Severin Films today announced the full list of Special Features for their release of Russ Meyer’sVIXEN, SUPERVIXENS and BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTARAVIXENS. The nine hours of Severin-curated bonus materials shine a spotlight on each film’s historic critical and commercial success, nationwide censorship battles and notoriety as landmark American independent films. Hailed by The San Francisco Chronicle as “a pop visionary,” Meyer’s legendary trilogy – each making their Worldwide UHD/Blu-ray Premiere – is being released in collaboration with The Russ Meyer Charitable Trust from negatives restored by The Museum of Modern Art and Severin Films.
VIXEN includes an all-new audio commentary and on-camera interview with long-elusive star Erica Gavin, as well as a new featurette on the film’s historic Cincinnati court battles. SUPERVIXENS boasts a never-before-seen archival interview with actor Charles Napierof THE BLUES BROTHERS fame and the U.S. disc premiere of the 1988 Russ Meyer episode of Jonathan Ross’ The Incredibly Strange Film Show. BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRAVIXENS – co-written by Meyer and Pulitzer Prize winner Roger Ebert– includes an archival interview with star and latter-day Russ muse Kitten Natividad, plus Meyer’s infamous 1979 appearance on a Tucson talk show. All three films feature revealing archival audio commentaries by Russ himself, who passed away in 2004.
The trilogy will also be available as part of The Russ Meyer Super and Ultra Bundles, both of which feature archival treasures from the Estate – many discovered in Meyer’s home office – that include vintage promotional items, original RM Films International business cards, exclusive new ‘Bosomania’ t-shirts, VIXEN VHS sleeves signed by Erica Gavin, classic soundtrack LPs signed by Russ Meyer and much more.
“In addition to our unprecedented restorations, these Special Features and Limited Edition Bundles collectively comprise a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of Russ Meyer’s legacy,” says David Gregory, co-founder and CEO of Severin Films. “The entire Severin Team is enormously proud of our ongoing efforts to honor Russ Meyer the man, the First Amendment warrior and the American filmmaking legend.”
Russ Meyer's VIXEN.
Amid the cultural chaos of 1968 and armed with a budget of only $70,000, producer/director/cinematographer Russ Meyertranscended sexploitation by crafting this “bosomacious melodrama” (Time Magazine) about racism, communism, bush pilots, draft dodgers and a ferociously free-spirited wife named Vixen (the incredible Erica Gavin of BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and CAGED HEAT). Despite attempts at censorship that included one of the first-ever X ratings and 23 separate U.S. prosecutions for obscenity, it became one of the year’s top-grossing movies, forever transformed independent film and remains the creative template for Meyer’s unapologetic vision of American cinema. VIXEN is now scanned in 4K from the original negative restored by The Museum of Modern Art with over 3 hours of new and archival Special Features curated by Severin Films in conjunction withThe Russ Meyer Trust.

Russ Meyer's SUPERVIXENS
Following the ‘serious’ features THE SEVEN MINUTES and BLACK SNAKE, this 1975 return to form written, photographed, edited, produced and directed by Russ Meyerremains perhaps his most over-the-top and savagely entertaining epic of all: When a hot-blooded wife (Shari Eubank) and a psychotic cop (a startling performance by Charles Napier ofTHE BLUES BROTHERSfame) come together, it will ignite a cross-country odyssey of violence, vengeance and relentless coitus. John Lazar (BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS), Uschi Digard(BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS) and Haji (FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!) co-star in Russ’ “super-sexy live-action Road Runner cartoon” (Empire), now restored by Severin Films in conjunction with The Russ Meyer Trust and scanned in 4K from the original negative stored at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Russ Meyer's BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRAVIXENS
The final feature produced, photographed, edited and directed by Russ Meyer is a wicked take on Our Town, co-written by Meyer and Pulitzer Prize winner Roger Ebert(BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS). Russ’ latter-day muse Francesca ‘Kitten’ Natividad stars – along with Uschi Digard, Ann Marie, June Mack, Candy Samples and Russ himself – in this unwashed look at Small Town, U.S.A., complete with faith healers, war criminals, bosom buddies and the loin-girding quest for sexual salvation. Because the original elements for BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRAVIXENS had been stored in less-than-optimal conditions, Severin Filmsdevoted months to the painstaking restoration of its weather-damaged negative before scanning it in 4K and compiling over 2 hours of new and archival footage, all with the blessing and cooperation of The Russ Meyer Trust.

RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR
Having depicted the zombie apocalypse in HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD, director Bruno Mattei and screenwriters Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi took on a new kind of cataclysm to create “a grotesque, funny and thrilling magnum opus” (Daily Dead) that still must be seen to be believed, especially in UHD: In the year 225 A.B. (After The Bomb), a gang of scavengers discovers a seemingly abandoned city – including sets originally built for ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA – only to become prey for millions of flesh-hungry rats. Ottaviano Dell’Acqua (ZOMBIE 3), Massimo Vanni (ROBOWAR), Gianni Franco (THE WAX MASK) and Geretta Geretta (DEMONS) star – with a classic ‘80s Italian horror score by Luigi Ceccarelli (NOSFERATU IN VENICE) – in “Bruno Mattei’s masterpiece” (Senseless Cinema), now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative for the first time ever, with 3 hours of new & archival Special Features and a Bonus CD of the recently discovered/remastered soundtrack.

SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD
After creating some of the best gialli of the ‘70s, director Sergio Martino (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) entered the cannibal cycle with this “blood and guts gorefest” (Trailers From Hell) that “still packs a punch” (Rock! Shock! Pop!) and is presented in UHD for the first time ever: When a British scientist disappears in the jungles of New Guinea, his wife (Ursula Andress) hires an American anthropologist (Stacy Keach) to lead her deep into a green inferno of graphic violence, steamy nudity and several of the most notorious scenes in the entire genre. Claudio Cassinelli (THE GREAT ALLIGATOR) co-stars in what Daily Grindhouse hails as “ROMANCING THE STONE for deviants,” nowscanned in 4K from the original camera negative with over 3 hours of Special Features that include a new interview with Martino.

What began as the epic global zombie apocalypse screenplay VIRUS by Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (SHOCKING DARK, ROBOWAR) became – via the inimitable vision of director Bruno Mattei (CRUEL JAWS, RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR) and a fraction of the original budget – this “gloriously ludicrous” (Confluence of Cult), “compulsively watchable” (Classic-Horror), “infamous zombie-chomp spectacular” (Braineater), now in UHD for the first time in America: When a top-secret biomedical project accidentally unleashes a catastrophic plague, a four-man commando team and a female reporter head into the jungle for an “absolutely insane” (B&S About Movies) experience in gratuitous nudity, grisly stock footage and ravenous hordes of flesh-eating zombies. Margie Newton (THE ADVENTURES OF HERCULES), Franco Garofalo (THE OTHER HELL) and a soundtrack ‘borrowed’ from Goblin star in “a must for all fans of Italian exploitation” (Cinezilla) – also known as VIRUS, NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES and ZOMBIE CREEPING FLESH – now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative.

Looks like it was Thomas Spurlin. I remember reading about Delicatessen in Fango, but, alas, I haven't seen it myself (yet?).

I've got the Studio Canal UK 4K of Delicatessen and Severin's is sourced from the same print, so I will pass on it.

A welcomed upgrade. The current disc is very much showing its age, and it's very appreciated to see Italian audio this time.
***SEVERIN BLACK FRIDAY TITLE REVEAL #8***
NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS
THE WORLDWIDE UHD PREMIERE
For far too long, this 1974 shocker directed by Aldo Lado (WHO SAW HER DIE?) has been dismissed as a LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT knockoff. Now it can be experienced as a classic “more intense and disturbing than the film that inspired it” (DVD Talk) in UHD for the first time ever: When two young girls taking a train home for the holidays encounter a pair of sadistic thugs, it will trigger a nightmare of sexual brutality and parental revenge. Flavio Bucci (SUSPIRIA), Irene Miracle (INFERNO), Macha Méril (DEEP RED) and Enrico Maria Salerno (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE) star – with a powerful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone – in this “damn fine film that stands on its own merits” (Screen Anarchy) – also known as LAST STOP ON THE NIGHT TRAIN, THE NEW HOUSE ON THE LEFT, SECOND HOUSE ON THE LEFT, DON’T RIDE ON LATE NIGHT TRAINS, LAST HOUSE PART II and XMAS MASSACRE – scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with over 5 hours of Special Features.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread
Just noticed that was Reveal # 8, so I had to find out what #s 6 and 7 were!
#6 is Ruggero Deodato’s LAST CANNIBAL WORLD (aka JUNGLE HOLOCAUST; 1977) in 4K + Blu, which was previously on a Code Red Blu-ray. (and a word of warning that the movie contains some really nasty animal cruelty; the trailer doesn’t)
#7 is Lina Romay’s (and possibly Jess Franco’s) THONG GIRLS (1987). I generally hate Franco movies from this period, and this is allegedly directed by Romay, which might be even worse (?), but that title is kinda irresistible. Well, in a sale down the road kind of way because the few reviews of it online claim it’s fairly tame.

New Severin web store exclusive: FEAR IN THE PHILIPPINES: THE COMPLETE BLOOD ISLAND FILMS.
These are re-releases from the OOP box sets, double-featured on discs in a space-saving single case. Sounds like some (?) may have visual upgrades, but with these films I’m not sure it matters.

Moving along faster than I expected with these
.
One thing that struck me kinda late about the five releases so far is the absence of participation from Jimmy McDonough, the author of the absolutely essential Meyer bio ‘Big Bosoms and Square Jaws’. I thought for sure he’d (eventually) be involved in some of these, but looks like he’s MIA, perhaps on purpose? Odd considering how involved he was with Indicator’s lavish box set for the Ormond family films, which dovetailed with his book about them.

Announcing the UHD/Blu-ray Premieres of two more landmark films from the vaults of iconic American auteur Russ Meyer: 1965’s action-and-violence saga MOTORPSYCHO and the erotic comedy RUSS MEYER’S UP! co-written by Roger Ebert. Both titles have been restored and scanned in 4K from their original negatives with hours of new and archival Special Features curated by Severin Films in association with The Russ Meyer Trust and are now available for pre-order!
MOTORPSYCHO
Just prior to FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!,producer / director / co-writer and cinematographer Russ Meyer first unleashed his singular vision of full-throttle violence and vengeance with this 1965 shocker: When a trio of psycho bikers launches a sexual assault and murder spree in a desert town, the local veterinarian (Alex Rocco of THE GODFATHER fame in his screen debut)teams with a rage-ravaged vixen (the incredible Haji in her own first film role) to settle the score. Steve Oliver (WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS), Lane Carroll (THE CRAZIES), Timothy Scott (THE FARMER) and Russ himself co-star in this “slick, violent and well made” (Variety) Meyer milestone, nowscanned in 4K from the original negative restored by The Museum of Modern Art with new and archival Special Features curated by Severin Films in association with The Russ Meyer Trust.

RUSS MEYER'S UP!
No fairy tale…this! In 1976, producer / director / cinematographer/editor Russ Meyer delivered his penultimate feature film – co-written by BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize winner Roger Ebert – hailed as “jaw-droppingly perverse” (Entertainment Weekly), “Meyer at his most outrageous” (Images Journal) and “definitely not to be confused with the Pixar cartoon” (The Spinning Image): Welcome to a sex-blasted burg in Northern California where sodomized Führers, ravenous piranha, sapphic ecstasy, murder mystery, Shakespearean appropriation and the remarkable Raven De La Croix collide, with Kitten Natividad – in her RM Productions debut – as The Greek Chorus of it all. Janet Wood (THE CENTERFOLD GIRLS) co-stars in “one of Russ Meyer’s best films” (We Are Movie Geeks), now scanned in 4K from the original negative by Severin Films with new and archival Special Features curated in association with The Russ Meyer Trust.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread
Now this is a deep dive into obscurity. I’ve heard bits ‘n pieces about this guy for years, but never really got to see any of his stuff. This SOV stuff can be hit and miss – as anyone who’s stocked up on Vinegar Syndrome partner titles can attest – but packaged together like this is certainly takes on a Clones of Bruce kind of appeal.
BLOODY LEGEND: THE COMPLETE CLIFF TWEMLOW COLLECTION

BLOODY LEGEND: THE COMPLETE CLIFF TWEMLOW COLLECTION

Severin Films honors iconic Mancunian filmmaker Cliff Twemlow with BLOODY LEGEND: THE COMPLETE CLIFF TWEMLOW COLLECTION. This unprecedented 10-disc release from Intervision Picture Corp. – Severin’s showcase label for shot-on-video classics – embraces the DIY spirit of the ‘80s SOV revolution and honors the mini-media empire forged by Twemlow.
Cliff Twemlow was a nightclub bouncer, composer, novelist, actor, filmmaker and unsung ‘80s U.K. legend. For more than a decade, the unstoppable Manchester native – along with a devoted team of local doormen, martial artists, variety performers, models, girlfriends, gym friends, family members and B-listers – created his own low-budget shot-on-video empire via a bollock-bashing oeuvre of gangster films, horror movies, spy thrillers, sci-fi epics and beyond. This first-ever Intervision Picture Corp. box set brings together every film by “The Orson Welles of Eccles” – including his infamous Section 3 ‘video nasty’ G.B.H./GRIEVOUS BODILY HARM – sourced from their original tape masters, as well as 2023’s “sweet, moving, and very, very funny” (Deadline Hollywood) documentary MANCUNIAN MAN: THE LEGENDARY LIFE OF CLIFF TWEMLOW directed by Jake West, plus unfinished projects, over 13 hours of Special Features, a CD featuring Cliff’s music from placements that include DAWN OF THE DEAD and much more.
Pre-orders for BLOODY LEGEND: THE COMPLETE CLIFF TWEMLOW COLLECTION – along with The Bloody Legendary Bundle that also includes new paperbacks of Cliff’s memoir The Tuxedo Warrior and his novels The Pike and The Beast of Kane – start now at the Severin Webstore.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Severin Films conjures candelabras, crypts and cobwebs – and again summons definitive presentations of four Italian Gothic Horror classics – with DANZA MACABRA VOLUME FOUR: THE ITALIAN GOTHIC COLLECTION featuring TERROR-CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE, NIGHT OF THE DAMNED, THE DEVIL’S WEDDING NIGHT and BABA YAGA,availablein both an 11-disc UHD or 7-disc Blu-ray collection.
Queen of Italian Horror Barbara Steele stars in Massimo Pupillo’sgrisly TERROR-CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE, presented in both its U.S. and Italian versions. Director Filippo Walter Ratti meldsclassic gothic tropes with explicit ‘70s sexuality in NIGHT OF THE DAMNED. Mark Damon and Rosalba Neri consummate the ultimate Satanic mayhem in THE DEVIL’S WEDDING NIGHT from director Luigi Batzella and cinematographer/2nd unit director Joe D’Amato.AndHollywood legend Carroll Baker stars in Corrado Farina’s pop art erotic shocker BABA YAGA that includes the first-ever CD release of a Piero Umiliani soundtrack compilation. Wow, so they have Baba Yaga. Hopefully it will get a standalone release. I have the BD from Blue Underground.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread
The first Danza Macabre set that I've got some big interest in! I already got Severin's TERROR/GRAVE as a singular release and I wasn't crazy about Baba Yaga, but I've been willing to give it another look since I haven't seen it since netflixing the BU disc waay back when. I remember having a great time with Night of The Damned (It flirts with so-bad-so-good on many occasions) and I still can't believe they're passing off Devil's Wedding Night as "Satanic"! It's a vampire movie, goshdarnit!

I’m curious about their Blu of the Hong Kong picture FEARLESS DRAGONS, not because it’s the classic they seem to be making it out to be – it’s not – but because they actually name-check the studio independent behind it, Goldig Films, as being “iconic”. It’s not, but it does have modestly sizeable and somewhat eclectic catalog of films (martial arts, contemporary comedies and romance dramas, crime thrillers) that I’m now wondering if Severin has bought access to. Considering the company’s titles are generally mid-tier, I’d prefer to see them doled out in batches (doubles, triples, budget boxes, etc.) than selectively dribbled out on standalone releases, but such is the market I suppose. Who knows, maybe FEARLESS DRAGONS is just a one-off.

KILL LIST
The award-winning 2011 breakthrough film from writer/director Ben Wheatley (A FIELD IN ENGLAND, IN THE EARTH) has been called “dark and disturbing” (Empire), “creepy and very funny” (Austin Chronicle) and “furious, shockingly violent and sensational” (Time Out London). It will now blow you away like never before in UHD for the first time ever: When an on-edge family man and unemployed contract killer (Neil Maskell of Hijack and BULL) accepts a new assignment of 3 separate targets, the list will drag him to the edge of madness and plunge him into the depths of Hell. Michael Smiley (THE LOBSTER, CENSOR) and MyAnna Buring(THE DESCENT) co-star in the mindblower that “will leave you stunned, breathless and in need of a stiff drink” (Screen Anarchy), scanned in 4K from the 35mm digital intermediate negative with over 6 hours of new & archival Special Features.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread
Oooh, Summer Sale starts soon and they will have a bundle deal on the shark films which I only really care about because they come with soundtrack cds which is neat. Might bite on this bundle deal, pun very much intended.
ETA: Ugh, my job is a bit shaky at the moment and shark films would run me over $100 w/shipping so I may have to be patient and just wait until they really are on sale at a future date (maybe around Black Friday or the Holiday season in general).
Still tempted because I really do not spend a lot of money on other frivolous stuff.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread
Aside from the Hong Kong picture, the shark movies caught my eye too. In fairness, I’ve never seen an Italian shark movie that wasn’t shitty (most of them in a bad way), but Severin certainly goes all in on the sleeve/slip art (and bonus content somewhat, including those CDs), to the degree that I didn't realize at first that I’d already bought and watched MONSTER SHARK when it was called DEVILFISH on the 2018 Code Red Blu-ray, which had a commentary and interview with the lead actor that remain exclusive to that edition. Despite that one being dreadful, I’m still curious about Severin’s other two shark offerings here, even though I’ll hold off on them until a future sale.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread
Yeah, I skipped the shark set. Those movies can be unwatchable and not even fun. They exist better as clips or trailers. I felt I got burned by the "Cruel Jaws" set I bought when it was released. Good news was I got my money back and more since I had the limited Jaws 5 slipcover version. I am surprised they haven't slapped that on a 4K disc and release it yet with that Jaws 5 cover again. They would make their investment back pretty easily.
But I did pick up the Shark! book. It looks pretty cool and unique. I am a sucker for books like that.
Shark! Book – Severin Films

I also picked up the limited-edition Baskin release with the book. That movie is batshit crazy and one of my favorite horror movies of the last decade.
