Picked up the exclusive from BB. The box looks fine to me and it was $1 cheaper than the other extended release.

Roc, the extended Jinx SE fight is a lot better, and happens earlier in the movie, and IMO sets up the story better. There are also more shots of Cobra Commander, which is always a good thing.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

I got the Target 3D version today for 21.36 after cartwheel and Red card. It comes with a code to get "The Legendary Wolverine" feature at TargetTicket.com. That's the only exclusive content for this release, right?

I'm not certain that the extended cut is really the first version of the movie originally scheduled for release in 2012, as some people have claimed. I think it may be a new hybrid cut that reinstates parts of the 2012 version into the 2013 version.

I'd heard stories about how the studio demanded reshoots to put more Channing Tatum in the movie after poor test screenings. But the eventual theatrical cut doesn't have any more Tatum than the extended cut. In fact, the extended cut has one additional scene with him and a short extension to another.

How's the extended duel between Jinx and Snake Eyes?
The scene itself is much more coherent than the theatrical cut, but it drags on too long IMO, and has more of The RZA, which is definitely a bad thing. It's been moved up to right after the opening credits, where it really disrupts the flow of the movie. I prefer the way the theatrical cut opens, even if that scene suffers later.

That storyline, where Jinx constantly has to prove herself worthy of Snake Eyes' tutelage over and over again, also makes Snake Eyes look like kind of a dick. I suspect that's why it was cut from the theatrical version.

We're really getting off the subject of The Wolvering here.

Spoiler:

That's disappointing that it isn't a digibook, I was looking forward to that. That BB packaging is nice but I don't need a big box just for a hand full of lobby cards that I'll look at once and then just be in the way every time I pull out a disc.

Looks like I'll just stick to the 3D Blu-ray. Truth be told, I like that cover art better anyway.

That looks cool but it's stuff I'd look at once and then forget forever. Just got the regular set from Amazon. Fantastic A/V quality.

I was a little bummed out that none of the panels from the limited-series didn't make their way into the documentary. I can't boast to anyone, "I got that issue!"

Extended cut did feel a little better than the theatrical, btw.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

Anyone getting audio dropouts on the 2D extended cut? I was getting tons of very quick drops both with my player decoding and sending through multichannel analogs (no HDMI on my preamp), and through optical and letting my preamp decode the core. Oppo 83 sending to an older Emotiva preamp.

Great movie, even with the dropouts pulling me out of it every few minutes. I also really enjoy the Best Buy set. I love the artwork on the back of the lobby cards that combine to make one long image. I may end up putting them together and framing them somehow. They seem to be the perfect size and shape to be a topper for my X-Men: Wolverine LE pinball machine. Just have to double check the ceiling clearance...

FYI, The Wolverine will be $17.99 for 2D and $22.99 for 3D at Best Buy next week. Not sure if that includes their exclusive version though.

A 3D review with some pointed comments about the 3D effects:

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

This review paints a more positive picture of the 3D conversion.

The Wolverine's conversion to 3D is an often quite artful affair, though some may think they've mistakenly put in the 2D version as the film gets underway and there's a decidedly flat view of the waterside at Nagasaki. That soon changes as the camera pans right and a guard tower of the prisoner of war camp comes into view and is clearly placed in the foreground. Some effects that one might expect to be spectacularly dimensional—like Logan in his "prison tube" or even the nuclear explosion itself in the opening sequence—are curiously compressed, but just as often more subtle moments, like a long metal railing Mangold pans across in the funeral scene or even the many scenes in traditional Japanese homes where paneled screens offer built in planes and frames of reference, significant dimensionality is achieved. What may irk some 3D aficionados is how dark the film tend to be, especially in its latter third, which is when one of two huge set pieces plays out. This darkness automatically robs the image of depth and dimensionality and seems to work against the very setting of this climax, which is full of huge towers, protruding catwalks and other phenomena that would seem to be the perfect building blocks for a great 3D experience. One kind of odd thing about this presentation—pay attention to the difference between the rain sequences and the snow sequence. When it rains, there's one sheet of rain pouring down in the foreground, with seemingly nothing going on in the background. In the snowy sequence which sets up the climactic scene in the mountaintop fortress, it's a much more organic, natural looking presentation, with flakes of snow clearly in different dimensional planes.

It's nice that the 3D version came in a black Blu-ray case.

Thanks to Joltman for the mention about Cartwheel . I grabbed the last 3D copy @ Target along with my usual groceries. Good food (Crab Ravioli) and good movie

Yep, on the 3D set only. The extended cut is on a separate disc.

CGI blood/impalements, two additional F bombs, a few minor scene extentions, and a really badass scene with a snow plow.
