That seems pretty quick. I would have figured June maybe. I'll get this, but only on release date if there's a steelbook LE or something. Otherwise, I'll wait till it gets cheap.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Surprised it's coming out that soon. It made another 20+ million this past weekend. Was thinking FOX might do the Titanic thing and wait til like September to release it.

In regard to the sequel, never thought I'd ever hear Camerson say "cheaper and faster" in regard to something he would do.

Yeah, with the way it's going now I would think they would wait longer for the home video release.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Why wait? The box office is still doing well, but next week has Alice in Wonderland taking a bunch of 3D theaters away from it and March has more decent movies coming out. I think they are smart to cash in now while they obviously still have people interested and before the rabid audience finds something else to be distracted by. If they waited until later in the year, I think the summer movies would be bigger in people's minds. Right now, this is the still one of the biggest movies out there.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

We'll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime.
Am I interpreting Cameron's words correctly? Are the initial DVD and Blu-ray going to be movie-only releases, with the special features and 3-D following in November?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Iam thinking this will be pretty reasonably priced come its Earthday release, so i have no issues with picking up a barebones 2D bluray for this the first day, and then right before the 3D bluray release date is here i can sell off that one and use the money towards the the 3D bluray.

Hopefully by that time i will have a 3D DLP projector, but if not I will definately have a 3D tv
so i will be picking up the 3D version when its released.

The april 22nd date is still two months away so that gives the movie plenty of time to continue bringing in the money. at the rate its going it will pass 700 million domesticly by the middle to end of next week.
but as other posters have pointed out March/April is very packed in terms of 3D releases this year.
March 5th Alice in wonderland
March 26 How to train your Dragon
April 2 Clash of the titans

But as fox said a few weeks ago if come april the movie is till making 30 million a week they wont be yanking it out of theatres. (this week avatar looks to bring in just over 30 million for all 7 days ending today 2/18)
and its not been unheard of for a movie to continue playing in a limited number of theatres even after the home video release hits.

That's what it sounds like. I'll be getting the 3D version.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Will the 3D set also come with a 2D version? Or are 3D releases generally going to be 3D only (requiring both a compatible display and player)?

I believe it has already been established as a requirement that a 2D version will be included on 3D Blu-Rays.

Not super interested in Avatar itself, but I sure hope the release date also brings us The Abyss, True Lies, the completely restored Terminator, etc.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

So will the 3-D require special players/TVs, or will it work on any system as long as we have the glasses?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

i was actually expecting this to come out towards the beginning of the summer and then expect a re-release towards the holidays of some kind of special edition (like what they did w/ LOTR). Oh well, ill be picking this up on bluray... no 3d for me yet

Standard 2D release will suit me just fine - so long as it's priced accordingly.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

For as much money that Avatar has made and all the profit in their pockets, I think they could sell the Blu for under $10 and still make money in all the copies they would sell. Most likely they will charge premium price for a bare bones release.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Jeez not to turn this into a 3D Home Theater thread, but my friends just bought a Mitsibishi 73" DLP that was "3D ready." Not excited about seeing older films in 3D. And I just don't see how the Avatar 3D experience can be replicated at home.

I am buying a new TV and Blu player within a few months for our new house. If the best that I can afford has 3D, so be it.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I'm unconvinced that the experience of Avatar can be replicated in a home setting, and frankly, I don't want to even try. I like that an immersive 3-D film can inspire people to get into theaters, so I'd rather have something unique left to the multiplexes.

I'll likely buy this initial release, and possibly the later one just for the bonus features. But I'll never buy into any of this home 3-D nonsense.

You will need a 3D TV, 3D BD Player and 3D Glasses to watch the 3D Blu-ray in 3D.

Yeah, I'm not upgrading my whole system already. I just switched to BD a little over a year ago.

Unless its a 100" screen, it probably won't be that impressive in 3-D anyway.

Is anyone forcing you to? 3D versions will come with the regular 2D as well. I'm waiting for the 3D SE release... towards the end of the yr is prob when I'd want to watch this one again anyways.

My tv is 3d ready, my ps3 is 3d ready, I kept my 3d glasses from the theatre (hopefully the same). Double dip for me.

Easy for me on this one. As the only human being in the Western hemisphere who hasn't seen this yet, I'll Netflix the 2D version and then can pick up the deluxe version later this year.

That is what i don't get - what is the point of watching 3D on a 50" TV?

Maybe one day there will be a movie that makes me want to upgrade my home theater to 3D, but Avatar is not that movie.
