I think it looks great! Looks like the Deadwood set, which kept the discs perfectly safe, and was a handsome book/collection to boot.

Pretty sure it'll be 16:9, but it was protected for that, so you won't be missing anything. Put mattes on the side of your screen if you have to.

There would also be some cropping at the top and bottom. As you, said, though, they insist that they shot it with 16:9 in mind, so I'm not overly concerned.

They don't crop for 16:9 unless they shoot in fucking Super35.

I'm not sure I believe that story. During its original run, Shawn Ryan resisted letting the show be broadcast in HD because he wanted to maintain the "gritty," low-res aesthetic. He had the opportunity to switch to 16:9 HD but refused it even as most of FX's other programming made the transition.
