Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

DVD MSRP is $35
Blu-Ray MSRP is $55

Those are pretty much normal prices for Collectors Edition type releases.

The blu-ray is discounted to $35 on Amazon atm. Im sure youll be able to find it for $29 or something on the week of release

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Honestly though, as loaded as this set it that MSRP isn't really all that outrageous. We've all seen releases with far less with comparable MSRPs.

As you can see, the price listed here on the other page was for the DVD, not the Blu-ray.

I hope so. Canadian SRP is specifically $66.99.

The Harry Potter Blu-Ray Ultimate Editions are $49.99. Only a $5 difference for a Catalog collectors edition release. So yeah, definitely not too bad.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

^^ My mistake. I automatically assumed it was for the BR. Even then, $35-40 discounted for a 3-disc loaded collector's edition BR isn't outrageous IMO. There is alot of good stuff on that set...plus a 2 1/2 hour making of documentary as well (Capturing Avatar). In essence, your talking about 4 feature length films in this set for that price.

I think you'll probably be able to find it for about $45. Think along the lines of the Ultimate Edition of Watchmen.

It will be interesting to see what the reviews say. I'll probably hold onto the original disc.

It remains to be seen. Every compression job is different. It's possible that they could achieve the same visual quality with better compression work, with more time and/or fine tuning. They tend to get more out of fewer bits as time goes on, but that's probably negligible in this case because it's only been 7 months or so between editions.

Interesting idea but isn't it ultimately pointless given the level of violence in this film? Language = bad, violence = good?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I wouldn't classify any of the violence in Avatar as horrific or deplorable, its all bloodless and strictly in a fantasy setting.

Its overall a pretty kid friendly picture, which is why I was surprised there was so much swearing in the theatrical version, so I think a family friendly audio choice is actually not a bad decision.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Will the "family friendly" version also remove all the scenes of Sigourney Weaver smoking?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Is the case going to have paper pages the discs slip into? It looked like it from the new trailers for the blu-ray release and that just sucks if its true. While the discs are harder to scratch up, i really prefer the standard keep case over paper slip pages or whatever you call them.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

this can't get here soon enough, I can't wait. I'm gonna watch the SE first, then the 16+ minutes BD version after that. This is my most anticipated BD for the rest of the year.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I don't understand why these studios love throwing discs into paper sleeves. Not only do they significantly increase the chances for disc damage, they're also harder to keep in good condition.

You should just skip the SE and watch the Extended version first IMO.

I saw the SE in theaters, and really liked the additions, thought that added up they made the film stronger in a few important ways, but since the Extended is basically the SE + an additional 8 minutes (totalling 16), there would really be no reason to have to watch the SE on blu-ray (unless maybe you end up HATING the alternate opening, then you could have a compromise, a version of the movie with most of the new footage and without the new opening, so I guess in that sense its nice that there is a choice. Kinda like how I know there are people who love a lot of the additions to the ALIENS SE, but don't care for the Hadley's Hope opening scenes)

i'm stoked at getting the new set. I hope the documentary isn't shy about telling the truth ala Under Pressure on The Abyss SE.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I doubt there was anything controversial that went on during the shooting of this movie, like there was during Abyss. From everything Ive seen, the shoot seemed pretty civilized even by Cameron standards. The Making of Avatar book kinda makes it seem like the set was a pretty chill environment.

Yeah...I mean..it's the guy who made Titanic. I'm sure the studio just hoped it'd make a lot of cash and didn't care wtf Cameron did. As long as they got a lot of money from it.

Most of the strife on Cameron sets comes from Cameron himself, not the studios. He's an obsessive perfectionist and a micro-manager.

With that said, I think he's probably loosened up in recent years. Winning an Oscar and having the highest grossing movie(s) of all time gave him exactly the validation he'd struggled for his entire career.

Also, working in a full "Digital Backlot" environment like Avatar finally gives him the absolute control over every aspect of filmmaking that he's always wanted. Aside from the actors, he no longer has to rely on many other people to do things for him.

And someday, the technology will allow him to be convincingly motion-captured playing all the parts.
