This Blu-Ray is on par with the IMAX scenes from the Transformers: RotF disc. Simply stunning.

I had no issues on my PS3.
Though by pure coincidence, PS3 just had a new mandatory firmware update prior to release day.

Hmm - I was online last night and didn't get prompted. Strange. Maybe my PS3 could sense my disinterest in this release.

I watched the movie three times prior to the new update being released so I think it's just a coincidence.

We're getting this movie today but it is really exciting enough to have watched it three times already?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I don't think I'd watch the barebones 3 times. I might watch the one coming out in november w/ commentary, some extended scenes etc etc 3 times. Man, we'd better get an awesome feature length making of doc

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I didn't watch it three times in a row. I watched it twice the day I rented it (alone at midday and then in the evening with my mother cos she hadn't seen it) and once the next day before I returned it.

It holds up well to repeat viewings.

I didn't assume that. I was just saying Avatar's current release couldn't get me to do that. Cameron better give us damn good features. Love to hear his commentary.

We are, as they've mentioned before there's going to be a 2-hour "filmmaker's journey" making-of.

whoa now...calm down. I'm assuming you like the movie on par w/ the PQ? not just cuz it's got a great PQ? I've yet to see it since theaters. So....I'll hold out til November.

PQ look so much BETTER than the AMC theater. Better sell your copy fast but keep the metallic slipcover if you want.

Judging by the feel of the outer case, I think I got a 2-disc eco case, which sucks. Anyone got lucky and got a regular 2-disc case for this?

Regarding the contrast, I only find it slightly off. A user earlier suggested it may simply be the limitations of the digital camera used. Makes sense as my reference titles for video on BD have been film-based transfers. And I think it simply irked me more than it should because I was expecting absolute perfection.

The audio is fantastic but I don't dig how the dialogue sounds. Try comparing the dialogue sound quality to scenes from Star Trek or Red Cliff. They sound natural and not tweaked (though, like all movies, I'm sure they were). The dialogue in Avatar sounds clean and clear but just ever so artificial. Again, I believe my ridiculously high expectations for this one release are to blame.

I think I worded this best in my response to a poster over at Blu-ray.com:

For the record, I have my set calibrated using my BD copy of Digital Video Essentials and my receiver/speakers were calibrated via Audyssey MultEQ XT.
Having worked as a broadcast engineer i also have calibrated ntsc video. I have found that computer generated films especially 3d sourced material do not stay within ntsc calibration, ex coraline, avatar. I find the vivid setting which provides color saturation a better viewing experience for Avatar.

Regarding audio found 1 major edit caused drop-age and the explosion of shuttle very wimpy.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I watched it last night.

...bar none the most beautiful Blu Ive ever seen. The Image quality is just out of this world, and many scenes in the film still manage to create a terrific sense of depth without being in 3D.

Amazing stuff.

The movie loaded fine in my Sony. Also, I noticed this one didn't come in an eco case. I was shocked. Especially since Fox was the first one to start using them. This is the 1 title you'd expect to be in that case.

Mine came in the regular Elite. I guess they ran out of the eco style. Not surprising if they did since this was probably the largest BD production of any movie.

Hmm, maybe I'll have to feel up a few more copies at various stores to see if I can get a copy in a regular 2-disc case.

I'm in Canada though. Maybe all our copies are packaged in the eco-case? Any other Canadians care to confirm?

I bought my copy at Target. I have another copy coming from Amazon that's going to be a gift. I'll check it when it gets here to see if it's flimsy or not.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I found out Best Buy was giving away a really nice 27x40 poster with the purchase there. I don't think it was advertised. I bet those are long gone now. I expected a crappy 24x36 that places like Walmart carries, but this looks like a theatrical size. Here's a pic someone took from blu-ray.com:

I wouldn't sweat missing out. Who wants a DVD/BD promo poster anyway?

Just saw the actual pictures of Asian Ironpack with lenticular artcards and artbook, Chinese version have unique cover on interior/exterial artwork but Hong Kong have writing on the back, while Chinese do not.

Yup.

Me.

Note the "version Francaise incluse" nonsense in the last image where you see the front cover. I took these about 20 minutes ago or so and also linked them on Blu-ray.com and HTF. Custom printing here I come....and I'm going to swap cases with the 2-disc Beetlejuice case.
