Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

If you own the original AVATAR Release, pop it into your Blu-ray player if it's connected to the internet, and you can access new BD-Live bonus features as of now.

They give a glimpse into the new Collector's Edition, and are both downloadable and streamable.

According to Digital Bits, new content will arrive each week, leading up to the Collector's release date.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Yeah, I saw that on DB as well and checked it out.

Pretty cool, but I wont bother checking out the other upcoming previews, id rather save it all for when Im watching the set.

Was there a BD-Live menu option before? I don't remember.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...102005971.html

Cameron unveiled a new opening scene this week for an extended cut of his sci-fi blockbuster due out Nov. 16 on DVD and Blu-ray disc, the sequence offering a glimpse of life on crowded, polluted 22nd-century Earth, where city dwellers are bombarded by digital ads and wear masks for protection from the foul air.

The sequence that Cameron showed reporters depicts the dreary existence of his hero, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), before he's invited to join the Avatar program on the distant moon Pandora. An ex-Marine now in a wheelchair, Jake lives in a tiny, seedy room and hangs around boozing it up at a bar, where he starts a fight -- but for a good cause. Jake takes on a guy who had been slapping a woman around.

Cameron said he decided to cut that opening from last year's theatrical release despite how "great that sequence of scenes is for his character, and showing how even though he's paralyzed, he's not a victim. He's still a warrior. He's a stubborn, scrappy, brawling guy, but also one with a conscience and a sense of justice."

But Cameron said audiences eventually would find that out about Jake once he gets into action among the native Na'vi on Pandora. He said he dropped the opening on Earth to step up the pacing and land viewers more quickly on Pandora, where Jake falls for Na'vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).
Bill Hunt commented in the post linked above that he found the new opening much better than the theatrical one.

I'm pretty sure there wasn't one previously...

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

No, there wasn't. That's pretty neat stuff there. The menu options are slightly smaller to accomodate the 'Live Extras' option that is now on the right side of the screen.

They show 44 seconds of the opening as part of the new preview extras. You see him go up to the guy mentioned, knock him off his bar stool and start to pound him, but it's not long enough of a preview to reveal why. They show him being literally thrown out of the bar into the back alley, and his chair goes with him and hits his head.

Yeah, I added it to my cart yesterday to monitor the price, and it magically showed up in my quick picks today for $28.49. I added Master & Commander for another $7.49 with the bonus $5 discount combo offer.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I just watched some of the new preview content on BD-Live, including a couple of deleted scenes.

The temp/unfinished CG in one of the deleted scenes is fascinating. And you get two views. The main screen features the temp CG and also features the actors performing the scene in mocap. The two match 100%

People will undoubtedly find the temp CG to look almost creepy though. It is very...unique looking...

Thanks for the reminder. Need to throw my disc in and take a look at these bonus features popping up.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Review is up at the Bits

Mister Hunts review basically sums up as

+ Extended cut feels richer and more complete

+ Extras are plentiful and fascinating. Deleted scenes add even more to the story, Scene deconstruction covers 65 minutes of the film. Amazing Archive section with everything you could possibly want/need to know about the movie

+ Video quality is not only as good as original release, but perhaps even a tad better in some areas

- No Commentary

- No SDH subs for Extras

Thats about what I was expecting. Hopefully we will get a commentary via BD-Live

How much will Best Buy sell this for? I am leaning towards jumping for the Amazon deal right now.

Isn't Target selling it for $24.99? Sounds like the best price so far.

Isn't Titanic the only audio commentary where it's just him flying solo? Every other film Cameron has been involved with has either had:

A. No commentary (The Terminator, The Abyss, etc).

B. Non screen-specific audio commentary that's been put edited as it's numerous participants weighing in on the film (i.e. Terminator 2).

T2 isn't edited. Its Cameron and Bill Wisher together talking about the movie. Aliens is the one that edited together

You're right. I was thinking of the production commentary on T2. I forgot there was a separate one with just Cameron/Wisher.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Still though, Titanic did have 3 commentaries. Cameron solo, Cast commentary with Winslet and others, and a Historical commentary

Obviously there can't be a historical commentary, but I still would have loved to see a Cameron (solo or with landau) and a Cast commentary.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Considering everything that Cameron put into making this, and the results that followed, I think it's a damn shame there isn't a commentary.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Isn't the movie itself commentary enough about the state of the world, how we treat our natural resources, but more importantly how we treat OURSELVES! pity we feel the need for Cameron to hand hold us through the desolutness of life.

even if the Best Buy sale price is higher, it wont stop me from price matching the Target price.
