Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Just noticed some January titles that haven’t been mentioned here yet. Only the first one appears to be a Region A / B release; the others are all Region B:

LOVE AND CRIME (Japan; 1969)
(featuring the real Sada Abe, no less)

LOVE UNTO WASTE (Hong Kong; 1986)
(or as it’s been called on every HK release ever, Love Unto Wastes. Also, really not digging some of 88’s sleeve art these days)

ROUGE (Hong Kong; 1987)
(already on Criterion)

HAUNTED HOUSE OF HORROR (UK; 1969)

STORY OF A CLOISTERED NUN (Italy; 1973)

I enjoyed 88 Films' release of The Shadow Boxing (aka Spiritual Boxer II) with Gordon Liu in the cast. Maybe not the most action-packed Shaw Brothers, but there's great comedic energy in the lead cast. Nice-looking transfer and a cool slipcover. Could have added more special features but still a fun movie.

The special features have dwindled on some of 88’s releases (and even some of Eureka’s I think). Aside from trailer or still galleries, LOVE UNTO WASTES (above) has none, nor do KUNG FU INSTRUCTOR, KID FROM KWANTUNG, TO KILL A MASTERMIND, GOLDEN LOTUS and FACETS OF LOVE. Honestly I don’t miss them in terms of the time requirement, but I do wish they’d lower the prices a bit since they’re not spending as much to produce them in that regard. A lot of Hong Kong movies, even good ones, don’t need the whole ‘double commentary with four commentators’ routine that has become the norm. Maybe these guys are tiring out repeating a lot of the same info from one disc to the next? A lot of these movies were literally entertainment for the working classes of HK and the diaspora back then. They’re good, often great, but they weren’t intended as works of world cinema art and they don’t need lengthy discussion. Sometimes a trailer and still gallery is enough, although I’d have been a little more satisfied with a short, simple video essay for all of the ones above, just for a little context.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

I was about to post the new list, but Dex just posted too. Might be worth noting that the list includes Nic Roeg’s FULL BODY MASSAGE with Mimi Rogers, and his CASTAWAY with Oliver Reed.

Also, PINOCCHIO 964 is on US Blu from Media Blasters, and soon on 4K as well:
https://diabolikdvd.com/product/4k-p...-uhd-preorder/

AMOROUS WOMAN OF TANG DYNASTY was around 90+ minutes on the HK DVD, but was apparently around three hours originally. Looks like 88 just has the short version. Nice to see another departure from action stuff in HONG KONG HONG KONG from 1983, which looks at the struggles of illegal mainlanders in Hong Kong. It has light erotic overtones, but is a top notch drama regardless. Kind of a shame that Kani / Vinegar Syndrome got MAYBE IT’S LOVE because both of these films starred the sexy Cherie Chung and would’ve made a nice double-feature, or a multipack with some of her other Shaw stuff like TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR, HONG KONG PLAYBOYS, DECENDANT OF THE SUN, SALT AND PEPPER. Wouldn’t be surprised if these two – which are the best of the bunch in fairness – are test runs to see if a double or triple feature would float later on.

An optimistic Gwok Zan-Waa (Jackie Chan) arrives in Hong Kong, quickly finding himself impoverished. That is, until a serendipitous encounter with a rose seller (Gua Ah-Leh) leads to his inadvertent appointment as boss of a local gang. Amidst the reluctant leader’s efforts to reform their fraternity and businesses, is an endeavour to share his new-found fortune with the bestower, all whilst trying to stave off rivals and the authorities. A remake of Frank Capra’s ‘Pocketful of Miracles’, Miracles - also known by its Hong Kong English title ‘Mr Canton and Lady Rose’ - is an action-comedy-romance set against a backdrop of lavish elegance and style now remastered in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision and featuring both the Theatrical and Export Versions.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Limited Edition DUAL FORMAT Special Features include

• Brand-new 4K restoration from the Original Camera Negative presented in Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR10 Compatible)

• 4K (2160p) UHD presentation of the Original Hong Kong cut (Mr Canton & Lady Rose - 127 mins) and the International cut (Miracles aka Black Dragon - 107 mins) in original 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio

• High Definition (1080p) Blu-rayTM disc also included

• Remastered Original Cantonese Mono Soundtrack

• Alternate Cantonese Mono Soundtrack featuring a unique mix and different music cues

• Cantonese Mono - Home Video Mix

• Cantonese 5.1

• Newly-translated English Subtitles and SDH [optional]

• Classic English Dub for the International cut with optional SDH

• Audio Commentary by Frank Djeng and F.J. DeSanto [HK Version]

• ‘Teaser’ with clips from the main features of ‘Project A II’, ‘Police Story 2’, followed by behind-the-scenes of ‘Miracles’

• Scenes From the Taiwan Version

• Alternate The Canton Godfather title sequence

• Jackie Chan: Film Director Featurette with Steve Lawson

• Hong Kong Teaser

• Hong Kong Trailer

• Japanese Trailer

• Japanese TV Spot

• Stills Gallery

• Double-sided sleeve featuring original Hong Kong art

• Presented in a rigid slipcase featuring new artwork by Sam Green, and containing perfect bound book illustrated book featuring new and archive articles by David West, Paul Bramhall & William Blaik, art cards and double-sided poster

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Vinegar Syndrome just released a Blu-ray double feature of SEVENTH CURSE and WITCH FROM NEPAL, so naturally it stood to reason that 88 Films, which released the former in a solid limited edition and then standard edition some time ago, has the latter on tap for later this year. And similarly to their SEVENTH CURSE edition, their artwork for WITCH – again by Sean Longmore – blows away the rather weird and poorly laid out VS art.

I stumbled across this while roaming around online, but I don’t think there’s an official date or supplements yet. Expect more double dipping from the commentarians, of course.

Apparently they’ve also got DEVIL FETUS (1983) and HER VENGEANCE (1988) in the hopper, the latter from the director of SEVENTH CURSE, STORY OF RICKY, and PEACOCK KING. Looking forward to upgrading both of these from my old Joy Sales ‘Legendary Collection’ DVDs. They’re both pretty over the top (and both Cat. III, although DEVIL FETUS predated the rating and received it retroactively). HER VENGEANCE is up there with WOMEN ON THE RUN in terms of WTF value, in my personal opinion (and arguably, of course)

With Miracles (my favorite JC film) coming to 4k... by region-free Blu player is slowly becoming destined to be a doorstop.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

New titles for May. Some of these have been on the retail sites for a few days, so I was hoping 88’s official email announcement would include specs and supplements, but I guess we’ll have to wait. The interesting one among these (for John Woo fans, anyway) might be SUNSET WARRIORS, the “director’s cut” of HEROES SHED NO TEARS, which has already had umpteen Blu-ray releases, with 88’s previous edition containing a bonus featurette comparing the two, albeit with shoddy footage from the original. Their FB post didn’t mention which region coding these will be have, if at all.

I don't like to yuck other peoples' yum, but do the American _____________ films really have that much of a following still? I've only seen the first one but once you see the pie gag, is there really anything else that memorable about them?

Crime Story is a really underrated Jackie Chan movie from the 90s. I'd like to get that one on 4K eventually.

There are 9 films in the series. 4 were theatrical and American Reunion in 2012 was the final one with the original cast.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pie_(film_series)

No one talks about the series anymore, but they all did well financially.

But, keep in mind, this release is for the UK market.

Have you seen the garbage that some of these boutique labels put out? The current bar for a deluxe Blu-ray release is so far below a series of wildly popular studio comedies, even if they're not culturally relevant in 2025. I'm not sure anyone was asking for the DTV sequels, but again, these labels are scraping the underside of the barrel at this point.

And further to that, it’s worth noting that 88 is now putting out 90’s Charles Band movies.

Just noticed that one of the American Pie releases contains the DTV sequels which I have seen all of them probably maybe at least 2 times each. I actually think it is great they are getting an HD release, but I also wish that the release came with digital copies. I might actually pick up this release sometime this year. I also agree with you that many of the titles being announced as of late are not films I had any clue existed or particularly great (including the AP DTV films), but I do love some of the covers for these releases (such as the Nepal Witch cover, that woman is gorgeous!).

It has been a minute since I picked up an 88 Films release, and on the advice of someone in another thread (or maybe this one) I picked up a blu ray player that allows me to choose the correct region to play certain Blu Ray releases so I can buy any blu ray out there even if it is not only coded for NA Blu Ray players.

The AP DTV films are kind-of guilty pleasures for me to watch.

I suppose so, I just wonder if it's worth the ROI to do the restorations and whatnot.

And as for what else these labels release, a lot of it is horror (and some sci fi) which I know a lot of folks (myself included) will "grade on a curve" so even something with a less than perfect plot can still be fun if the performances, FX, setting, etc are interesting then the movie can still be enjoyable. Personally I don't see how that would translate to a sex comedy, but different strokes and all that.

My favorite of the American Pie DTV movies is Beta House as it flips the script on formula of Revenge of the Nerds and the Nerds are the Bullies. Im glad they had enough sense to leave out "GIrls Rule" as its a trash movie.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

June stuff has been announced, all for June 23, presumably UK for now. Happy (of course) to see a couple of pretty extreme Hong Kong Category III titles on the list with HER VENGEANCE and DEVIL FETUS, as noted in post #406 above, with trailers (also, these two are supposedly coming as a double feature from Vinegar Syndrome in March). And after all the hubbub and praise over their PROJECT A COLLECTION boxed set, I was hoping they might do the same with the ARMOUR OF GOD films, but no luck (presumably a rights thing for the U.S.?).

GATE OF FLESH was a Criterion DVD once upon a time, so I wonder if it’s still with them on these shores (?).

MURDEROCK isn’t great, but can be low-rent spandex-y fun in the right frame of mind, and the U.S. Blu-ray appears to be OOP now, so I expect we’ll see another boutique get that if this one isn’t region-free. The ZEBRAMAN films are . . . different. Saw the first at TIFF, and the second on video. Not sure why they couldn’t have been paired together, to be honest.

Since these announcements are my main source for movies I haven’t seen before and find interesting, I found and watched Her Vengeance. Parts of the film (talking about the look here) seem rough, like some scenes got inserted in.Anyway, I found some similarity to The Bride Wore Black, of all things . It kicks into gear , maybe the last 40 mins and features a plot point that maybe isn’t that common.

It took me awhile to realize the main actress , even though I’d seen Rich and Famous in the past month or so.

There are multiple versions of this film, including one rated Cat. IIB, the other Cat. III, and I believe different media formats yield different versions of those! Knowing HK films, it wouldn’t surprise me if there are alternates from different regions, too (don’t quote me on that). I’m honestly not sure which of the two main ones was best represented on which format, but I recall my old HK DVD feeling kinda ‘splicey’ at various spots, and with inconsistent film quality, like I wasn’t getting the whole show. The Cat. III and Cat. IIB have significant story differences as well. The 88 edition will apparently have the most complete Cat. III version anywhere – which I’ve read over the years is pretty strong stuff – as well as the Cat. IIB version on its own. As for what you saw online, and my old DVD, it’s a safe bet both are incomplete.

Incidentally, HER VENGEANCE is a remake of a 1973 Shaw Bros. film called KISS OF DEATH, and I wouldn’t be BRIDE WORE BLACK was an ancestor of both (I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is often mentioned in reference to the newer film). Image Entertainment put out a solid DVD of KISS OF DEATH millions of years ago but no sign of it on Blu, which is one of the reasons I wince a little each time a new Shaw box comes out full of more period martial arts films. There’s so much more. Sigh.
Amazon Amazon

There are a lot of HK Cat. III films that need serious reconstructive surgery like this. I’ve got a few in my collection where there are little differences between the VCD and the DVD, and then I’ve read about even more differences on the LD and VHS that I rarely had chances at getting. In this sense, I’m grateful to the much more obsessive HK fans than myself who are able to piece all this stuff together, especially in an era when no Hong Kong company will bother apart from, presumably, providing materials or maybe assisting in the search.

I was just digging through a couple of big totes of old VCDs here the other night, and it’s absolutely staggering the number of lesser-known Cat. III stuff that I have, and yet compared to the full list of such titles, I’m lucky if I’ve got a quarter of them. I do miss the hunt sometimes . . .

I’ll probably get the 88 edition at some point (damn I wish they’d do more sales), and maybe the VS version if there are significant differences in extras. Based on VS’s art for their WITCH FROM NEPAL / SEVENTH CURSE double feature – which looked like borderline AI compared to 88’s editions, one of which is posted above), I’m keeping my expectations limited in that regard.

Interesting that Sunset Heroes will also include the Heroes Shed No Tears cut. I believe when it was originally announced, 88 (or one of their contractors) was saying that this would be a separate release from their original Heroes Shed No Tears disc and wouldn't include that version. I assume disc 2 in this new set will be the exact same disc as the original release.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

^ Comparing the specs and extras on disc two with the original release, everything lines up. It’s probably for the better that they put the old disc in the new sets so we can have all three versions of the film in one package, but I guess my older version is redundant now.

I also compared the Blu-ray in the CRIME STORY combo set (and standalone Blu), and they’ve added a commentary, for what that’s worth. Not sure I’ll upgrade since I don’t do 4K, but their slipcase + book editions are nonetheless tempting.

It also looks like the new OPERATION CONDOR combo set (no standalone Blu) has more special features than their original release, including an additional commentary, extra interviews, and various trailers and TV spots missing the first time around. Sigh.

Re: The Official 88 Films Blu-ray Thread

Niiiice . . .

But man, my wallet!

For those unfamiliar, it’s the (to date) final picture from Lam Nai-Choi (or Nam Nai-Choi as he’s sometimes billed), the director of SEVENTH CURSE, HER VENGEANCE, PEACOCK KING, its sequel SAGA OF THE PHOENIX, EROTIC GHOST STORY, and STORY OF RICKI. If you got a kick out of those, you’ll probably get a kick out of this as it rivals them well in the WTF department.

Out August 26.

An adaptation of the novel Old Cat, by Ni Kuang. A cat from outer space teams up with a young alien girl and her knight, along with an adventure novelist named Wisely, to fight a murderous alien that possesses people.

What follows is an over-the-top combination of body-swap delirium that leans more toward a Hong Kong adaptation of The Hidden than The Cat from Outer Space, but with touches of The Thing, Spaced Invaders, and Aliens! The Cat is an overlooked gem from the golden age of the VHS trading underground, completely remastered and packed with extras.

Next Jackie Chan upgrade for September: HEART OF DRAGON. I don’t see this on their site, but it’s listed at various retailers. Aside from the 4K discs, it appears to contain the same supplements as previous Blu editions from 88 and Arrow. It looks like another hard box edition (maybe?), so it would presumably include the usual book, poster, lobbies, etc.
