Escape from LA currently has a $5.16 coupon on Amazon

The Deer Hunter 4K UHD has a $4.35 coupon

Brings the discs down to $18 and change each. I went ahead and picked both up last night. If you're interested in either title, you better hurry, these coupons don't last long.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I have strongly mixed feelings about the '76 Kong. I remember sending for a free poster that featured the production art of Kong fighting a jet atop the World Trade Center. I remember a big Time magazine cover article (I think it was on the cover) that featured a revealing shot of Jessica Lange in Kong's hand. Dino DeLaurentis hyped his (mostly phony) mechanical Kong so much, -and there wasn't the level of BTS info you have today, -so I expected to see a mechanical Kong. I saw it in theaters almost immediately though I had heard nothing but bad reviews. I was stunned that Kong was just Rick Baker in a suit (a very good suit, but a suit). All the campy humor and the awful Lorenzo Semple dialogue just had me boiling. I honestly left the theater angry.

Still, I've watched it many times over the years and if it's on I'll probably watch a few minutes of it. I could say I'm thinking about buying the set, but I know I'm buying the set.

I’ve actually only ever seen the 2005 Peter Jackson version of King Kong. Slightly interested in the 1976 version though so maybe I’ll pick it up eventually.

Explorers was announced also- I’ll buy it if it includes the theatrical version. The initial video releases were a “Special Home Video Version” that omitted a couple scenes and added others. The digital versions have been the theatrical cut though.

I don't know why but I hate Jackson's Kong and strangely enough enjoy the 76 version although it is ridiculously inferior to the original.

For the life of me, I don't know that I've ever seen the TV cut, -I assume the added scenes were assembled out of outtakes from the cutting room floor.

That's awesome! I figured it was due soon when I saw it pop up on streaming channels lately. Sadly we will never get to see what was intended for the third act of the movie.

I liked Jackson’s, but like I say it’s the only version I’ve ever seen. Never have watched the original even though I know it’s iconic and a classic.

Oh, I should explain, I've never seen any version of this movie. But I've got a decent collection of Godzilla/Kong/other kaiju movies so I was interested already, and I also have a thing for extended TV cuts so now I'm really interested!

Aren't the scenes they removed included as bonus features?

EDIT: yep.

The Japanese Kong films (King Kong vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes) are worth a watch. They included the original Japanese cut of KKvs.G on Criterion's Godzilla blu-ray (the first international release of it), and that version in particular is actually pretty (intentionally) funny.

When I was a child I watched the original every time it was on. I just loved it. I remember throwing a fit because my grandfather bought baseball tickets (he was a big fan, I could not care less) and I would have to miss a Kong showing on Television. Looking back, I feel a little guilty about that. I became a huge fan of stop-motion animation. Even though Ray Harryhausen's work is far more sophisticated than that of Willis O'Brien (creator of Kong) you just have to respect the enormity of what he did. I remember seeing a wire story (a filler item) in my local paper where a stuntman claimed he played Kong (in an ape suit) in the film and described the experience. He said puppets were only used for a "long shot" where Kong climbed the Empire State Building. Of course, the opposite was true. I don't know if he was lying or misquoted but the paper presented it as the truth without question.
I've actually got the version that Peter Jackson's crew created a special scene for, but I still haven't gotten around to watching it.

Explorers is listed as 2 discs so it will likely include both versions. Shame that Joe Dante couldn’t also do a “final cut”.

I'll strong consider getting King Kong; maybe during a Target B2G1 sale.

Not a great film by any stretch, but it's pure 70s cheese if you're into that.

Well, I know why I hate Jackson's "King Kong". It felt bloated overall. The first and third acts are fine. But the second act was an unwatchable mess with those natives on the island. A friend of mine compared it to "The Matrix Reloaded" rave scene. Aside from that, Jackson's film is pretty stunning looking. But left me empty. I saw the Dino De Laurentiis version when I was a kid and loved it. As someone mentioned, people were talking about it everywhere including the cover of Time magazine. So it was quite the movie event. Years later I recognize that it's really camp and not a great film either overall, but I still love it. It has heart and I remember people crying at the end in my theater. Jessica Lange was definitely a highlight. She was a stunner. It didn't make her an instant star that the Producers had hoped, but it opened doors for her three years later to play in "All That Jazz". And it was uphill from there.

Looks stacked! Too bad about DC, but I’m just fine with the theatrical cut.

Haven’t gotten into extras yet, but the audio/visual on Event Horizonis great. Looks great and sound effects make you jump even at lower volume levels. The DTS is booming, but the clarity of voice is equally great level and clear, which is most important and again the transfer looks very good to my eyes. Can’t wait to dive into extras...

Let’s see them top the extras from the Canadian release of Brotherhood of the Wolf. Buying either way, along with Dead Zone.
