If you've watched some shows that have been transferred from 1:33 to 16:9 you'll see a difference in the framing, -you lose information at the bottom and top of the screen.

Only if they were filmed in 1:33 and reframed entirely to fit 16:9. When it's filmed in 16:9, only Super35 shit requires cropping.

I've seen a season or two in 16:9. It looks fine - less claustrophobic (unlike Ryan's intentions, I guess), but fine.

That asshole's "intentions" are the reason it took 2 fucking years to remaster for blu-ray. Holy fuck it looks terrible on DVD. It's like watching VHS on a 4K screen. You can barely make out who's who on some of the earlier seasons.

If Shawn Ryan claims he wants it in 16:9, he’s changed his tune from the original days when he said he framed it for 4:3.

Pretty sure the same thing happened to The Wire too.

At least in the case of The Wire, David Simon acknowledged that reformatting the show for 16:9 was a compromise that HBO forced upon him. He had to work very hard to make the best of it and adjust the framing scene-by-scene as needed.

WOW! Whoever setup these discs was an asshole. There's no fucking "Play ALL" option on the BDs. Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?

Amazon Amazon

Back down to $118.99 after jumping up to $130+

I want this set, especially for the new 4K BD transfer, but I have a feeling if I jump in now, it will drop to under $100 eventually. I'd like to hold out until this drops below $100, but man it's tempting. It's 48% off MSRP. I don't really want to spend $100+ on some BD set post-Christmas. But what's the likelihood this goes down more? Decisions-Decisions.

It’s Mill Creek. It’ll be cheaper. Way cheaper. No point in spending money now to have it sit on the shelf.

Re: The Shield -- The Complete Series -- 11/6/18

Very true. Plus, I just dropped $600 on a new computer to replace one that recently died. Probably not a good idea right now to spend that kind of money just to "have it" I probably wouldn't even watch it right away. I guess I'll hold out.

I'm watching them in HD on HULU. I am curious about the special features but not enough to buy it. I am curious to see how they side step discussing Michael Jace in any capacity.

It was $102 on ImportCDs. B&N had some deal that made it about the same too.

I bought 2 copies, but I'm going to end up watching the torrent because there's no fucking Play All option on the discs.

Has now dropped to $109.

I'm hoping for $75-90 before I consider picking it up.

I ended up returning my extra copy. Fuck Mill Creek for not putting a "Play All" option on each disc.

Really? What and why? Stuff that's on the DVDs?
I was this close to buying this, but if it's missing anything significant, I'm out!

There’s a hefty discussion about it on the Blu-ray.com forum. It seems Sony gave Mill Creek the international versions which were different from what aired on FX. Mum and the series finale being examples. There’s even links to reddit where Shawn Ryan has replied to say he is looking into it.

Hi all. Shawn Ryan here. Was alerted to this thread. My understanding is/was that everything on this Blu-Ray release was going to be as it originally aired on FX. I will definitely be looking into this, though with the holidays it's very possible that I might not be able to get some answers until next week. I can assure you that nothing was intentionally done to change/censor any scenes. Since the early 2000s there has always been some confusion as the FX versions and Sony versions (for international release) were occasionally different for time purposes (and perhaps content purposes, though I was never told of this). I have been battling these differences for awhile. For instance streaming had the longer two part Series Finale that we had to create since International wouldn't accept the very long running time of the finale that ran on FX. I insisted that this new Blu-Ray go back to original FX Version. Will be back here with answers when I have them.

Oh man, what a clusterfuck!

At least Ryan's looking into it, but even if they fix it - it would take a while to get the different elements sorted out, transferred, etc Like, more than a year.

Re: The Shield -- The Complete Series -- 11/6/18

Had a discussion with a friend who just purchased this set & claims the audio from the first few seasons (so far) is "fake" 5.1 & is basically mono.
He ripped the audio from one of the episodes in season 2, ran it through Audacity & sent me a screenshot. This definitely does not look right to me. Looks like all of the audio is in the center channel.

Re: The Shield -- The Complete Series -- 11/6/18

I've seen some people talking about audio issues like that on the Blu-ray.com thread too. Add to that the issues with some content being cut on "Mum" and I'm glad I held off on this set.

Mill Creek was apparently given the International version of the episode by Sony and it snips seconds of footage from the oral rape scene.

Shawn Ryan was apparently unaware that this happened.
