Seems like the most recent Apollo 13 20th Anniversary BD got glowing reviews.

Sort of how the Apollo 13 HD-DVD is better than any BD on the market.
I have the UK region-free disc, it has the full documentary. I don't remember much about the transfer.

The HD DVD is more detailed. Universal used the same aging master for both releases, but they slathered the Blu-ray one in noise reduction but left the HD DVD pretty much alone for whatever reason. And, yeah, they mucked up the documentary on the Blu-ray release too. It's picture-in-picture only instead of being a standalone feature.

Cundey has notoriously revisionist tendencies, doesn't he? I wonder why they couldn't get Carpenter himself to supervise it?

Carpenter is focused on his music and is on tour right now. No time.

The deluxe version of The Thing is almost tempting as I like the new original artwork on that version. I don't really need two slipcovers though and while the poster is kind of cool I don't really need it.

I don't want to bother with the deluxe edition, but that second slipcover is soooooo much better than the default one. What the hell?

THE THING is one of my all-time favorite films, but after receiving my MANHUNTER pre-order in a flimsy cardboard mailer with one disc arriving as a floater, I'm not so inclined to order direct from SF. I've been reading a fair amount of customer complaints lately about their flimsy mailers smushing the slipcovers in transit.

Even though it will be a quadruple dip (2 dvds and the first Blu-ray) for me, I'm inclined to get this since its one of my 5 favorite movies of all time. However, I will wait for a sub $20 price much like I did with Escape from NY (favorite of all time). Really nice set, it's a shame it took so long to get this.

I'm with you there. I still own this on LD, DVD with isolated scor,e and Blu-ray so I can afford to wait for a price drop. Don't really have any use for slipcovers but I do like that second poster.

I will likely pass on the deluxe edition, as I don't think I need two slip covers and two posters. I still have the UHF poster from shout and havent really done anything with it. Also a new version of Road House is coming on September 6th, I hope they do have some new extras as well as the previous ones. Especially the Kevin Smith commentary.

I am going to wait to see what the new scan looks like before I toss my old BD copy of The Thing and get this one. I saw what happened to Dog Soldiers and I was certainly glad I kept my old BD and didn't toss it.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

First things first, why Scream / Shout continue to focus on tons and tons of extras is beyond me. That's all fine, but their absolute FIRST priority should be to give us a stellar transfer and top-notch encode in every release. It seems that they're going gangbusters on focusing on extras at the notable and obvious expense of a top-notch transfer.

For THE THING, perhaps my favorite horror film of all time, I of course welcome extras. But, they've been done to death over the years in the many previous releases of the film.

We need a non-revisionist (ie, non-tealified) transfer, no DNR, no EE, just the straight dope. Encoded onto a BD-50 with bitrate in excess of 30 mbps. That's all I ask. Everything else is gravy.

With a notoriously revisionist DP on board "supervising" the transfer, it doesn't look good. I'll be clutching my ancient HD-DVD very tightly indeed, and hope beyond all that I may be proven wrong with a stellar release...

If I buy this, it will be the fifth time I've owned The Thing ('98 DVD, SE DVD, HD-DVD, and current BD). I think I'm going to wait for a couple reviews before i make a decision, though.

On another Shout/Scream Factory point, got my copy of Manhunter from DVDEmpire last night. Looks fantastic, I was on the fence about buying it (triple dip - Limited numbered Edition dvd, barebones blu), but I'm glad I did. Really nice set and worth the money I paid for it.

I'm definitely in for Transformers.

However, as much as I'm a fan of OAR releases, I really hope they include both widescreen and full frame transfers on this.

I watched this on video over 500 times and the full frame copy is 99% just open frame so there's much more animation to enjoy.

I also want bonus features that are not just your standard Shout Factory interview featurettes.
