Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Article says the 3D version of Alice in Wonderland will be exclusive to Sony.

All these 3D exclusives.... way to kill a format from the start.

A similar sentiment was expressed over at Blu-ray.com and I couldn't agree more.

So far, Panasonic is leading the 3D herd in terms of overall quality compared to Samsung, but Sony hasn't revealed its tech for demo yet.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Excuse me if I haven't been following this much, but is that Panasonic version going to be "the" 3D format that all discs will eventually use, or is it something proprietary to Panasonic players/displays? That goes for other titles getting exclusive 3D versions.

Just saw this as a rental from Blockbuster. The story itself is pretty blase' but visually stunning. If I run across a used copy of the 1 disc after the 2 discs come out I'll pick it up.

The 3D format is general across all the 3D Blu-ray player platforms. All these exclusives are just that the studio is only packaging the 3D version of the film with that manufacturer for now until their exclusivity agreement expires and becomes available to the general audience. It is simply another way to lure customers towards purchasing one manufacturer's 3D equipment over another.

Honestly I think it is hurting their sales more than helping by limiting the amount of content availability. I am less inclined to purchase a 3D TV if I cannot find enough films to watch and benefit from that 3D element. And it's not as if those TV packages are cheap enough I can buy multiples just to get the movie. Imagine each time you go to buy a new release you have to shell out a few grand LOL!

I've been to Disney and saw 3D presentations of Honey I Shrunk The Audience and The Muppets among others. For a 30 minute presentation they're fun but I really have no interest in watching hour after hour, night after night of 3D. I also have no funds to upgrade equipment for an occasional movie

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

3D will take some time to gain some momentum in both blu-ray discs and cable/satellite content, along with the new TV sales, I think the broadcasters and TV manufacturers must realize this. Avatar in 3D will definitely speed the migration faster than Monsters Vs Aliens though, and hopefully ESPN-3D will get carried in all of the major markets as I think sports can be the catalyst to getting people to pony up the money. 2010 is not going to be the make-or-break year for 3D HD.

With more movies getting the 3D treatment of Clash of the Titans and now The Last Airbender, not even Avatar can save the format if this continues.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Could someone summarize the deal with exclusive 3d? I'm interested in owning the movie, but I couldn't careless about 3d at home. I'm interested in the special features and new features in the next edition. Will the whole set be exclusive to a manufacturer? Will it just be the 3d copy on the disc coded for a certain type of set?

also:

"This week Fox and Panasonic, as well as Universal, announced the immediate availability of the first 3D Blu-ray versions of “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” and “Coraline” only with the purchase of a Panasonic Blu-ray player. There are no announced plans for either of those titles to be available to traditional retail in 2010."

here's my retort to all this:

We don't know yet what they will do with Avatar, but I think that by then, the studios will feel comfortable with launching 3D "for everyone." Other than just not being ready yet, I can't think of a reason why they're doing these hardware-bundled versions (unless it's just that the hardware companies are paying a lot for them).

I asked someone here and was told these are all "the" 3D BD standard and not specific to a certain type of hardware.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

so essentially the only 3D non exclusive release will be the Zemekis 'Christmas Carol' release from Disney - right?

No, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" is hitting store shelves on June 22 in Blu-ray 3D.

Thanks. So, it sounds like I could wait and buy the deluxe version in the fall and use everything on it (special features, new footage) except the 3d transfer.

All that's known so far is that the 3D release of Avatar in November will be a Panasonic exclusive.

Pretty much the entire home theater industry can take 3D and go screw themselves. The whole thing sounds like a mess...
