The next groundbreaking Severin collection — a landmark new exploration of transgressive Spanish cinema — is now available for pre-order: EXORCISMO: DEFYING A DICTATOR & RAISING HELL IN POST-FRANCO SPAIN includes 18 pivotalfeature films released both during and in the wake of the Franco dictatorship, the award-winning documentary EXORCISMO: THE TRANSGRESSIVE LEGACY OF CLASIFICADA “S” narrated by Iggy Pop and produced by Severin Films, plus the new 168-page book EXORCI“S”MO!

Having endured decades of strict censorship laws under General Franco’s authoritarian rule, Spain’s entertainment industry fought to liberate cinematic expression before and after the dictator's death in 1975. Faced with an opportunity to subvert the regime’s values and protest the Catholic Church’s rigid restrictions, Spanish filmmakers began to defiantly explore banned themes such as sex, violence and horror. With the post-Franco Clasificada “S” rating, which restricted these films to audiences over 18, this active rebellion marked a shift in the nation and audiences considered this period of cinema to be a cultural ‘exorcismo.’ Honoring the art of resistance-by-cinema, EXORCISMO: DEFYING A DICTATOR & RAISING HELL IN POST-FRANCO SPAIN spotlights 18 films that launched a celluloid revolution, including infamous features directed by Eloy de la Iglesia, León Klimovsky, Javier Aguirre and Eugenio Martín.

Also included is writer/producer/director Alberto Sedano’s acclaimed 2024 documentary EXORCISMO: THE TRANSGRESSIVE LEGACY OF CLASIFICADA “S”, which explores the history behind the notorious rating that rocked Spanish culture, changed the face of genre films and left its mark on global cinema forever. The 168-page EXORCI“S”MO! features new essays by Alberto Sedano, Alejandro Melero, Álex Mendíbil, Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Daniel Kowalski, plus poster/stills galleries and more. The majority of the titles in this unprecedented collection are Worldwide Blu-ray Premieresscanned in 4K from original camera negatives, with over 21 combined hours of new and archival Special Features.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I would like to watch that documentary but not sure if I would need to own it.

I had no idea Lee was in Beat Girl. The only reason I even know about that film is because it was one of John Barry's early scores.

BEAT GIRL is actually a really good ‘problem youth’ movie, and Barry’s score is fantastic. I actually bought a CD way back in the 90’s of various Barry themes – many of which I was already familiar with from owning those soundtracks – but the BEAT GIRL theme blew me away. It wasn’t until 2016-ish that I finally got my hands on the movie via the BFI Blu-ray from the UK and discovered it’s a pretty good movie, of its kind. And the opening sequence is memorable thanks to Barry’s theme (and hep cat Oliver Reed):

BFI’s disc has three short films not in Severin’s version, including and interesting 25-minute one called CROSS ROADS starring Christopher Lee. Kinda surprised they didn’t port that over, but considering how many of these sets they’ve been able to put together, it’s probably in one of them already!

Extremely excited to have this officially confirmed:

Two UHD presentations too; the Italian version has been presented in SD by Arrow and Kino Lorber, and the prospect of seeing it in UHD is a thrill!

Severin is calling this "the official North American disc premiere", the implication being (I guess) that the Film Masters BD was not official.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I wouldn’t be surprised if Film Masters wasn’t official. A lot of their stuff is public domain, or “thought to be”, and many of their recent Blu-rays (especially in the lower tiers) are just nice transfers of really good prints of films that are demonstrably in the public domain. CRIPPLED MASTERS was ubiquitous on iffy VHS and DVDs for decades. That said, I’ll only buy the Severin Edition when it inevitably hits $7.50 or so in their sales. I have no doubt it will look and sound superior (original Mandarin track!), based on the details below, as Severin now has the muscle thanks to their Bruce Clones endeavour to track down better materials for these films that have long suffered in the ‘public domain’. But as interesting, historically, as the film is, it’s definitely not worth whatever Black Friday pricing they’ll put on it. Still, kudos to them being able to access an internegative. My guess is they now have access to a lot of stuff like that that falls (far) outside the usual Shaw and Golden Harvest catalogs. The trick is finding ways to repackage a lot of it (a la boxed sets) so people will pony up for movies that are still pretty easy to see online or on disc – albeit in often ratty condition – with just a couple of mouse clicks.

Speaking of muscle, it appears the Film Masters version has disappeared from both their website and their YouTube channel. I do think their disc is worth keeping, as the Ballyhoo doc is decent, and the commentary isn’t too bad (although Djeng can improve on it).

  • NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM AN INTERPOSITIVE
  • MANDARIN AND ENGLISH AUDIO TRACKS
  • Audio Commentary With Frank Djeng, Co-Producer Of ENTER THE CLONES OF BRUCE
  • Audio Essay By Cult Cinema Critic Lovely Jon
  • Unleashing The Legends: The Godfathers Of Kung Fu Distribution – Interview With Temple Of Schlock's Chris Poggiali
  • Original Trailer
  • New Line Cinema U.S. Trailer
  • Subtitles: English SDH, English

As I was saying . . .

Another Black Friday release, and another dig into some martial arts obscurities, this time from Japan, but riffing on you-know-who :

Following their international success with Sonny Chiba's THE STREET FIGHTER series, Toei Company signed Japanese American 8th-degree black belt karate and kobudo (weapons) champion Tadashi Yamashita for a new action trilogy in which Yamashita's rugged looks and ferocious skills are pitted against a murderer's row of actual competition fighters: In ZA KARATE – also included here in the recut/dubbed U.S. Version released as BRONSON LEE, CHAMPION – Ohio farm boy Yamashita is targeted by mobsters when he dares to compete in Kyoto's World Championship. In ZA KARATE 2, the world's deadliest martial artists are sent to kill Tadashi before he can avenge the theft of a priceless sword. In ZA KARATE 3, Yamashita must learn new fighting styles to defeat a global squad of kung fu assassins. Asian cinema icons including Bolo Yeung (ENTER THE DRAGON), Shingo Yamashiro (13 ASSASSINS) and Shunji Sasaki (SAMURAI WOLF) co-star in these "batsh*t fun" (Trashmen Media) films directed by Yukio Nodo (Toei's DELINQUENT BOSS series), now scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives for the first time ever, with nearly 3 hours of all-new Special Features starring Grandmaster Yamashita himself.

I kinda like that cover. Looks like a solid release. I have a lot of Bava on DVD but not blu so this might be good to get. Hopefully it will be a good-looking presentation.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Another Black Friday release: Robert Fuest’s THE FINAL PROGRAMME. I never got around to getting Shout’s previous Blu-ray, and ended up importing the UK DVD a few months ago. It’s definitely an interesting sci-if film, especially that ending, but I wouldn’t have guessed there was much demand by now.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Another BF reveal, THE GHOST (1963).

Direct from its triumphant 2025 premiere at the Venice International Film Festival comes “Riccardo Freda’s masterpiece” (At the Mansion of Madness) featuring a stunning performance by “the greatest femme fatale of EuroShock cinema” (Through the Shattered Lens) Barbara Steele, now in UHD for the first time ever: In turn-of-the-century Scotland, a young wife (Steele) conspires with her lover to murder her wealthy paralyzed husband. But when the dead spouse’s spirit returns, it will unlock a nightmare of spectral terror, sudden violence and depraved vengeance. Peter Baldwin (THE WEEKEND MURDERS) and Harriet Medin (THE WHIP AND THE BODY) co-star in the 1963 classic that re-sets the bar for Italian horror, co-written by Freda and Oreste Biancoli (BICYCLE THIEVES) with an intense score by Francesco De Masi (AN ANGEL FOR SATAN). THE GHOST has been scanned in 4K from the thought-lost original camera negative and restored by Severin Films, curated for this Limited Edition with the 2019 documentary EXECUTIONERS, MASKS, SECRETS: ITALIAN HORROR OF THE 1960s, 4 hours of Special Features and a De Masi Soundtrack Compilation CD.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

And another announcement:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Also, regarding RETRIBUTION, posted earlier. The movie is pretty good, and has looked decent on its many physical media releases, and this supposedly gorier version found this year (curious if it’s the same as the ‘Extended Dutch video version’ included on their existing Blu-ray, only better quality?) doesn’t really make me want to revisit a one-time view like this. Maybe a sale item down the road.

In 2021, Severin Films was proud to resurrect the “gory, bizarre and intense” (McBastard’s Mausoleum) forgotten classic from co-writer/director Guy Magar on Blu ray. But in 2025, our search of a Los Angeles lab vault led to the discovery of the unclaimed negative for the thought-lost Unrated Version just days prior to its destruction. ‘80s splatter fans rejoice: Magar’s neon and viscera-soaked saga of possession, vengeance and carnage has never looked or sounded more harrowing. Dennis Lipscomb (EYES OF FIRE), Leslie Wing (THE FRIGHTENERS), Suzanne Snyder (WEIRD SCIENCE) and Hoyt Axton (GREMLINS) star in this “relentless squishy joy that makes us angry we’ve lived this long without having seen it” (Bleeding Skull), now on 2 discs with both the Unrated and Theatrical Versions scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives and over 3 hours of Special Features.

I will be going to Creep IE Con tomorrow. It’s one of the biggest West coast horror cons. Severin will have a booth there. Are there 1 or 2 titles recently released that are worth picking up?

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I am so mad at myself.

The other day I spilled coffee on my table and my Game of Clones Brucesplotation box set happened to be there. I took it out because I was planning to watch some of the content.

Anyway, the coffee landed on the set and I just quickly wiped it off with a paper towel, not realizing that the coffee actually went inside the set. I should have double checked.

Sadly I learned the damages today, the set is basically ruined. The inside cardboard case is basically warped and wet and the discs are stuck. The booklet also got wet and got stuck inside and it was hard to pull out and when I did get it out, some of the cover and sides tore off.

It's possible the discs are likely damaged too. I cannot just use a blow dryer to fix this. The set is fucked and shame because i spent $100 on it. So I went back to Amazon and it's about $20 more and I reluctantly ordered a new one.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

There were actually two sets announced today :

Those Margheriti adventure films are very moderately fun – like 5 out of 10 fun perhaps? – but I don’t think I’m going out on a limb to speculate that no one has been begging for them in 4K. Like so many 80’s Italian knockoffs, they’re just ok, but 4K won’t change that. 88 Films did separate Blu-ray (region A + B) and 4K editions of ARK OF THE SUN GOD, but I don’t recall the other two getting decent Blu-ray treatments (might be misremembering). Once I got the import Blu for SUN GOD, I hunted around for the other two (even though they’re unrelated) to no avail. so it’s cool that they’re finally getting some attention, but no way can I justify the up charge.

For anyone wanting to sample them, they’re all on YouTube in excellent quality versions, in scope aspect ratio with English audio (which is correct considering the leading stars).

The Andy Milligan box is tempting in a future sale to complement their earlier collection of his other films. Nice that it’s Blu only, especially considering how cheap most of Milligan’s films were. A lot of his stuff can be a chore to get through.

Severin Films honors two unique directors – polarizing grindhouse auteur Andy Milliganand Italian action specialist Antonio Margheriti – with the release of the new collections GUTTER AUTEUR: THE LOST LEGACY OF ANDY MILLIGAN and ANTONIO MARGHERITI AND THE JUNGLES OF DOOM.

GUTTER AUTEUR presents two thought-lost-forever films written, directed and produced by Andy Milligan: THE DEGENERATES and KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME!, both unseen for nearly 50 years and recently discovered by Severin sleuths languishing in European film vaults. The collection also features the acclaimed 2025 documentary THE DEGENERATE: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF ANDY MILLIGAN,which explores Milligan’s bizarre life and controversial oeuvre through interviews with Milligan’s family, friends, colleagues and a rare archival interview with Milligan himself. Also included is the early Milligan project COMPASS ROSE and 1979’s rarely seen Staten Island southern gothic HOUSE OF SEVEN BELLES, plus over 5 combined hours of Special Features.

ANTONIO MARGHERITI AND THE JUNGLES OF DOOM features the North American UHD/Blu-ray premieres of the prolific Italian filmmaker’s ‘Indiana Jonesploitation’ Trilogy: THE HUNTERS OF THE GOLDEN COBRA, THE ARK OF THE SUN GOD and JUNGLE RAIDERS. All three features – available individually or with a 3 film slipcase – are newly scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives with 2+ hours of new and archival Special Features and a Bonus Soundtrack CD.

Pre-orders for GUTTER AUTEUR: THE LOST LEGACY OF ANDY MILLIGAN and ANTONIO MARGHERITI AND THE JUNGLES OF DOOM available now at SeverinFilms.com.

GUTTER AUTEUR: THE LOST LEGACY OF ANDY MILLIGAN

Pioneer. Outsider. Auteur. Andy Milliganclawed his way from the depths of ‘60s independent cinema straight to the abyss of grindhouse infamy like no other filmmaker in history. In this all-new collection of Worldwide Disc Premieres, Severin Films presents two thought-lost-forever features written, produced and directed by “The Fassbinder of 42nd Street” (Artforum): 1967’s post-nuke nihilism THE DEGENERATES – recently discovered in a Brussels vault – and the 1968 underground psychodrama KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME! – found in an Amsterdam archive – are both restored from their only surviving film elements. Then in the acclaimed 2025 documentary THE DEGENERATE: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF ANDY MILLIGAN, experience “an eye-opening look into one of the weirder and darker corners of cinema history” (RogerEbert.com). Also included is the early Milligan project COMPASS ROSE and 1979’s rarely seen Staten Island gothic HOUSE OF SEVEN BELLES, plus over 5 combined hours of Special Features that reveal even more of the sordid saga behind “one of exploitation’s most fascinating figures” (Morbidly Beautiful).

ANTONIO MARGHERITI AND THE JUNGLES OF DOOM:

HIS ‘80s ADVENTURE FILMS

For more than four decades, Antonio Margheriti was a maestro of gothic horror, westerns, giallo, sci-fi and beyond. And in the immediate wake of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Margheriti directed three over-the-top action-adventure films that can only be described as ‘Indiana Jonesploitation’: In THEHUNTERS OF THE GOLDEN COBRA, David Warbeck and John Steiner star as a pair of WWII rogues in search of an ancient relic with supernatural powers. Warbeck and Steiner return in THE ARK OF THE SUN GOD to raid a mountaintop temple and snatch The Scepter of Gilgamesh. Christopher Connelly and Lee Van Cleef face booby traps, double-crosses and exploding miniatures to hunt a priceless jewel called The Ruby of Gloom in JUNGLE RAIDERS.All three films are newly scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives with 2+ hours of new and archival Special Features curated exclusively for this collection.

*All three films available individually or as a collection in a limited edition rigid slipcase.
THE HUNTERS OF THE GOLDEN COBRA

Almanta Suska (THE NEW YORK RIPPER) and Luciano Pigozzi (STRIKE COMMANDO) co-star in this “fun and entertaining knock-off” (The Grindhouse Cinema Database) from producer Gianfranco Couyoumdjian (ZOMBIE, ALIEN FROM THE DEEP) and screenwriter Tito Carpi (RAIDERS OF ATLANTIS, THE SHARK HUNTER), now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with over an hour of new & archival Special Features.

For the final film in his Indiana Jonesploitation Trilogy, director Antonio Margheriti unleashed a “fun and fast-paced” (Good Efficient Butchery) jungle adventure that became a VHS-era favorite, now in UHD for the first time ever. Christopher Connelly (RAIDERS OF ATLANTIS) stars as a cynical safari guide who leads gullible millionaires on bogus treasure hunts in Malaysia. But when a crafty U.S. government operative (the legendary Lee Van Cleef) blackmails him into finding the mythic Ruby of Gloom, they’ll battle death cults, double-crosses, unstable volcanoes and exploding refineries to snatch the jewel from maniacal pirates. Marina Costa (THE FINAL EXECUTIONER) and Luciano Pigozzi(DOUBLE TARGET) co-star in this “utterly charming” (B&S About Movies) action hit written by Giovanni Simonelli (THE ARK OF THE SUN GOD, A CAT IN THE BRAIN) and originally released in America by Cannon Films, newly scanned in 4K from the original camera negative.

One bit of advice for Severin’s convention table:

In their last four or five online sales they’ve discounted significant portions of their ‘single case’ editions (including many 2-disc editions, sets with bonus CD soundtracks, and sets with slips) down to $7.50 US. I’m pretty confident that it’s a regular thing now, and have stocked up heavily on their catalog in those sales (not to mention many other sales in previous years where the sale prices were still decent, but higher). At that price, I’m way more willing to take a chance on just about anything in their catalog despite how questionable the films often are, and it’s less painful of a loss (and possibly even a profit) if I sell them afterward or trade them in around here. I find a lot of Severin titles are worth seeing at least once, but I’ve only kept a small portion of them.

So basically, if their convention table has a bunch of stuff for $7.50, load up! If everything’s higher, maybe think twice? I don’t know if they discount box sets at conventions to similar pricing in their sales, but that might be an option to replace the CLONES OF BRUCE set and save a few bucks over Amazon (although I’m guessing Amazon’s already shipped it).

That said, looking at a few titles that I’ve kept here, I can second the recommendation of VAMPYROS LESBOS and SHE KILLED IN ECSTACY as those are probably two of the most bearable Jess Franco movies in my opinion (and he made a lot of crap from that era onward) and Severin went all in on the supplements with good context.

Others that I’ve kept: CEMETERY MAN, both STRIKE COMMANDO films, THE MAD BOMBER (a fast-paced crime thriller with some really good pyro work and a nutty performance by Chuck Connors), MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKALS (shitty movie, but interesting stories behind it), BLACKENSTEIN (ditto), BLOODY PIT OF HORROR, DRIVE-IN MASSACRE, GRIZZLY, DAY OF THE ANIMALS, A SCREAM IN THE STREETS (mainly for the amusing ‘drag killer’ performance), THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH and ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK (both very good giallos), THE ASTROLOGER, THE DEVIL’S RAIN, GWENDOLINE (a lavish comic-based adventure movie loaded with nudity), the FUTURE SHOCK and THAT’S SEXPLOITATION documentaries, both TRAILERS OF FURY compilations (which complement the CLONES set rather nicely), and THE CHANGELING.

Keep in mind, though, that all of those have been $7.50 in recent online sales. If you prefer to give the company some love at the convention because you’ve already made the trek, then I suppose you can’t do too badly with some of those above. Your mileage, etc.

Also, MVD visual has a Severin Flash Sale on until February 2 with some serious reductions, including several DVDs from $1.98 (!) and plenty of Blus in the $10 range. Might be worth cross-referencing while you’re at the convention table.

Looks like Bay Of Blood is going to need a replacement program. One of the cuts freezes in two spots on all players.
