Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Watched the Kino disc of DYNASTY a few nights ago, and it's another winner from the 3D Film Archive, and a marked improvement over what I saw theatrically over a decade ago (and that was actually pretty decent). Based on the before/after images Bob Furmanek showed on Kickstarter (and presumably other social media), they've really pulled off a miracle here. The disc notes some baked-in anomalies that couldn't be fixed; this seems mostly to be small black specks that appear on one of the strips but not the other, so they're kinda half-noticeable, but not overly distracting. A few of the 3D pop-outs have always been a bit dodgy, but the vast majority do indeed come into the room; a near constant barrage of thrusting swords, staffs, fists, rocks and bodies. At first, it feels like the colour leans a bit brownish, but then you quickly realize that so many Taiwanese pictures of the era seemed to be shot during seasons – or in locations – where the grass and foliage seemed starved for water. In close-ups here thanks to the HD scan, you can see plenty of green blades of grass poking out of all the dead ones. The martial arts battles are a blast, and make use of unconventional weapons (like robes that can be turned into staffs and whizzing boomerang thingies); the villain's battle with the monks, the deep-forest fight between the hero and one of the villain's most aggressive goons, and the extended final battle on the mountainside – where the greens really pop, finally – are all a ton of fun and make giddy use of the 3D space. The soundtrack is English dubbed only, and it's from the same gang that did so many kung fu movies in that era: lots of awkward pauses and odd phrasings to approximate the lip movements of the original actors, but you just know the finer points of the story are lost to the ages. Subtitles are dubtitles – no biggie, though, since I doubt an original Taiwanese print of this film even exists anymore. The soundtrack music seems to be library cues or otherwise unconnected to the film itself; an early, extended shot of a court musician playing a yangqin (I think?) is accompanied by a cacophonous piece of what seems like generic Chinese opera music. Beggars can't be choosers, I guess.
They've included a great bunch of extras as well: - The House of Terror - Restored 1953 3-D Comic Book: this displays two pages side-by-side at a time, in black and white, at 5-second intervals, so you need to pause to read it. Reading was fine on my 60". Might be a bit tricky on smaller screens.
Two Stereo Slide Presentations: "Sold on Stereo, Commercial 3D in the 1950s" and "Inside a Mid-century Department Store": these are both fascinating, particularly the latter, which consists of photos commissioned to celebrate the grand opening of a monster department store in the 1950's, with shots of nearly every department. Both have accompanying commentary.
"Go Away I Like You Too Much" 3-D Music Video from The Simple Carnival by Jeff Boller: this is a nicely designed animated show with spherical 'characters' moving through vector-style backgrounds. Cute and lightweight, like the song.
Super-Touch Lens System Featurette: this is short but thoroughly-researched visual essay on the unique 3D system created by exploitation filmmaker Michael Findlay, who didn't live long enough to see it put to use thanks to the infamous Pan Am Building helicopter crash in 1977. Turns out the system, or some variation of it, was used beyond the two Taiwan pictures, with the final project being Paramount's THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE. I'd forgotten all about that one.
All in all, an excellent package for a nearly-lost film. Can't wait to get REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN, which has even more pop-out effects than DYNASTY. I'll happily contribute to the Kickstarter again.

I don't get it either, and I kinda grew up watching those old "kung fu theatre' travesties on Detroit TV in the 70's and early 80's. Even at that age it didn't feel right, and I always felt there were significant plot details inherent in the original dialogue and gestures that wasn't making the translation because the dubbers just didn't care back then; it was all about making films more palatable to western ears. I knew this would be English-only, though. Bob Furmanek made that clear early in the Kickstarter. It was really a case of working with the only source they could find, possibly the only one in existence. For that reason, and the extras, it's still worth picking up.

My understanding is that they could only get the licensing for the US release version, which was dubbed, and I think also edited. There's some edits where it seems like certain shots, typically decapitations, get cut short.
Looking up the original title, 千刀萬里追 , there doesn't look to have been a release in China/Hong Kong/Tawain on DVD or Blu-ray.

There's a key decapitation near the beginning that's blink-and-you'll-miss-it short, and does indeed seem edited. There's a bunch of decapitations during a later fight – using flying guillotine-style chained weapons with bladed claws on the end of them (great 3D here!) – that are probably edited, too, but if so it doesn't hurt the impact of the sequence: the claw flies out of the screen repeatedly, cuts to a shot of the victim struggling with it around their neck, then instant cut to the claw/head flying back into the screen. It's pretty cool, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was bloodier in the original version. Oddly, there's another fight where a combatant continues fighting after his hands have been chopped off, and that doesn't feel cut at all, very bloody. But who knows. I doubt we'll ever see an Asian disc of this film at this point, let alone in 3D, so this is as good as it gets, I suppose.

Geez, my Dynasty 3D finally shipped. It seems like forever I ordered, prior to release. Not even available on Amazon anymore. Hope it’s worth it. But, seems odd such limited to Amazon. Never had a problem with these before, but should have it tomorrow.

For some of us it's the 3D. For some of us it's the story. Me, I go for the 3D, 'cause some just don't have a story...and that's okay.

Happy to see GODZILLA VS. KONG getting a 3D Blu release. Didn't think they'd bother, but there's life in the format yet! Amazon's listing notes it's a Warner Archive release. Is that a mistake, or are all Warner titles being released that way now? Haven't been keeping up.

anyone get Godzilla vs. Kong? Mine still waiting to depart from Amazon. Ugh. I’ll give it another viewing chance, don’t think I saw G: KotM in 3D. I assume so. Don’t think I saw this in theaters and didn’t care for it however I saw it and had to have in 3D. maybe 3D will be better experience for GvK. I assume this was post conversion? Only Kong: Skull Island was pretty effective in 3D.

Kind of a surprise- Random Space Media in Australia is releasing Jumanji: The Next Level on 3D Blu-Ray after Sony snubbed it worldwide. Pre-ordered it at:

Definitely some strong 3D in this one. As always with these conversions, it’s all about depth but they designed some spectacular sequences to take advantage of that. The scene where Kong floats through the gravity-free zone (or whatever) in hollow earth, with the rocks fanning out toward the camera, is a real standout, and there are other little gems like that. The monster battles are pretty solid in 3D too of course, very well choreographed and staged (even though seeing Hong Kong so badly destroyed certainly reads like a metaphor to me). I have issues with all four movies in this franchise – mostly with the human characters, especially the ridiculous conspiracy-theorist “heroes” on display here – but this one is probably my favorite, or at least on par with SKULL ISLAND.

I placed an order for the Blu 3D Jumanji and was considering Mr Mercedes. Shipping for Jumanji to US was around $7.50 USD. And I have Discover card linked to Paypal and will get 5% cash back on that.
