The Wolverine - December 3

The Wolverine Snikts a December Blu-ray Release

Unleashed Extended Edition available in 3D Blu-ray version only.

by Max Nicholson

October 1, 2013

Listen up, bub. The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, will debut its 4-disc Blu-ray Unleashed Extended Edition, 2-disc Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on December 3, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The Unleashed Extended Edition will include the highly anticipated extended, unrated cut of the film -- a first in the entire X-Men film franchise. The bad news? This version is only available in the 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD release. The same goes for the director audio commentary, which is also exclusive to the Unleashed Extended Edition.

Here's the breakdown, along with a list of special features:

The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition (3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD):
•The Extended, Unrated Cut - The first for the X-Men franchise!
•The Wolverine UNLEASHED - More violent and hardcore than ever before.
•The Path of the Ronin - An immersive feature following the journey of a hero without a past.
•Alternate Ending
•Audio Commentary by Director James Mangold (only on the Unleashed Extended Edition)
•Sync with The Wolvering Second Screen App for an interactive Second Screen experience.
•X-Men: Days of Future Past Set Tour
•Theatrical Trailer

The Wolverine (Blu-ray):
•The Wolverine (theatrical version)
•The Path of the Ronin - An immersive feature following the journey of a hero without a past.
•Alternate Ending
•Sync with The Wolvering Second Screen App for an interactive Second Screen experience.
•X-Men: Days of Future Past Set Tour
•Theatrical Trailer

The Wolverine (DVD):
•The Wolverine (theatrical version)
•Inspiration - A Ronin's Journey

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

This movie surprised me with how much I liked it. I didn't think that it was exactly perfect but it was fun for what it was. I'm in for a copy for sure! Really like the cover art for the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy version too. Bull shit about the extended cut only being on the 3D version though.

Yeah, I could give a shit about any of the other features, but boo to including the extended cut only with the 3D version.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

Does this mean the extended cut is only in the 3D format (meaning if I haven't upgraded I can't see it) or is it included on the regular Bluray format just have to buy the whole set?

No, the extended cut is a 2D BD with the 3D set.

The regular 2D BD does not have the extended cut.

Extended only with the 3D purchase is kinda BS.

Is "The Wolverine UNLEASHED - More violent and hardcore than ever before" some sort of a short? I ask because they list it as a separate bullet point from the Extended Cut.

I hope the 2D disc has both cuts of the movie. I know it's a different company but I'm pissed that Paramount had only the extended cut of Hansel & Gretel on the 2D disc since the theatrical cut was far better. I hope Fox doesn't follow that pattern.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

The director has said on Twitter the extended cut is on the 2D disc, NOT the 3D.

Though i'm surprised so many people are reacting like this is another ST: Into Darkness situation. It's nothing like that. This is the same thing they did for John Carter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and Conan.

Yeah its annoying you're paying a little more for a 3D disc you'll never use, but its not like we have to get buy from 3 locations the same film.

A little annoying that the 3D version will be the one I have to get, but if they can knock out a sale price around $25, I'm probably in.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

How was the 3D conversion of this? I saw it theatrically in 2D because that's all my local theater had. While watching the movie, the only thing I could imagine looking good in 3D was the bullet train sequence.

Not to be contrary, but unless I completely missed something in the past, John Carter and Pirates 4 only had extra bonus discs of content for the 3D blu-ray sets and not exclusive extended cuts of the film. Didn't follow or get Conan, so don't know about it.

I'm guessing most people are used to the occasional exclusive supplements on the 3D blu-ray sets but not extended cuts of the film.

I'm going to just get the 3D version to get the extended cut. I've probably already got 20-30 3D movies without a 3D tv yet just from exclusive content like this and/or coupons that lowered the cost of the 3D sets down to the same as 2D. This'll just be another one.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

I'm surprised that they are pressing 2 different blu disc. I really thought from hearing about it at first, it would be the extended on the 3d disc, and the 2d that came with it would be the same as the regular blu set.

Pretty annoying to me, hate that I have to buy the 3D version to get the extended cut since I hate 3D and will never bother with it at home.

Re: The Wolverine - December 3

Looking at the first post, that information is referring to the 3D set as 4 Discs and the regular Blu-ray as 2 Discs.

It also says "Includes 2 Versions: Theatrical and Unrated Extended Cut" at the bottom of the cover. However, it could mean that the Theatrical is only on the 3D disc or that the Theatrical is only on the DVD.

Both include digital copies so that shouldn't account for an additional disc in the 3D set. Therefore, it seems like the 3D set might include a 3D Blu-Ray, the Theatrical Blu-Ray, the Extended Cut Blu-Ray, and the DVD + Digital Copy disc.

I'd also bet that since the Blu-Ray version refers to what sounds almost like a WB Maximum Movie mode, one of the Blu-Ray discs will be the exact same as the 2-disc version with only the Theatrical Mode because of this feature.

The Extended Cut will probably be on its own disc, featureless. That's my guess at least to make it easiest for the company, authoring-wise.

Sucks that you have to waste extra money on a gimmick disc to get the extended cut.

I meant though in terms of special features/commentary only being included among the 3D version of the film, not so much a specific extended cut.

Yes, and that's a huge difference to most of us who are complaining about it.

It just feels like another scheme by the studios to get people to buy something they don't really want, in this case a 3D Blu-ray to get something that they'd include pretty much regularly on any other release. If this film hadn't come out in 3D at all and would have been released on Blu-ray there would likely be one release that contained the regular and extended cuts. Whatever I'll probably end up buying the 3D disc if it's cheap enough but it still kind of irks me when studios pull crap like this.

I've bought some Disney 3D versions because they ended up cheap after coupon, but with the SKU's here and Fox, I'm guessing I'll be stuck paying $3-5 more to get that extended cut

Right, but also, they've never really put any special features on the actual 3D disc. It's always just the movie. And the stuff we really want is always on the 2D Blu's. The only real annoying thing is having to buy that 3D disc and then what to do with it afterwards.

Thankfully, you don't have to buy a 3D TV to actually watch any of the special features.

eBay. Plenty of people unload them there. I had a co-worker who'd constantly buy individual 3D discs from eBay.
