Form Cat's Claw" is kind of an awkward name for this awesome new kung fu style that just dominated the Eagle's Claw. But you know what sounds even less cool? "Tricky Snake Form Hand". Not only that, but 99% of the audience wouldn't even realize that this is the actual Chinese title of the movie. The exchange, which should be the final triumphant cap to a great movie, is instead just kind of awkward and confusing. This is more evidence that literal accuracy shouldn't always be the ultimate goal. At least not in my opinion. I have the utmost love and respect for the work that 88 and their cadre of superfans are doing on these releases. They have overall been a revelation and I don't want this train to stop anytime soon, but pretty much every single one of these releases from 88 and Eureka have had a moment or two like this. This one just stuck out more because it was literally the summation of the movie in one line.
