New batch is up for April:

SUZZANNA: EMPRESS OF DARKNESS Features 5 Films + Suzzanna Documentary; JESS FRANCO: FROM BANGKOK WITH BULLETS Brings Rare Pair of Francos; VOICES FROM BEYOND is Penultimate Fulci Film in 4K

Severin Films’ 20th anniversary celebration continues with three new releases that once again deliver what Screen Anarchy hails as "a constant deluge of rarities and forgotten gems that are being given deserved treatment for the first time." SUZZANNA: EMPRESS OF DARKNESS brings together the North American Disc Premieres of 4 classic films from Indonesia's Ultimate Horror Icon – PACT WITH THE FORCES OF DARKNESS, WHITE CROCODILE QUEEN, MALAM SATU SUROand KLIWON FRIDAY NIGHT – plus her final feature GHOST AMBULANCE and the award-winning Severin documentary SUZZANNA: THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC directed by David Gregory; JESS FRANCO: FROM BANGKOK WITH BULLETS highlights two of the famed filmmaker’s rarely seen 1985 action-adventure romps filmed partially in Thailand; and the Worldwide UHD Premiere of VOICES FROM BEYOND, the penultimate shocker and “worthy finale to his career” (Morbidly Beautiful) from writer/director Lucio Fulci in a 3-disc collection with a Bonus Stelvio CiprianiSoundtrack CD.

SUZZANNA: EMPRESS OF DARKNESS

Suzzanna portrays a regal reptile empress and her mortal twin sister in the wild WHITE CROCODILE QUEEN. MALAM SATU SUROand KLIWON FRIDAY NIGHT both star Suzzanna in her most famous role as the grisly ghost of feminist vengeance, Sundelbolong. And in the “fascinating” (Cinapse) Severin Films documentary SUZZANNA: THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC, director David Gregory peels back every startling layer of her controversial life, death and legacy. The 4 Soraya Productionshave been scanned in 2K from their original camera negatives in English-friendly versions for the first time ever in America, with over 3 hours of Special Features that include revealing interviews, expert analysis and Suzzanna’s final film, GHOST AMBULANCE.

JESS FRANCO: FROM BANGKOK WITH BULLETS

In 1985, writer/director Jess Franco briefly stepped away from horror and erotica to focus on several adventure thrillers that combined elements of his earlier Eurospy and Fu Manchu hits with his sardonic wit and love for exotic settings. But having no budget for foreign locales, he instead sent cinematographer Juan Soler to Thailand to shoot a few days of exteriors which became the foundation for two of Uncle Jess’ most surprising – and rarely-seen – Spanish productions of the decade: In The Worldwide Blu-ray Premiere of TRIP TO BANGKOK, COFFIN INCLUDED, Francoverse legend Howard Vernon stars as a cantankerous British agent on the trail of a creepy cult leader. In The Worldwide Disc Premiere of BANGKOK, DATE WITH DEATH, Jess unleashes a pop-art crime spree of pirates, kidnappers and kung fu killers starring his beloved muse Lina Romay. Both films have been scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives, complete with all-new appreciations by Stephen Thrower and Parts 14 & 15 of In the Land of Franco, hailed by Mondo Digital as "Severin's ongoing featurettes that now constitute the most intensive and valuable survey of a filmmaker's locations in history."

VOICES FROM BEYOND

The penultimate film from writer/director Lucio Fulci – in ill health and likely knowing the end was near – is “the highlight of his twilight era” (Mondo Digital), “a classic return to the formula that made his earlier work so incredible” (Blood Sucking Geek) and presented in UHD for the first time ever: When the scion of a wealthy family dies under shocking circumstances, every heir has a motive for murder. But will the restless spirit of the deceased now seek vengeance from beyond the grave? Karina Huff (THE BLACK CAT), Pascal Persiano(PAGANINI HORROR) and Lorenzo Flaherty(Private Crimes) star – with a juicy cameo by the maestro himself – in “the movie that shows Fulci could still do it” (Horror Cult Films), co-written by Piero Ragnoli (BURIAL GROUND) from a short story by Fulci with gore effects by Pino Ferranti (CANNIBAL FEROX, HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD) and a score by Stelvio Cipriani (A BAY OF BLOOD), newly scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with over an hour of Special Features and a Bonus Soundtrack CD.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Severin posted a couple of previews today. Looks like the doc has already played some fests, but it would be cool if they were releasing the original film itself down the road.

Not mentioned in that second trailer, but Sangster’s directorial efforts were: HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN (1970), LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1971), and FEAR IN THE NIGHT (1972). All three were previously released on Blu-ray by Shout.

This popped up in my YouTube feed. FACE WITH TWO LEFT FEET was put out on DVD by Code Red years ago. Not sure about the other two.

^ More details about the disco set today:

DISCO ITALIANA

From the country that brought you Sharksploitation, Nunsploitation and Indiana Jonesploitation comes the white-suited subgenre that stayed alive for less than 18 months. Severin Films is now struttingly proud to resurrect this trio of Italian Discosploitationclassics, on disc for the first time ever: AMERICAN FEVER, starring Mircha Carven, Zora Kerova and co-written by George Eastman/Luigi Montefiori, boldlyconfronts a young man’s disco dreams. The deliriously cheesy GREASE ROCK fearlessly blends comedy, action, drama, surreal dance-offs and non-stop music. And in the now-restored Complete Version of JOHN TRAVOLTO: THE FACE WITH 2 LEFT FEET, Giuseppe Spezia – who bears an uncanny resemblance to the American star – goofily pursues disco DJ Ilona Staller (aka adult star/politician Cicciolina) with a little help from his friends. All three films in this collection have been scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives and include 5+ combined hours of Special Features plus a JOHN TRAVOLTO Bonus Soundtrack CD.

AMERICAN FEVER

The very first Italian Discosploitation film is also the closest in tone to SATURDAY NIGHTFEVER, thanks in large part to its smart screenplay co-written by George Eastman/Luigi Montefiori (ANTHROPOPHAGOUS, ABSURD): Mircha Carven (SS EXPERIMENT LOVE CAMP, DEATH WILL HAVE YOUR EYES) stars as Tony, gas station attendant by day and king of the Rome discos at night. But Tony’s dreams of becoming a movie star in America are complicated by his best friend’s deepening debt to loan sharks, his growing relationship with an ambitious beauty (Zora Kerova of CANNIBAL FEROX and TERROR EXPRESS) and the cold-hearted realities of the Italian film industry. Gianni Medici(FANGS OF THE LIVING DEAD) co-stars in this surprisingly grim drama directed by Claudio Giorgi (A MAN FOR SALE), now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative for the first time ever.

Disc 1: AMERICAN FEVER

Special Features:
  • Audio Commentary With Film Historians Nathaniel Thompson And Howard S. Berger
  • All About The Music: The Birth Of Disco And The Road To Italy's AMERICAN FEVER – Interview With Alan Jones, Author Of Discomania: Fantastic Beats And Where To Find Them
  • Trailer

  • Audio: English Mono, Italian Mono
  • Subtitles: English SDH, English
  • Region A
  • Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1

GREASE ROCK

In his first and only film, Monty Ray Garrisondelivers a star-making performance as Robbie, a goofy yet charming rogue who loves his sidecar motorcycle, hair grease and disco. But when he meets a high-class American (Auretta Gay of ZOMBIE fame in her screen debut), he’ll pursue her through a polyester odyssey of tight outfits, insane dance-offs, rival gangs, car chases, J&B, a disco cover version of ‘Satisfaction’ and the big King & Queen of Rock Contest. Fiamma Maglione (EATEN ALIVE) and pop star Cecilia Buonocore co-star in this defiantly WTF? mash-up directed by Michele Massimo Tarantini (MASSACRE IN DINOSAUR VALLEY, A MAN CALLED MAGNUM) and featuring wall-to-wall music by Gianfranco Reverberi (THE REINCARNATION OF ISABEL, DELIRIUM), now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative for the first time ever.

JOHN TRAVOLTO: THE FACE WITH 2 LEFT FEET

The most infamous Italian Discosploitation film of all is “everything you would imagine such a thing to be” (Dangerous Minds) and then some: In his sole leading role, Giuseppe Spezia stars as clumsy wallflower Gianni who spends his nights at ‘John’s Fever’ hopelessly in love with the club’s beautiful DJ (adult film star/Parliamentarian Ilona Staller, aka Cicciolina). But after his friends give him a complete makeover, Gianni becomes a dead-ringer for a certain American movie star who just might win the heart of a disco queen. Massimo Vanni (RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR), Sonia Viviani (NIGHTMARE CITY) and Angelo Infanti (THE GODFATHER) co-star in this “treasure of Travoltasploitation” (Cinetarium) directed by Neri Parenti (FRACCHIA VS. DRACULA) from a screenplay by Giovanni Simonelli (A CAT IN THE BRAIN, JUNGLE RAIDERS) and Oscar®nominee Massimo Franciosa (THE FOUR DAYS OF NAPLES, SPASMO), now scanned in 4K from the original negative for the first time ever with a Bonus Soundtrack CD.

THE MUSIC MACHINE

Immediately after SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER swept the world, the ‘discosploitation’ genre was born. And in the UK’s first polyester imitator, director Ian Sharp (THE FINAL OPTION) crafts a gritty time capsule of late ‘70s London in which an unemployed bloke (Gerry Sundquist of DON’T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS) tries to win the big dance competition at Camden Town’s iconic club, The Music Machine. British-Nigerian singer Patti Boulaye, Clarke Peters (The Wire), Ferdy Mayne (THE FEARLES VAMPIRE KILLERS) and Academy Award® winner Brenda Fricker(MY LEFT FOOT) co-star in this “oddly likeable” (The Observer) discomania melodrama written by James Kenelm Clarke(HOUSE ON STRAW HILL) and produced by Brian Smedley-Aston (VAMPYRES) with cinematography by Phil Meheux (CASINO ROYALE), now scanned in 4K from a combination of the CRI and original camera negative for the first time ever.

Special Features:
  • The Dance Partner – Interview With Actress Patti Boulaye
  • Howard & Candy: The Music Machine Dance Rivals – Interviews With Actors David Easter And Mandy Perryment
  • The Music Machine Mentor – Interview With Actor Clarke Peters
  • The Dance Machine – Interview With Choreographer Anthony Van Laast
  • The Music Of The Machine – Interview With Musician/Songwriter Les Hurdle

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I watched all the trailers for the movies for the Disco set and dear lord, I love bad movies, but I can't imagine wanting to watch those more than once. Looks pretty rough, even buying on a sale price.

Though they are selling a book on the same subject that I might be more apt to purchase. DISCOMANIA Book Autographed by Alan Jones – Severin Films

What is ostensibly a detailed rundown of the Top 100 Disco Movies Of All Time is also a glorious autobiographical celebration of disco, punk and a trail-blazing career in the genre arena. In this epic 450-page/full-color “courageous and outrageous” (
The Guardian) tome, original punk rocker and pioneering horror journalist Alan Jones reveals all about this often-maligned pop enclave as well as his life, loves and scandals in the two musical genres that have marked his extraordinary dance card.

John Travolto

I didn’t realize there was a Discoploitation genre.

Severin Blu-rays are not cheap. So it’s likely a pass from me even if I am curious how awful those are.

By the way, I think someone posted that entire movie on YouTube and that Italian dude does look like Travolta.
