City of Women and Blue Angel on blu-ray is amazing news. Can't imagine these getting a release in america anytime soon considering the first doesn't have much of a fanbase. yet another reason to stay alive!

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

FYI, Blue Angel is coming from Kino in December. According to the Amazon listing it appears to have most of the same special features as the MoC.

MoC has both german and english versions though.

Most psyched for the Onibaba upgrade though.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

According to the linked Amazon listing, the Kino has both German & English versions as well.

Guaranteed MoC will have a better booklet, and odds are good Kino's artwork will be worse, but for Americans who want a local option, it appears for now that Kino's release will be comparable.

Sweet. Most excited for Blue Angel but I'll probably pick 'em all up.

Look what came in the mail today!

It's actually an outer box with the steelbook and a book inside. It's slightly thinner than Criterion's Che set.

Here's a pic of the actual steelbook:

Got my copy today...but not the steelbook. Still has some awesome packaging though and I usually don't give a hoot about that.

What a feeling though to have one of my favorite films ever given the full blu-ray treatment from MoC.

The transfer is beautiful. I watched it as soon as I received it. One of my favorite films as well.

Their releases for the first quarter of next year:

I hadn't heard of Bakumatsu, but apparently Japanese critics consider it one of the greatest Japanese films of all time.

I won't bother double-dipping on the Antonioni or the Chabrols, but the others will be mine. It's nice to see them getting back to releasing films that haven't had a previous English-friendly release - this year's release slate was a little bit of a disappointment in that regard, in my opinion.

I have the Kino. It's not a bad release. Here's how MOC stacks up:

The Birth of a Nation
• Music by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra in 2.0 stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
• Short archival introductions to the film by D. W. Griffith and Walter Huston
• Newly rediscovered original intermission sequence and 1930 re-release title sequence
• Seven Civil War shorts directed by Griffith:
In the Border States (1910)
The House with Closed Shutters (1910)
The Fugitive (1910)
His Trust (1910)
His Trust Fulfilled (1910)
Swords and Hearts (1911)
The Battle (1911)
• A lengthy booklet with writing about the film, rare archival imagery, and more.

They've got a really exceptional lineup for October & November:

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

After a pretty (imo) underwhelming 2012, 2013 has turned out pretty great for MoC.

They even beat Criterion to the punch with that World Cinema Foundation set (though I'll still probably end up waiting for Criterion just so I don't have to import.) I love the fact that the project is finally coming to fruition - big kudos to Scorsese for helping drive the project and to Eureka for being willing to release them, even though they're largely unknown even to most film lovers.

Also, I'm glad I held off on any of those Mizoguchi upgrades.

That's what caught my eye. I've been hearing about Criterion doing the WCF films for years, and now MOC beats them to the punch...

Red River! The entire slate looks phenomenal, but I'm especially excited about one of my favorite Westerns finally making its way to Blu-ray.

They also tweeted this about the WCF titles:

So it sounds like we won't have to wait too long to see the rest of the restored titles.

I kind of have a hard time seeing Criterion keeping up that sort of pace - they always seem to prefer to draw things out as long as possible (see: their Chaplin releases.)

Embarrassing confession: I love westerns and I love Hawks, but I've never seen Red River.

Say, where did I see this guy?
In Red River?
Or a Place in the Sun?
Maybe the Misfits?
Or From Here to Eternity?

That's...Montgomery Clift, honey!

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

Yeah, so I've pre-ordered the Eureka Nosferatu edition, because I read that the Kino release will have no new supplemental features - they're all ported over from previous releases. The Eureka version will have all new special features.
